As we shall return to the book, in a few days, we merely elltflowledrl its receipt in this passing netloe. i "Biographies of Distinguished t3oleptifie Men," by Francois Arago, the great French Astronomer, have boon published by Ticknor d. Fields,of Boston. in two volumes. , These consist ofEnglish transla tions of M. Arago's Autobiography, and a selection of the best of his memoirs of eminent solentille men, Continental and British. The Autobiogra phy comes down to Imp. Tho other *moire are those of Daftly, Mayor of -.Paris during the great Revolution; Sir William Herschel, the astronomer; Laplace, authorof the Illitonique Cita le ; Joseph Fourier, the groat mathematiolan—(these make the first series)—"-Carnot, the. great military engi neer; Mains, "the great physicist; Dr. Thomas Young, first interpreter of Egyptian Hiero glyphics; and James Watt, inventor of the Steam engine. These biographies are valuable additions - to the History of Science. - Ticknor & Fields have also published "The Life and Remains of Douglas Jerrold," by his _son, Blowhard Jerrold. This, though a very one• sided view of-the satirist's life and character; and somewhat spun out with extracts from his "punch" and other articles, is a readable and ,pleasant volume. As might be expooted, Jerrold -ps giVes a most favorable view of Jerrold pire. Ile 'JO carefully suppresses all mention of every thing tending to lower Kim to the level of ordinary mortals, that the reader must be impressed with the idea that Jerrold, like a wed boy, never on• tared Evans's . in his life, only took an ocoasional glass of wine, and went to bed at ton o'clock every evening. 'Mr. Blanchard Jerrold is dissatisfied with some elucidations of his father's "way of life," which appeared in this journal some months ago. They were not such couleur de rose desorip• Sons as he has himself given in this biography— but they were correct, as we shall show. They presented Douglas Jerrold as seen by the world, while his son, naturally enough, takes a digerent point of view. Our most serious sin, It seems, (as duly noticed in the angry Preface,) is that we said that Black Eyed 'Susan was written before Jerrold was twenty-one, the fact being that he t"was in his twenty-sixth year when ho prodwed this drama." Some of the London oritios,we notice, 'pronounce this biography not called for, and not worth reading. We give a contrary opinion, and pronounce it a readable book, though exhibiting Jerrold, all through, in a holiday suit. Still, every allowande mushe made for a biography executed by filial duty and regard. We say—buy the book and read it. The incidental information about contemporor7 literati is full of interest, and go• nerally accurate. Dolisser k Procter, of New York, whose noose hold Library, to consist of twelve volumes, at half a dollar each, commenced with Miohelet's " Life and Martyrdom of Joan of Arai" have added a •' Life of Burns," containing the biography, from the -new edition of the " 13noyelopodle Ilritannt. ca,"' and also Oarlyle's oelebrated review of Lock. hart's Life of Burns. There is also, very appro. priately, a memoir of Carlyle himself. This book is well•timed, and wilt be popular. Another vol ume Is the " Life, Teaohings, and Death of Socra tes,"' from (}rote's history of green, with a brief pOtiOe of Mr. Grote himself. To take biographies, wholesale, from larger and more expensive works, may not be "quite correct," nor does it require 'any editorship whatever, but it certainly makes aide little books, supplying much information. The . gropers have lately produced some very good. novels. We have already noticed "What will he do with It ?" Bilwer's last and best. We now have "Dpbsodes of Frond' history," by Miss Pardee, in which the charm of romance and the actuality of fact are happily blended by one of the freshest and moat artistic female writers of the age. Then there is "Sylvan bolt's Daughter, " " 4 , Holum Leo , the history in a woman's life, of a wonian's gentle yet lofty .mind : a book to read more than once. Lastly, by Mrs. Margaret Oli phant, author of, "Margaret Maitland," and ." Zaidee," ,and "The Athelinge," a Sottish story called "The Laird of Norlau."
