as it may have for hoisting the heavy machinery on
board.
- For the acconitoodation of the entire steam machinery
and the feel, there will be allowed in the body of the
dap the entire space. under the berth deck, corn
mewing at 'twenty feet abaft the mainmast. and
thence extending forward %distance of 56 feet. Within
this space It is expected to carry
,coal for 11 days' full
steaming, the daily consniny,tion of which the bidder
will state in his specificatione ; And the weight of the
machinery, water In boilers, shaft, propeller, and ap.
pendeges, with the tools and spare weak, must not ex.

, - The distance from the aft-side of the mainmast to the
aft-side of the forivard stern-post, will be about 95 feet,
and the distance between the forward and the after stern
post will he 7 feet ; - the depth NOD the load water line

Stearn-engine manufacturers who desire to bid coo oh
tato a copy of the section of the vessel upon making op
pliention to the department.
The proposals muot be accompanied by full specifica
tions and general drawings, having the pooltion of the
centre of gravity of the machinery, boilers, ace., marked
on them ; giving also the capacity of the steam cylin
ders and area of foot and delivery valves, and of air
pump, and outboard delivering valves, space for Amon
above the water line in boilers, the fire and grate sur
face ; also the diameter, pitch, surface and kind of pro
pellor, And other principal points, that ' comparisons can
readily be made. There will also be given the estimate of
the weight of engine, boilers, water, bunkers, appenda
ges, tools, and spare work, in tens of 8,210 ponods.
The terms of payment will be that when one-fourth
of the materials And labor provided for in the con
tract shall have been completed to the satisfaction
of the department, there will be made a payment of one
fifth partof the whole amount of the centred; when
one-half the work shall In like manner be completed,
there willbo a further payment of one-fifth; when three.
fourths the work shalt home been completed a further
payment of one-fifth; when the whole 4411 have been
completed, and hove made a satiefactory trial of one
week, then a farther payment of one-fifth; and when
the ship shalt have performed satisfactorily at sea for a
period of three menthe, then the remaining NM shall
be paid.
The repairs necessary during this period from defec
tive workmanship or materials will be at the expense of
the contractor.
The proposals mast be explicit, and no qualified or
"conditional offer w ll be considered.
