SCRIBED.
The shoat - iron cafe is sande of sheet-iron plates, from
one sixteenth to one twelfth of en inch thick, banded
round the outer edge with light bar iron, the larger safes
having ii band aortae the centre. This oonstitutes the
wholeiron work, adding the door fiances and book plate
and the door-way or front flanges; except in some Oases
a thin plate of hardened steel is pieced inside, and this
is called a burglar-proof cafe
As has been mentioned, each of the above Safes have
composition chambere, or, mote practically. vapor
chambers, as vapor is found aboslutsly neoessary to act
upon the mon flanges that surround the composition
chamber, or the heat would be easily conducted through
those flanges to the interior. though the composition
be avers° good a non-conductor. as iron is a free con
ductor of heat, and vapor is the only preventive. It
must be admitted that the best material for this cham
ber is that which is the greatest absorbent. and will not
cake or become hard. Lime may be conceded to be
that article, as most of the Safe makers uses compo
sition having lime for a constituent, and this is the only
reliance for the production of vapor; but as lime is
light, it Borne heavy et-iron safe adulterated with fire
clay. or

The Chilled Iron Safe has both in the outer structure,
consequently the °bomber is filled with thine unadultel a
tad, producing much more vapor than the composition
used by sheet-iron makers. end white the sheet-iron
Safe is warping and twisting at every joint. when heat
ed allowing the Vapor to escape, the chilled iron has no
outer joints, and the thickness of iron prevents the
springing ot the joints, consequently the vapor on unot
escape. And here lies the great advantage this safe
hostas a fire proof) over the sheet iron, but it has other
important advanDiges. The structure shows that it
cannot be affected by the falling of yells, tiniters,
or its own fall; that there is no chance for deterioration
from rust or otherwise pthat in case of fire its share is
not elenteu ; that if it is checked by water, or other
+muse, the cheek can only reach to the wrought iron
ham consequently the Safe is not Injured fur nee that
the steam or vapor is nimbly kept in the vapor cham
ber, and does not destroy the bindings to books, or so
injure the paver as to require copying, thereby saving
this trouble. na well tie the expense or a new Fare.
As tO Burglary, the structure shows this safe to be
drill' proof ad over the rntime,. and with Lillie's vele
brated Dank Look atiaohed, which is dritheledge, and
powder proof. it will be seen that it is thoroughly bur
glar proo f whsle the structure of the ohm non Safe
shows tthat tho crowbar, axe, cold-chisel, or drill can
dpenetrate it in a few moments, without much noise or
isturbance.
