On one occasion, an oldrealclent of. the neighborhood was aauulted because he declared that the pole was a‘nuisance, : and on another threats were made to ride upon a railnfe&tleaan living near by, beoause he had spoken Bouthern sentiments freely in Ooooquan. Thisraised much feeling in the neighborhood, and at a meeting at Brentsville,' some time about last court, it was agreed that the flag was an insnlt to the people of Vlrginie,'and incendiary in theob jeet it ifM raised to promote, and should be torn down on Friday, the 27th day of July. Intelligence of this determination soon roaohod Ooooquan, and on Monday night a Republican meet ing was held there to devise measures for the defence of the hag pole; On the following morning Mr J. C. Athey visited Washingtons and sent to Go yernor,Letcher the despatoh which was published yesterdays. Whilst in Washington Athey made, arrangements with certain Republicans to furnish forty orflfty fire-arms of approved make, with ammunition therefor, which were to be sent to Oo* ooquan on Tuaeday night by wagon. The despatoh from. Governor: Letcher, however, induoea the abandonment of. this plan. . On the morning of tbe 27th (yesterday) the Re publicans hoisted the American flag and the party ensign hearing the names of Lincoln and Hamlin. At half past three ‘ o'clock the Prince William Cavalry, Capt. • Thornton commanding, - entered the village, and ranged themselves in the neigh borhood ot the pole. They were followed oy a company of about forty strong, under com mand of .Captain FHshugh and Major Carter, who, paying no atttention whatever to the hortetntfi, quietly formed in a hollow square around the pole, feeing inwards. Whilst this eompany'wai surrounding the pole, Mr. Joseph T. Janney advanced to the captain of the troop of horse and claimed protection for his property, upon which the pole stood. ’ At tbe word of command, James W, Jackson, of Fairfax, a. stalwart, yeoman, sprang forward and gave the first blow.* Others followed, re doubling stroke on stroke. During the time there was no, interruption, save the Republicans and others-wko Stood'at corners near by would ory out, *< Ainf your axe' dull ? Hope you're having a good tiine.'Ao In a fow minutes, however, there was aery of “Stand from under ! n and the pole eame to the ground, r ° 5 , : Distantly the crowd, gaye-three cheers, when the Republicans responded by “ Three cheers for Hamlin.'' , All were quickly at work on the fallen pole, and In less time than it takes to tell it was chopped up. end the pleoee carried off. Tho flag was sent to Brentsville. . / So soon 1 ae; thefisg pole was levelled, Captain Fltehugh ordered*,“about face," and his company marched off, saluted as they went by mingled jeers and applause. - ' During the evening there was some excitement, and a personal rencontre took Place between Colo nelßrawner and. Joseph T. Janney, inwbioh tho letter wasconsiderably injured. Tho crowd cleared away daring the evening, and at sundown all was quiet. • • The Republicans say they will put up another pole on tbe same site. A report reached here to-night, through parties who .were at Ooooquan yesterday, that the greatest exoitement prevailed at that place when they left; that several Republicans had been attacked, and same fights resulted. One statement is that Hr. Janney, a Bell and Bverett man—an old settler in Virginia, a large property holder, and the owner of the land-where the liberty pole wes erected— was brutally assailed and beaten because he as serted that he bad tbo right to declare his own principles upon his own homestead, and to permit others to. exercise. their rights within hfs own grounds if it pleased him to do so. y lafMiif Tonh>ll|kt Proces»lou. Many good boys and girls feel that they oannot behave to suit themselves in the presence of company. They are awkward, clownish, rough. They feel timid,\bashful, self-distrustful, the moment they are addressed by a stranger, or appear in company. There is but one way .to get over this feeling, and aoquire easy and graceful manners, and that is, to do the best thev can all the t>me,athome as well as abroad. We must be Cour teous, agreeable, civile kind* gentlemanly, and manly a home, and then it will become a second nature every where. The most agreeable-persons we have eyer .known in oompany were those who were most agreea ble at home, and purchased their clothing at the “ One Prloe Gift Clothing Emporium” of Granville. Mags Meetings, Conventions, &u.— Political gatherings are the order of the day, and politicians are aa busy as bees in getting up Conventions, Serenades, Platforms, Ao., and in serving the oountry generally. We hear of an enthusiastic party which preposes to hold a Mass Convention. Their platform will be simply aa follows: “ We hold it to be the duty of every man to love .his oountry, respect its laws, scorn sbabbiness of conduct or apparel; and. to this end, to procure all his garments at the Hrown Stone Clothing Hall of Kookhill It Wilson, Woe. toSand 609 Chestnut sheet, above Sixth, Philadelphia.” Ladies, Read This !—Dust sod moths in carpets are effectually eradicated by the Patent Carpet-beat ing Machine, 120 J Noble street.
