ROVRIIRNTS OP CORTINA UP TUN RIP RR. Thelireiriewittelifrik;hf!the 29tb; emu; up the °roots alma our lost as foltowa : - 4 ‘ On• Wednesday, the 21st inst., our entire regu lar end ranger, forte moved up the river in pur suit of , Cortina, whO i with his whole guerilla band, it was reported, had left for Rio Grande Oity. On . Gm' day following, lhuraday, tho 224, Colonel S.A. Leckridge, with several friends, started out to ovor take, ourlittle allay, and tender ,their Bev/lees' in • .any-capacity irtithich they might be needed. - "Cn Mondity, , the 24th, a courier arrived with chapati:hes from General Twiggs for Major Herd, zelMani but finding the -Major hadleft, he started the saws evening up the river. lie stated that the desPitchos were of great importance, and in addi tion, said ten companies of United States troops had been ordered to rendezvous at San Antonio prepa ratory td Marching for this plane. On the morning of that day, one of the rangers, John Thorp, from Gonzales, wounded accidentally after the conflict on the •I,4th, died at • the rangers' hospital in this place; The wounded arm was twice amputated ; but he could not be saved. On Thursday evening, the 27th, John Graham, Esq.; late sheriff of Nimes county, returned from Edinburg, which place our forces left on Sunday, 'the 20th. ,'Cat. Ford started about 10 e'clook A. M:, followed by MOM. Ileintzelinan at neon, Capt. Tobin, with rear guard, an hour or two ;later. When , Gottina was at Edinburg, he numbered three hundred and fifty men, as counted by several tsr ties. ills force was there divided into three parts; the advance, under his immediate command, was three days ahead of our troops ; the second tife days, 'and his rear about twenty hours. It Is stated that despatches reached Edinburg that Cortina was within ten-miles of Rio Grande City on Saturday, the 24th; the merchants of which place, as well as Roma, had passed their goods over the river, pre forring Mexican protection to American 'security. Mr. Graham is of the opinion that Rio Grande City must have been reached and taken by the bandits on Christmas, quite likely followed by the fall of Roma the next day. This, however, is a matter of opinion • yet, there are abundant reasons forgrave apprehension. The complete demolition of these heavy commercial towns is probable, as not an American rancho near the river has escaped the incendiary torch. "Mr. Graham further states that each night, on the way to Edinburg, scoutinglparties of the ene my were hovering about the camps, as evidenced by their fires, found in the morning. Grim being scarce along the river ) and no corn to be bad, the horses were weakening rapidly, and-the daily matches, 50 a consequence, were beloming ma terially shorter.. - ""At Edinburg, Cortina entered the store of J. N. Treviiio & Bro., and helped himself to two or three hundred dollars in goods. "On Thursday wo heard that Mr. 'White, think ing the lower country clear, ;started for his rancho, up the river, but he had not gone more than rwelve, or fifteen miles when he was attacked by eight Mexicans, two of whom ho reports to have killed. lie brought, as evidence of what he says, two bul let-holes—one in his saddle, the other in his over- coat, besides bloody knife and hands, and one horse. Net having conversed with Mr. White, we know not what credeuee to plea in the tale of his hair-breadth camp and truly marvellous deeds." CAPTURE OF RIO GRANDE CITY ROBBICRY OF TILE TOWN AND FIEVERAL AIIBRICANS XILLUD. In a subsequent issue the Flag adds the follow- 4 :ll : esterday our worst fears wore confirmed by authentic information from Camair, of the taking of lulu Grande City, on the 24th inst., by Cortina, at the head of four hundred and twenty-livo men. Every effort possible was made to got up a force to meet him but without avail, there being, at the time, but thirty-six armed men, who unanimously decided not to fight twelve times their own num ber. Whereupon several Americans ' with their families, loft for the Mexican aide of the river. On the 25th, Cortina sent a force clown to Ring gold Barracks, where they found and killed Mr. Robertson, Mr. Box, and Captain Spears, all of whom are highly esteemed on the Rio Grande for their sterling qualities ; besides these, two others, whom names are unknown to ue, were also killed. The robberies of tho 25th aro said to have been done in a gentlemanly manner, but that toward evening of that day, the soldiers were getting drunk, and it was feared and believed that not only would the town be completely sacked, but that the American families would bo ruth lessly murdered. Cortina is reported to have declared his inten tion to take Roma, thence march directly to La redo, and effect a crossing of the river. We commend to the consideration of the Secre tary of War the taking of Rio Grande city, for " prompt action." L &TEST FROM BROWNSVILLE. (Special Correspondence of the Ficasunct Pour iBABEL, Jan. 1. The papers I send you contain a full summary of what has transpired at the scat of war up to date. To-day I am informed from an official entree, at Brownsville, that Capt. Ricketts and Mr. C. Howard, the contractor for the Rangers, aro anxious to procure transportation for supplies, but as yet have not stmooeded. The steamers do not fool safe on the river between this and Rio Grande Ci Thty. e troops must be in a needy condition, as there is nothing of the bread kind in the country above. Forage for horses is equally scarce, and groceries there are none whatever. I think that, until the troops can be supplied with subsistence stores, and forage for their horses, they will not pursue the enemy. The horses of the Rangers are not in good plight at present. Besides, the further up you go the poorer the pasturhe, espeoially on the river border. I am informed that 'a largo number of horses and a quantity ofarms worecapturod by our forces. Both of the pieces that were taken in the first at tack on Cortina, " lost by our side," were retaken by Ford and the Rangers. My letters state that Capt. Stoneman, of the regular cavalry, arrived in time to take a part, anti did good execution, as a party of the enemy attempted to cross the river. My opinion now is, that Cortina will attempt to make his wayto ono or the other of the contend ing factions in Mexico, and should that appear to him too remote, gather together a formidable band of Indians and return to this vicinity again for vengeance, There are numerous hands of marauding In diana about Laredo, who would be proud of such a leader as Cortina, and ho Is just the man to join such a crowd, well knowing that be could avenge himself for this last reverse with that material, better than with his own countrymen, as they will be very cautious bow they lot the American regu lars and rangers overtake them again, I think, Weekly Review of the Philadelphia Markets. ruILADMPRIA January 13,1810.
