Asa general role, he who sits dosen,to write what he thinks. will" please the public a great , deal better than one who has to think what he shall write, For sub. jeets, to be done justice to, should be turned over in a man's mind, before be dips his pen in the ink. The Ink, when not in use, should- be excluded from the, air, and there can be no exerts° for net keeping it ,eicluded; seeing that the Modern Inkstands generally, arefltted up With a simple apparatui which effectually does it, bY a turn' of the hand—which writers are too lazy or careless to make. The result is, the air gets to the liquid, which evaporates until it gradu ally becomeS a dark mud or compost, with which it is almost impossible to write. Arti des committed to paper with such art apology for ink 7 . -whichlndeed is ink with'the life dried ;out of it—are of the mud, muddy. NO,wonder that it is very hard to read such ;compesitions, and, oh I how. exceedingly difficult -it must tobeen, even' to Thickhead or Wronghead, to write them . For our owm part, we rinse our - inkstand regularly We . Use Arnold's Chemi cal Writing Fluid, flowing freely and not ear :roding a steel pen, which we obtain from Liss .Brothers, South Fourth street, (Quit last bottle which they sent us is nearly used,up,) and we use American pens, of the a counting-house " genus, 'which we find bear our lipid and heavy ,writing. With good pens,' limpid ink, fine 'paper, a fiat desk, an easy chair, slippers yet easier ? and a good conscience, one almost finds a leading article; almost insensibly writing itself on the paper., If, in the hurry of cans: position, with Christopher orinter's vice Peter, of happy memory, gone into, the ice business) waiting with a .thee which actu ally looks--" The foreman sent me for copy, we 'omit a word or write two or three not as intelligibly as might be desired,- Mr. Ward,. who "reads" overy.line of the paper era it meets the public eye, and whose busi ness is to find out all mistakes, will, certainly correct whatever slips us, or the compositors may have made, and put Wall right. Such 'is the advantege to a •newspaper writer to. have an intelligent "reader" to . Ward off -all blunders'comteltted by haste or carelessness. AU this time while we have peen gossiping about pen and ink, we have wandered frOn the fact that, at this present writing, we .want a subject. We' have written about the Italian qUestion and its intricacies until we rtially , aro tired of it, and certainly cannot touch upon that until it obtain some new phase.. The annexation of Savoy 'and Nice to the French emidrehas also been pretty well used up itt these columns. About the Reform Bill, and Lord John, Rus sell's non-desire.. to carry it, and I"almer ston's toryism, and Gladstone's longwinded ness, and Bright's extra liberality settling down into playing second fiddle to Lord John, who at once fears, hitters, and despises him as "a mere cotton -spinner," we have said enough. There is that young Prince of Wales coming over to see Brother Jonathan in a couple of months, but we cannot speak about that visit until we know a little more about time, conditions, and circumstances thereof. Or, rooming nearer honie, there is the re port that by way of retaliation for our cap ture et the Marin ExpOltion, a seizure of three million dollars has been .mtide by the Mexican clergy—but the details are scareely exact enough for U 8 to write easily upon . them, and if there be one thing more than' another which we dislike, it is a guesswork article upon an important public question. If the dominant or any other party in Mexico has injured or insulted any American citizens, it is as certain as fate that redress will be de-'. mended and obtained.- To be' sure, the', Charleston Convention looms in the diatance,l and promises to supply abundance of mate.; rials for any number of f' leaders," but we--, that is the particular We who pen These lines! —make a point of not writing upon Ameri-. 1 can politics, the discussion of which can be lunch better attended to by the senior' editor; who, most anomalously, is considerably the: younger man. We dare say that he will take` good care of them, and speak out his mind; as he always does. There is the great dual° between Pryor and Potter—but that, which did not take place, is already a faded subject. Its' freshness and bloom vanished three days ago. Here, at our own door, are subjects enough; ono may say. Not so. At this moment, polio tics in this city resemble Aaron's rod, which swallowed up all the rods of the Egyptian mai &Jane. Between the two: coming Convex= tions, at Charleston and Chicago, and the sail . tatibn for the pity elections; Philadelphia is in 'astate'of confusion worse confounded, about which; whoever else may write, we have the smallest persthaal care: . The only thing which strikes uses positively new is that that celebrated artiste, Mrs. John C. Heenan; late Miss Adah Isaacs Menken,;:' She championelect, has appeared at the - Na tional Theatre; in' two pieces and' ton' parts. How is' she ever to be put together again? This great "artiste" has had her picture in one of the illustrated papers, and, we had an idei, was actually on the Atlantic, en route to her husband, who; by this time, has either beaten gc Professor" sayers, is himself 'a beaten pe that, or has not fought. " There is a 'subjeet, it is true, upon which vie shall venture—here Christopher awake l s from a deep eleep into which, tired of waiting, he had fallen, and dreamily utters the words 6, Got copy for the office r, What is the *tie of telling that long-legged Mercury of ours that we really could not find'a subject upon which to write? The nominations of' the Republicans in the seve , ral Congressional districts of this State for dele . gates to the Repablicem ,Convention see now corn, pieta. The Massachusetts delegation will go to Chicago entirely Uninstructed; and many of t he delegates'uncommitted, for or againsi,,eny date for the Peesidency whose 'esthete likely Wiwi presented to the Convention. From acanaries.. aminntion of the lint we Amid judge that-the personal preferences of about one-half of the dele gates would be for Governor Banks, the fret choice of the remainder being Seward. It isnot u nlikoly, however, that the latter will _receive the votes of a majority of the delegation so long as there is a prospect of his nomination. The feeling among the delegates with whom we have eonvereed is emphatically in favor of nominating thoee candi dates for President and Vise President who, upon a full competition of views at Chicago, shall hold out the strongest swarm:mat of success. .• • Massachusetts. is sure ,for the nominee of the Chicago Convention; whoever he may be. And we may say the same of Maine, New Hampshire, :Per mont,New York. , and the Northwestern States.. We can hardly class Rhode Island and Connectient as uncertain, though it would be well to consider whet would make' the &at run in. those States. New Jersey, Pennsylvania. Indiana,. - and Illinois may be considered as doubtful States -= that le to 'say, there must be a careful adaptation of the midi , dates to the popular syrupathice, to insure succeas. While the. delegates from these States should not expect to dictate - absolutely_ who shall be the can didates, mesh deference should bo paid to their views, to. which the Convention should eenfetm, if consistent with the true interests of the party. Be far as, we can form an opinion, this ie thesentiment of the majority-4:111e Massachusetts delegation, and wawa happy to add that we know, of no dele gate who has strong prejudices against any candi date whose name is likely to be presented, or who would not acquiesce in the fairly expressed choice of the Convention. The Great Prize Fight. UOW RATERS tuompomp'ru7Y7Q—llB coNn- Mr. Wilkes, in a letter dated London, /throb 20, to Wilkes' Spirirof the Tones, writes: The training wilt& -Sayer; undergoes has, as ho told me in his letter, do mystery in it, and he merely takes the usual means of a man who wishes to keep himself in good health by proper food and active exercise. He rises about six,e'clook in,the morning, and after a cold bath takesa brisk !mai mile walk, and then comes home to breakfast; which he _takes at S o'clock. A nicely-broiled ataxic or chop, with bread and butter, boiled or peached eggs, forms the foundation for his morning exorable; and after lounging about for a while he . sets out for a walk of some brave er fourteen miles. This brings him up to dinar, , after which; when an other period: of report bee intervened, h.:Oakes another walk of abonCeight.miles. Sometimes be makes the walks longer, and sometimes tam, jest ita he may happen to .feel Inclined, mad resisting absolutely, any fixed routine. He does no sparring, no fighting at the bag, though be oetesionally prac tises with the dumb bells. Most all of his exercise, however, fella the shape of pedeetria4sm, and his friend Fuller, though one of the best pedeatriansin England, cannot share rod for rod of hiswalka with him. To are Fuller's words, he sends Sayers round about •while he cuts across: and in that way_ he makes himself his companion at paints and in stalments of the journey': Re does not require &ay-trainer at all, as do tither pngiliata com panion is all that is itteeeessury to him, and he fro ,quently dispansee with him altogether by setting oat- alone. - He requires no watching, and he needs no mentor, foe his pride is :hie guar dian. and in the .way„ of knowledge 'and ex perionee he Is at the heid - liis profession. The only' other portion of his - training is en occasional game of feet-ball, quoits, or some casual outdoor pastime that strikes-his tansy , while in the evening be is very fetid of drop ping in at the White Hart, and indulging in a game of billiards. This ' mode of repara tion is, therefore, widely at variance with the usual strict routine which is imposed- on the unfortunate neophytes who fall into the hands of technical trainers, and we believe he is all the better for keeping In good health in a natural manner. His weight at the present time Is 149 pounds, anti he will fight only two or three pounds heavier. Those two or three pounds will be pot on hirr. the last two or three days, so that he will feel li - jocund sad expanding condition. Mean not look better, and in - eonfidente he is complete.
