Hoyt, the nominee for chief magistrate, is a descendent of one of the old families who were among the early settlers of the Wyom ing valley. He was bom in Luzerne county in 1830, and remained upon his father's farm until 1844, when he en tered the Wyoming Seminary, then first opened by the Rev. Dr. Neelson Here he prepared for Williams Col lege, and graduated in 1849. In 1850 he opened a select school at Towando, which he conducted for a year, and wns then elected professor of mathematics In the Wyoming Seminary, which po sition he filled for two years. Subse 5541 6012 6479 5479 4996 6481 5000 4997 5981 quently he became a student at law in the office of Hon. George W. Wood ward, at Wilkesbarre. In 1853 he went to Memphis, where he taught the graded school until recalled to Pennsylvania by the death of his father. He then entered the oflice of Hon. w. J. Woodward, where he re 6479 mained until the election of Woodward to the bench. After the Fremont campaign in 185G, in which he took an active part, ho opened an oflice in Wilkesbarre, and begun the practice of law. During the year next following his admission to the bar, General Hoyt secured a large and lucrative practice, and devoted himself to its demands assiduously, until the break ing out of the war. In the summer of i861 he was active in raising the Fifty-second regiment Pennsylva nia Volunteers, and in consideration of his services was commissioned as lieutenant colonel by Governor Curtin. His regiment was in the brig age of General Negley, and partici pated in the Peuinsula campaign of 1802. Early in the winter of 1863 the brigade, then under the command of W. W. H. Davis, Was sent to the de- partment of the South, to co-operate in the naval attack on Fort Sumpter. It participated, under General Gil more, in thesiegeoperationsjpnducted on Morris Island against lort Wagner and Fort Sumpter. In the summer of 1804 a night attack was organized by Gen. Foster against Fort Johnson, in Charleston harbor. It was made in boats across the harbor. The Are boats, commanded by Gen. Hoyt and the other officers of his regiment, suc ceeded in reaching, surprising and en tering the fort, but the reinforcements not arriving they found themselves in the hands of the enemy, prisoners of war. After being confined at Ma. con, he was brought back with six hundred other officers to Charleston jail, where they were supposed to bo under fire from Morris Island. While en route from Macon to Charleston, Gen. Hoyt, with four other officers, es caped from the cars. After several days and nights f fruitless efforts for liberty, were recaptured by the ene my, with the aid of blood hounds, and placed in the Charleston jail- Upon being exchanged he rejoined his regi ment and remained with it until the close of the war. At the expiration of his term of service he returned to Wilkesbarre, where he resumed the practice of his profession. During the year 1867, uuder appointment from Gov Geary, he discharged the duties of additional law judge of his judicial district with an ability and faithful ness which commended him to the bar and people of Luzerne. For six years he was a member of the school board of Wilkesbarre. During these years the board reorganized the schools, constructed large and commo dious buildings, and made the public schools second to none in the State. In 1875 he became the Chairman of the Republican Committee and conducted the campaign of that and the following year with success. These campaigns indicated the zeal, ability and ieauer - ship of General Hoyt. As a lawyer lie' stands in the front rank. He Is truly a man learned in the law. He is probably one of the best read men in Pennsylvania, and his library con tains the best books in all the depart-1 menta or literature.
