We learn from the Charleston Mercury that, on Thursday last, two $5O bills of the State Bank, in Charleston, were presented at the counter of that .Institution, by separate parties, for payment. The bills were from the genuine plate of this bank, but the signatures of the cashier B. M. Lee, and of the" president, I dward Sebring, wore a most misera ble forgery, which was detected at the first glance of the teller. The officers of the bank at once in vestigated matters, to see how many of those bills might have been fraudulently before the public, when it was discovered that from a package of two hundred and fifty sheets—four bills to a sheet— awaiting the proper signatures to give them our. yeney, four sheets, or sixteen bills; wore abstracted. It is not yet known bow the bills were taken from the bank. The parties who presented the bills which led to the detection of the fraud state that they took them from 'legroom in regular trade. ' The editor of the Knoxville Register has been shown a counterfeit $5 note on the Union Bank of Seuth'thirolina. It Is well executed. There is a 'figure 5 In bah upper corners, with the word five printed across the lower part of the figure. In the centre of the note the letter V is formed by five portraits, with an'. eagle and two spears crossed in his talons, and a small 5 oath side of the V. There is a 'female figure in the lower right-hand _corner, with scales in the right hand and a spear in the left hand.. A' tree or shrub Is in the lower left corner. The whole bill has a reddish cast, and is dated Ist January, 1859.
