The ra pidity with which it shot up, the second time, was wonderful—in three minutes the balloon WAS thren.miles up in the air. It Was Moen, through a glasti, for two hours: This ascent was made on Thursday, the 16th instant, about eleven o'clock:A.. M. On the following Monday, five days later,,news reached Adrian that' the balloon had come down near Baptiste Creek, Lake Erie,•on the Canada side.: The balloon had fallen upon a marshy meadow, .was found with its mouth open, and had been-torn in two places by the hrtombies of ,a tree. , A great deal of, gas re miained in it when found. - There Wawa belief, at firgt,'ithat. His only remain ing chance would be to cling to' the smooth material of which the balloon was made, and he could not have sustained himself in that 'manner. When this occurred we can only conjecture, but that it must have been within an bOur after be started seems highly proba ble." There seems no probability that THURSTON escaped.. The Detroit newspapers, which supply us with copious details which we have here condensed, further relate that, in August, 1856, Mr. TIMOTHY WINCHESTER, who ascended from Norwalk, Ohio, and was also borne in the direction of Lake Brie; had never again been heard of. His balloon, like that in which THURSTON ascended, was made by Mr. BAN NISTER. The St. Louis Democrat also records a balloon adventure. Mr. BROOKS, an aero naut, ascended 'at Centralia, near St. Louis, on the 17th instant, making a safe descent, at six-. teen miles distance, on the farm of Mr. Han- VEY. Two small children—a girl aged eight, and a boy of three—belonging to Mr. RARITY, were placed in the balloon by himself, the object being fc to give them a.ride," by pul ling, up and down, the rope to which it was attached. The rope was accidentally cut, and the balloon went up- with the children. To add to the horror of such a flight, it was then nearly seven in the evening, with darkness rapidly gathering around. Tho agony of the parents and the apprehension of all may be faintly imagined. At three o'clock, the next morning, eighteen miles from the place of ascent, Mr. IGNATIUS ATCHISON, who bad got up to see the comet, was astonished, if not alarmed, by seeing a colossal object in a tree about twenty yards from his house. He retired, waked up his family, and on re-ap proaching the tree heard a weak and piteous voice call to him, "Come here and let us down, we are almost frozen." The journalist adds : "Mr. ATCHISON speedily perceived the astonishing nature of the case, mustered help, cut away several limbs of the tree, and drew the car in safety to the ground 1 The little boy was first lifted out, and when placed upon his feet instantly ran for several yards, then turned, and for a moment contemplated the balloon with apparently intense curiosity. The little girl told their sorrows and adventures, with an almost broken heart, to these people, who, strangely indeed, had not heard of the disaster." That same afternoon, Mr. MAavar learned that his children were safe. A few hours later he clasped them in his arms. Next day, the intelligence was announced in the churches of Centralia, and on Monday, the 20th, the children made a jubilant entry into Centralia, where, of course, they were objects of much interest. They had been thirteen hours and a half in the balloon, and probably from 7 to at night, in the air. The little girl's sim ple story is that as the balloon ascended she cried piteously to her father to pull it down. She said they passed over a town where she saw a great many people, to whom she like wise appealed at the top of her voice. This place was Centralia. The balloon was seen to pass over there, but the people little ima gined• that it carried two persons in such danger. Her little brother cried with cold, and the heroic girl took off her apron, covered him, and got him to sleep. -While handling the ropes, she happened to pull ono that, bad the effect of bringing the balloon down, and, although not understanding the philosophy of the movement, she was quite content to keep the valve open, so long as by so doing she found she neared the earth. It is astonishing that such fool-hardy ex ploits as balloon-ascents have not more fre quently been unfortunate. Eastern people are quick •as lightning. (Nutoker'n lighinin!" is one of their favorite phrasied though, in Some respeets,. their progressiv . ene ss needs to be modified; and when I toll you ti at one of their representative men said to mee other day that "if your old State House were; in Boston, it would be torn down quicker 'n light ran'," you wiltbetter appireoiate the noble efforts of one of their most gifted cone in rescuing the tomb of Washington from the further' deseeration_ of private ownership. Still, I love the fire of the New England character, , kindled by the mere highly `oxygenated atmosphere they breathe, and only wish ate nobler, sparks did but soot. generally find a lodgment in, and permeate 'with its .. pic, methean Warmth, all' sections of this and otAter lands. I have not time to notice the scores of improve menthe recently made in and around Boston, and many others of the most substantial character that aro now in progress. This noticeable differ ence obtains between Boston and our own city, that in the former capitalist., whose means were rendered stagnant for 'the want of prolitalille channels for circulation, are now, in numerous in stances, employing their funds in erecting build ings, which will not only procure them' a safe in vestment, but add substantially to the wealth and splendor of their metropolis. The business pros tration, however, induced by the oriels of '67, has not yet been overcome, in Boston, as I leartied from her beat-advised authorities that her mer chants, taken as a whole, had, np to this point of the present season, done fully a third less than their usual trade. In New York situ greater disproportion Leh without doubt, been.experieneed. Indeed, lam informed that In the lower part of the city vary many large storehouses are but partially 000ttplid, and quite a number entirely untenanted. The fact is, New York looks flat, and disguise it as they may, her merchants are morose and long faced over the prospects of heavy rents and light trade. There are some few exeeptienal houses which boast of a more flattering experience; but their making a point of it only proves the rile; and the houses that deserve to be placed in this fortunate category might be easily named. The great house of Alexander T. Stewart do Co., which is no less a national celebrity than a New York wonder, is at this time giving a practical il lustration of this recuperative vigor in a high de gree. Next to the orownleas, olockless, Olt? Hill, the most conspicuous feature of change here's the irnmnse addition Messrs. Stewart .1 Co. are making to their already mammoth establishment. This extension has bean so far completed aS to have enabled its proprietors to stook it for opera tions the first of this week. The extent of the ad dition, in figures, is one hundred feet on Reade street, and seventy.seven feet on Chambers street, making, upon the whole, a vast marble structure, with a front of one hundred and seventy-live feet on Broadway, running book two hundred feet, and having five stories above ground and two beneath, all ponderously freighted with the various fabrics belonging to the several departments of the dry goods trade, from common domestic, to fifteen hundred-dollar shawls. Happening in at Brady's this morning, I was just in time to meet a distinguished , sitter for an addition to that splendid gallery of portraits of pnblio men. The personal appeafance of the sitter atm& me as bearing a marked resemblance to our worthy Executive, Governor Packer, and on learning that the new celebrity was none other than the 3110106 of the late Syracuse Convention for Governor of New York, Mr. Amass J. Parker,' the similarity between both the nun and their names occurred to me as quite remarkable. But I will not burden your columns with a long letter. Home to -night. GRAYBEARD.
