" Letter frost .Stitakt £ I’etk/iSox. —In tbe Press, of the Bth of Novembor, there i* an artiole under City Items in which James Spear is spoken of as being the original'inventor of.a perforated oroas-pieoe for Gas-Burning Cooking Stoves ; also, that Judge Dunlap, by his decision of (he 29th day ofAugust, J 859, decided priority of invention to said perforated chamber to James Spear. These statements are' liable to, load the imblioaatray.and to entangle them in a law-suit.; We therefore present the faotsas they really exist* and st the same time oaution all persons from making* buy ins. or using Hollow Centres as we are the entire owners of aaid patent. On the 6th day of February. 1549* a patent was granted to J.. 8, Chollar for Hollow Centres, and which letters patent we purchased for a sum of money, and on tlie Slat day of May,1869, the said letters-patent .were TO-iasued to us. The daemon of Judge Damap •was not on the above patent, but on an application of interference between R. W. Belson and James Spear, whereby Judge Dunlap decides as follows: J assume that Belson first.disooverea it, and verged.*™! ap plied it-practically in btk own tatohen.in Philadclphitt, in the fMI of the year J653-Be!son being the first of the two in' point‘Of time; and though Spear first applied to the office and secured the patent, he cannot oust Belson or defeat hie application.” As far as the decision of Judge Donlap goes it would make the Perforated Hot low Cross-piece common property, and destroys the usefulness of the patent granted to James Spear ; but thd patent of J.'B.Choltarwna taken out nine years pre vious to the , application of either Spear or Belson, and remains ia full force and virtue, .... • , * STUABT & PETERSON. Popular Course op Lectures.— The Young .Men’s Christian Association of Germantown'have or ganized a Course of Lectures, for the benefit of their organization, which bids fair to constitute one of tho chief attractions of that delightful suburban and time honored settlement.. The introductory leoturo of the course will bo delivered on Monday evening of next week, November Htfyby Morton MoMiohael*Esq.,of the HtrtK American.. He will be followed on the suc cessive Monday evenings of November 21st. 28 h, De cember fith, 32th, and 19th, by Bev. A. Allen, E M., Presi dent of Girard College, and Rev. J. Wheaton Smith, in the order heie named. We understand that a largo number of tickets for the Course have already been sold, of which there will probably be enough disposed of to fill the Town Hall, in which they are to be hold, be fore the' first lecture is given. As there are eminent pames on the list which our readers in Germantown would not like to miss hearing, it will be desirable for .them to secure their tickets early. Feojt tub Daily-News, Nov. 9.—A cotempo rary, referring to the movement in reference to savings bauks in Massachusetts, says: . ‘•■We observe that there is quite a discussion in the Boston journals with regard to the securities required for savings banks’.loans. An important subject, truly, whonitisremeraberod that many industrious hut poor families have invited all their little store of .cash in these institutions. The question at issue is, whether the deposits in savings banks should bo loaned out on commercial paper;.and the general sentiment appears to be in favor of lond&g on mortgages and other equally substantial'investments, and none other. The, Daily Advertiser contends that such was plainly the principle ou whicli the present savings-bank system was estab- lished, since it contemplates and allows Aha investment of the deposits in mortgage* upon real estates, thus, apparently, proposing no greater share of .investments easily convertible and frequently chanced, than should be required a* against the sudden withdrawal of deposits.” lii connection with the above, wo may remark that there is ftt least one institution (and there may be oth ers) m this oity, which is prohibited by its charter from loaning on or discounting promissory notes, bills of ex change, or other negotiable paper j and as the beat com mentary on the wisdom of suoh restriction, the institu tion continued to pay.
