CITY ITEMS. One Hundred Years Ago. Nothing could better illustrate the progress made in the mechanic arts within the past century than a cotnpa risen of certain modern household utensils with the style or those articles a hundred yearn ago. Passing the Move warerooms of Dlr. Janice Spear, No. MO ?docket street, yesterday, we saw a largo lot of old iron unload ing from the wagon of a Delaware-county farmer, whirls we had the curiosity to examine. Among the various pieces we observed a curiosity, which, as a relic of the olden time, is well worth a visit of inspection. In ap pearance it resembled the front section of a caution, MIDI a massive stove-pipe inserted in its side, the weight olpt being very heavy. On it is cast the following inseri p. Ilion, in the style of the lettering on the old State House gc li. W. Stiegel-1763." This quaint old piece of iron, upon inquiry, we found to have once formed the upper portion of a store, for many years employed in a church in Delaware county, thofarmerreferred to having brought it, and other old scraps of metal, together with 'what change he could command, to Philadelphia, for the pnrpose of purchasing therewith ono of Mr. Spear's celebrated new Anti-Dust Cooking Stoves, the one, by the way, which we 60111 c few weeks ago took. OCCaSiOn to recommend to the public as 44 The Latest and Greatest." Improvement of the age. Tho fame already attained by these wonderful stoves is ginprecedehted. The natter - 144,g comments which we then Imade upon their ineritshave not only been justified by ex periment, but even greater excellence is accorded to them by those who have theni in use. A letter front a LtdY, (and the testimony of the ladies in a matter of this kind le always of most value ' ) shown to lit by Mr. Spear. Las the following ellCOlnillnig respecting the stove in question. The letter is dated 44 Chester Valley, Sept. fifttli," and is from a member of one of the most respectable and best-known families in Chester comity : «I assure you it [the Cooking Stove with Mr. Spear's great • Anti-Dust • improvement, purchased at his store ghost a month beforod is the moat eampletely-arrao g ed stove I have ever seen. I regard its use as one of the comforts of housekeeping. Yon know 1 hesitated about taking the Anti-Dust Stove on account of the situation of the oven, it being beneath tie lire. But taking your word that it would Mke well, I took it on your recom mendation, and I have had no occasion to regret it; on the contrary. I would not be deprived of its use for twice its cost ' This is one of many simihw letters which Kr. Spear is daily receiving from all parts of the country, whilst bore in the city his great Anti-Dust Cooking Stove is rapidly taking the place of alt others in use. Another person—a lady residing some fifteen miles away from the city—writes to Mr. Spear as follows, in ordering oue of them for a nowly-married daughter: "I make Iny stove hat, then heat the oven in fifteen itniuntes, and bake th.we ovens full without touching the fire. 1 assure you, you are perfectly safe in giving to warranty on such a stove as this. As you hare dealt 130 honorably with me, I thought a line due you, although to me a stranger." In our former notice of this admirable Anti-Past Cooking ~tone, we had only space to speak of its general merits. xithont particularizing. We fluty here state that one of its peculiarities is, it sifts its own ashes. fly its use not the smallest particle of coal can go to *waste. The coal which is withdrawn with The ashes, in the ordinary stove, is in this moat ingeniculsly retained, and the separation of the ashes from the coal, and placing both in two separate pans, er drawers, 15 00 micely affected that it admits of no escape of dust, and entirely dispenses with the use of a shovel. The drainers containing the ashes and the sifted coal can either of them be removed independent of each other. We have in this ,tove, not only the meat conrenient tcoolcing arraligaleut in tiAtt, and a sreat.leconornt:CT of Sue?, but, moreover, a stove which performs better in stalking, roastine, stewing,, boiling, frying, and cooking generally, than :my other stove that has yet been in vented in Europe or America. Persons wishing to buy, ito matter vlk.-re they may reside, will make a great lois :sire in not - first examining Mr. Spear's stoves. SERMON RY REV. Dit..
