OtRTIFIDATY, OF A. A. ItAYES, fff. D.O OF

It is well known that the medicinal effeots of Protoxide
of Iron are lost by even!' very_brief exposure to air, and
that to maintain a volution of Protoxide of Iron, without
fu they oxidation, has been deemed nopessible.
In the PERU SYRUP this desirable point is

JULLLE'S PATENT
WR".UOIIT AND CHILLED IRON FIRE AND
BURULAR,PROOF !SAFE. AND COMBINA
TION BANE LOCKS, VAULT DOORS, &o.
The time has arrived when Bankere, lifernhanta, and
business men begin to feel not only thp importanos but
the neoeesity of having a thoroughly fire and burglar
proottlate.
That the ehoet-iron or common safe has been muoh
improved an a fire-proot since its first introduotion, and
that it will preserve the written matter, under favora
able aircumetanoes. in admitted; but that it still has sc
rim defects moat be conceded. lie liability to be
crushed by the fall of walla, timbers. .to., or by Its' own
fall I Its inability.to,prevent, the constant evaporation of
tne moisture from the filling, an it le so.rcptp possibie to
make or keep the vapor chamber water-tight in en frail
a annotate ;Also, its entire inability to retain the steam
or vapor during the heel; ite rapid deteriora;ion by runt
and otherwise. and its entire insecurity against burgla
ry, will hardly be denied. It is claimed that all mesa defects are remedied in the above wrought and chilled
iron cafe and look. and the °bloat of thin article is. not
only to show this fact, but the why and the 'wherefore.
'An do this uuderetandingly, a abort erynomns of the
structure will be fire* preeented• of this as wail as of the
elipet-iron safe, premleing that the two principles born
prise all the popular safes now in use .Furtheri that
the vapor principle is thel only •line now reied upon
to make the eate lire-proof. by alt safe-makers having
any celebrity, eoneenuentiv, all now put in a oomposi
tion-nhamber for tine ohjeot.
STRUCTURE OF CHILLED-IRON SAFES DE-
The base or boar of thie safe is a box made of tars m
wrought iron,la' to 3: of en inch thick, by )1: to 21.:
inches wide crossing each other at right mutes, and
Placed near each other, forming a compact network ;
about Minch holes are drilled near each other through
these bare, andpeounter sunk ; east iron is run between
these bare and into the holes, and over the outer, stir
face, making the whole thioknoss tY: to 2 inches of mild
iron, Without joints; the wrought-iron berg thor, ighly
chilling the cast iron, and making it drill proof, while
the two irons are so strongly tied so not to be separated
or broken by an ordinaw Powei.
BTRUCTURY, OF
... I:ETz, RON SAFES DE-
SCRIBED.
The shoat - iron cafe is sande of sheet-iron plates, from
one sixteenth to one twelfth of en inch thick, banded
round the outer edge with light bar iron, the larger safes
having ii band aortae the centre. This oonstitutes the
wholeiron work, adding the door fiances and book plate
and the door-way or front flanges; except in some Oases
a thin plate of hardened steel is pieced inside, and this
is called a burglar-proof cafe
As has been mentioned, each of the above Safes have
composition chambere, or, mote practically. vapor
chambers, as vapor is found aboslutsly neoessary to act
upon the mon flanges that surround the composition
chamber, or the heat would be easily conducted through
those flanges to the interior. though the composition
be avers° good a non-conductor. as iron is a free con
ductor of heat, and vapor is the only preventive. It
must be admitted that the best material for this cham
ber is that which is the greatest absorbent. and will not
cake or become hard. Lime may be conceded to be
that article, as most of the Safe makers uses compo
sition having lime for a constituent, and this is the only
reliance for the production of vapor; but as lime is
