A Sunday School Missionary Meeting. M aid of the missionary work of the.. Amerioan Sunday-Sohool Union, yes held at conoert Hall on Monday evening. George H. Stuart. Esc.. In the chair. We may state that the first object - of the Soolety is " to plant Sunday schools wherever there is a destitute population," and the sorand it "to prepare and, circu late moral and religious publications." The monthly reports of minionarleg for the year 1860, a l lo w s the following aggregate of work done : New sohools organized directly by missionaries where none.premoutily exietert... . 2,091 Teachers pledging themselves to con - duet those 5ch0015..._... • - ...- .... 14,225 Children enrolled at the time of organization- 81,278 schools visited and aided by the missionaries.... 2 701 Teaohers laboring in these schools.— ..... SONS Scholars in atten0tan0e.................. ..... The chairman. after stating the objects of the meet ing. staid that he regretted that it should have occurred on an evening in the week upon which there were many of our churches open for worship, which, he said, was doubtless the cane of the comparative small attendance, the hall having been lee than two-thirds lull. -.....218,416 . .218,08 The exereises of the evening were oommenoel hi inging the hymn oommeneing " All hail the power of Telma' name ! Let angels prostrate fall." Prayer was then cared by the Rev. Mr. Chidtaw, winch wee followed by another hymn and an ADDRESS My MR. J. M. RICE, OF KANSAS. The amain{ animater' wan asked, he said, Can Sun day aohools be sueoessfully planted in the West t This he proceeded to answer by narrating his own wipe& enos in Kansas. He said that two-thirds of the children which he had gatherea into the schools sines he had Leen engaged in this work in that region had never be fore attended Sunday &heels at all. He was gratified to say there were many in the West who were waling to engage In the Sunday-sohool work. The difficulties attending this labor of love were often spoken of here in the East; but he thought if our teaohers were to witness the far greater difficulties in the far West they would look at their labors in the Fast through different glasses. The poverty of the Wash and inability to oduoate children, he conceived was s groat argument In favor of this missionary work; and in alt his travels he had yet to find the first instance where, in any populated locality, the establishment of a Sun_ day sohool was not praotioable. With regard to the permanency of these schools, when established, he said that out of forty inaugurated, within a certain distriet, all had continued brosperously, with the exception of two. He next proceeded to consider the question whether these schools are resulting in out substantial good and demonstrated the affirmative of this by narrating game ogees In which the formation of these wheels had been the opening door to the introduotion of religious influences; others, in which they hid contributed in building up cold and feeble churches, and fostering the emit of revival. In short. they were the great dissem inators of religious knowledge. Within the last two years, ho had, in Kansas, organized forty Sunday sehows. all, with five exceptions, in places where pre viously there had been no religious organizations. Out side of the cities of Leavenworth and Atchison, the sroportlon of sohoo's in the Territory mere ninety three onion schools, to seven denominational ones. With regard to the informs and aotual starvation in Kansas at the present time, he said it was hardly newts eary for him to say, anything beyond what was reported le our newspapers So far as he had seen these state ments they wore within. rather than outside the truth, He called attention to the fact in this connection, ae somewhat explanatory of this state of things, that a large proportion of emigrants to Kamm are people who, before going there, had to straggle for a livelihood. One half of the population of the town of Leaven - worth were young men from the East, and the future of that country must to a great extent depend upon the character and lives of those young men. Tine, as a re• presentative foot, was a powerful argument in favor of affording them the hest educational and relighwurad vantages. Atter singing another hymn there was an ADDREPS BY REV. 0, W. OHILDAW, OF HMO. Mr. !Stewart introduced this spanker as an old veteran n the newts. He came forward greeted with app'ause. Ile thought thle wee a very great day, in view of the united prayers of Christians throughout the world that were then ascending in behalf ot our inful race. Twenty years ago when be went to Ohio to commence his labors as a missionary in this work, it was the far West. Shine then much had been done, but there was yet meet land to be possessed. He held that the Ame rican Sanday-School Union hail yet an important mis sion to perform in the work of home evangelization• As a general thing, he found the work more difficult to proescute now in the neglected regions of that country, than when the population was new and lees uumerone. lie gave some striking instances in confirmation of this. Some of his adventures in establishing new schools were invested with an almost romantic interest, and were stamped with a degree of real matter-of-fact ex perience, that in:heated Mr. Childlaw as pro-eminently a man for his work. Some people might think this a homely and perhaps ineffectual means of doing good. Some mire ago, he Raid, ho was on a steamboat going down the Ohfo, when a mail fell overboard. The boat was stopped by order of the cap tain, who was standing on the hut rieanee deck " Let down the yawl," he tined to the men; when some ono Parsed down to the almost exhausted man a filthy, un sightly haroh•eever, which wee eagerly grasped, and the man's life was saved, whieli It would probably not have been by waiting for the yawl. Now, what the un sightly hatoh-cover was to the drowning man. the Sun day school was to the mum in the nowly-settled sec tiona of our country. It was the beet means that could be employed for preparing the way for the preaching of the Gospel by a regular ministry in due course of tiles. He felt that the Church was sadly derelict of duty in prosecuting this work, and so because Christians did not properly appreciate the feet that clesidrin need sal vation, and that tufty can be saved by bringing them to the Gospel in such away that they can understand and receive it. At the °Mee of tine address there was a collection taken up, and, after singing doxology, the audience were dismissed with a heuediOtlOA. Rzv. " WHO on Wnst , is JENKINS ?"—We have been asked this question by a correspondent, and we will re ply that Jenktne is a newspaper writer who desoribes balls, fashionable weddings, &0., and who goes largely into gossiping detail, He would say, for Instance, " Mrs. B. looked exceeding well in a magnificent lilac silk dress, with Brussels lace trimmings ; while Mr. B, looked superbly In an elegant dross suit which lie hail prooured for the ocoasion at the Brown Stone Clothing Hall of Hooktull d Wilson, Nos. ISM and bed Chestnut street, above Sixth. We may remark, en passont, that the most splendid stook of garments for gentlemen and youths is kept constantly on hand at this deservedly Popular establishment." This specimen of Jenkins's style will satisfy our readers that he can sometimes tell the sober truth.
