The frarridia of the picture 'is beantifnlly poetic; sad 'the Manner of its execution fully Accords with 'th'e elevated suggestiveneu of thedesign. ' It is in the of of a. warm August day— when the grass is ripely luxuriant ' ln color, and' the foliage Is rich, and the titmoaphere heavy with a warm fragrance. Alt, things on , earth, in air, indicate a twilight and: an evening of balm and blessedness; and create a mast appropriate feel ing, under the influence_ of wide. to , oonteinplate the. group under the verandah or Washiugton'i Home. The 'shadows, like a protecting hand, plain stretched over it, adding 11 placid ease' and gra vity of tone : they lengthen slowly dyer the lawn, while upon the middle' pound, and the Potoniao with its gallylreightedharges and busy crafts, in the distance, the:sunlight:playa with- a. gorgeous wealth and breadth of life. In this effect, ; not'e attention'to the generalities, as the details of the locality, are quickly recognisable by all who have done themselves the honor, of Pil grimage to the hallowed spot. The sunlight is evidently a combination of studies from nature; and it ii marvellously rich without being ruinous to the picture. It is not beamy—bnt universal; and is a suitable background against_ which ,to place the evening of Washington's life, • : Under the verandah, and close, to the windows of the House, are Mrs. Washington and her dangh ter-in-law;Mrs. Stuart. Thelatter, about twenty eight years of age, and dressed in the rich and picturesque costume of the period, is reading a note. Mrs. Washington is sewing, and on the little table is a basket, with her knitting. Lean ing upon her lap is Eleanor Parke Castle, the daughter of Mrs. Stuart by a former marriage; and on the lawn, in the shadow, little George Washington Parke Castle, with the assistance of a negro girl, who is blowing the match, is about to fire a small cannon—the while two sporting dogs, not unused to the smell, of gunpowder, are at , treated to that anxious and earnest watchfulness +characteristic of the canine spates. In the centre of the picture, and near the edge of the verandah, are the chief figures—Washington and his guest. They have just arisen from sitting, the chairs in dicating that they have been entertaining the ladies. • They, however, have got to discussing some subject then glinting the public mind. It was brought up, no doubt, by the news paper which Lafayette holds in his band, be hind hie back, as be, leaning against the pillar, attentivel7 and deferentially listens to the opinion Washington is giving. The figure and expression of the two is finely eharacteristio. The Washington, is fall of force, elevation, and gran deur, Vtitheut any stilted effort to make him more than he siould "seem Lafayette, white a symbol of that ease of manner his education Ind his coun try would confer, feels the greatness of the pre. lona before him. Ho is' young and ardent ; still the same feelings which prompted him to come to America and fight for liberty, control him, even in , this home scene, to a warmth of deference which conveys a fine idea of his dignity of manner. The whole calls up so many genial 'and loving fancies, and overspreads with so a home ' , baling and joyful's respect, that it would take many an , essay to ,convey them. mar an hour with such a ' work is worth a bushel full of spread-eagle speeches. I am asked daily by these who take an interest in municipalpolitica whether it is true that I shall ;not be a candidate for the Mayoralty before' the' City Convention, but will, either avowedly or by; 'tacit acquiescence, be a candidate foV the office of, • ;City Solicitor. Unimportant as the matter ma 7 be ;to the public, the currency of such rumors entitles ; my friends to a precise knowledge of my position; can convey it to all of them only by a publica : tion through the press. • Many months ago I was asked it I would consent • to be a candidate for the Mayoralty. Public and party considerations were stated as. prompting the application. No word or actof mine invited it; the office was not one that I aspired to. After my as sent to the use of my name, publicity was given to it in the usual modes,.of which I shall affect no disapproval ; for I think the early and open pre sentation of the names of men willing to he candi dates for office is the proper, indeed the only way of getting the sense of the people upon Them, before the nomination. But to be publicly announced as' a candidate for the Mayoralty, and 'then privily to secure the City Solicitorship would be an indi rect proceeding, that would subject ) howeVer un justly, all concerned in it to suspicions of bargain and intrigue,' that would, discredit me, and, the ticket upon which my name appeared. I protect myself, my friends, and the Democratic party from such imputations, by saying now, decidedly and finally, that will not accept a nomination for City Solicitor, at the present time. I am also told, by many reliable' informants, that a belief exists that, under certain cireum4 stances of competition for the nomination to the Mayoralty, I will retract my 'consent to the use of my name for it, and -retire from the Can- UM. , Several years sine I was very well acquainted with Martin Scott, the famous marksman. Ho was not, as some may think; a fabulous character. Ho was a captain, in the army, and w man of noble qualities ; • he was killed at the battle of Molino del ney. Of him the storY.nins that, as soon as he ap peared in the field, the coon cried out, "If that is Martin Scott don't fire ; I will come daunt." Now, I have the greatest respect for all, the Worthy gentlemen who aro spoken of as present or prospective candidates for, the nomination. Some or all of them may be political Martin Scotts, but there is no one of them upon whose mere ap petrel:me in the field I willimmediately "come down." For nomination to the Mayoralty I shall remain at the service of the Democratic party tin the Con vention does its office. I shall not disparage any other man's claims; and if they prevail, no one will recognise them more cheerfully than March 8 17, 3860. , Cuss. J. Brent.g. FOPSIQN Goons.—The principal interest during the week has been concentrated in the auction room, where some of our largest buyers have given attendance throughout the whole of several days. Prices have fluctuated more than usual, but there has been increased discrimination in favor of desi rable merchandise, and the greatest sacrifice has been in fabrics not appropriate to the season, , nor adapted to the market. The stock on sale appears to be large, and yet, notwithstanding the resent additions, contains very few choice goods. Such as it is, however, it will have to be sold, as import ers are determined to go out of the season with clean lofts. We are not sure that those who have been holding off in hope of buying to better advdn• tage later in the season, will make anything by such delay. It is very likely that some jobs may go of below current rates, but selections will be less desirable, and we believe the preaent is'as fa vorable a period for such pun:besee as will be found this season. It is very diffloult to sell oven 'stan dard goods at private sate, as there seems to be a charm about the auction room which few are able to resist —N. Y.
