THURSDAY, .1UNB 4, '.874.
The Congressional Committee appoin
ted to investigate tho condition of the
sufferers by the flood in tho Mississippi
Valley have conoludcd their examina
tion. They report that there are 40,.
000 in Louisiana, 10,000 in Arkansas,
10,000 in Mississippi, and that supplies
will bo necessary until August or Sep
tember, when the corn citn bo harvested.
The amount that has been appropriated
will bo exhausted by Juuo 10. Id or
dor to aflord relief to the people, it is
proposed to make an appropriation by
Congress of $2,000,000 to rebuild tho
broken levees and furnish labor to the
people whose crops have been destroyed.
The Constitutional Commission
Tho Harrieburg Patriot, Democratic,
says:
"If there was any justification for the
plea that the proposal to appoint a com
mission to revise the new Constitution
was conceived in a spirit of hostility to
that document, the feeling ought to be
removed by the announcement of the
names of the distinguished citizens who
have been scclected by tho Governor
for the work of revision. Of tho four
Republican members of tho commission,
Chief Justico Agnew, Attorney General
Dimmick, and the cx-Attorncy General
B.. II IJrewster, voted lor the new Jon
stitution. Concerning tho position of
Judgo II. AV. Williams, the fourth Re
publican member of the Hoard, we are
not iufcrmcd. Senator Wallace voted
for the new Constitution, though op
posed to the judiciary clause and some
other portions of the work. So also did
Senator Playford. Mr. McClintock, or
Wilkesbarre, the other Democratic mem
ber of tho Doard, voted against the Con
stitution, we believe, but took no active
part in tho discussion of tho question,
lie is one of the most distinguished
lawyers of northern Pennsylvania and
will bring to the discbarge of the duties
imposed on him a ripe legal experience.
The commission cannot, therefore, bo
justly accused of entertaining any hos
tility to the work which they are called
upon to revise None of the members
were in the convention except Attorney
General Dimmick, who resigned his seat
soon after its first meeting to enter upon
tho duties of his present position.
There will thus be, ou the other hand,
i no undue partiality in the commission
for tho constitution ou the score of pa
ternity. Nono of them had any share
in raising tho commission. Mr. Wallace
and Mr. Playford both voted agaiust
the bill when it was before the Senate.
The members, then, are removed from
all partisan or personal considerations in
tho performanee of this work."
GENERAL NOTES.
A New York pickpocket relieved a
passenger on one of its street railway
cars, of some f 5,200, a few days ago.
According to tho latest statement of
the Uritish Registrar General, London
has a population of 3,255,200.
Ohio had fewer marriages bv nearly
8,000 in 1873 than 180(5, although the
population has largely increased.
The druggists in Cincinnati aro try
ing to profit by tho temperance crusade,
by advancing the price of soda water.
Over twenty acres of young tobacco
plauts have been set out in Los Angelos,
Cal. It is believed that a large area of'
the valley is adapted to its culture.
A whale 40 feet long, and 9 feet
through, was killed a few days ago,
some two miles from South Amboy. It
had got aground, hence its capture.
The Hon. f. B. Mollish, M. C, from
New York, who died in tho Govern
ment Insano Hospital at Washington,
on Saturday iast, was a printer in his
earlier days.
Kurlington, N. J., celebrated the
anniversary of the adoption ot the XYth
amendment to tho Constitution, last
Thursday Military, music, speaking,
parades, etc., were among tho features
of the day.
- Tho crop reports from all parts of the
country, except the inundated region of
Louisiana, aro exceedingly favorable.
There will undoubtedly de a large grain
yiold, and the cotton prospects i r j in
every way promising. If wo thould
have a larje grain yield, it will do
n uoh toward reviving activity in trade in
tie fall. -
A Mrs Oliver of Dubuquo a few days
ago gave birth to a "humming bird" ot
a baby, girl, weight only one and" one
half pounds. Yet it is vigorous and
takes its proper food with as much evi
dent relish as young infants usually do.
It is but seven inches long, and a finger
ring worn by one of the visitors, who
called to pay their respects to the little
stranger, passed over its hand and
would answer for a bracelet.
The next inauguration day, March 4,
1877, falls on Sunday, so that tho pre
siding officer of the Senate pro tern, will
be President of the United States from
Sunday midnight till Monday ut the
hour that the President elect is sworn
in This has occurred twice before,
Modioo beginning his seoond term Mon
day, March 5th, 1821, and Zachary
Taylor his term ou Monday. March 5,
1849. J
But few persons aro aware, says the
Scientific American, of the magnitude
and perfection to which the manufao
. ture of doors and window blinds by
machinery has arrived iu the United
States. It is stated by those who pro
fess to know, that the number of doors
alone made within the one State of New
York, exceeds 80,000 per day, or not
far from nine millions per year. From
statistics deemed reliable, it is believed
that the amount of capital invested in
this branch of manufactures in this
country cannot fall short of 810,000,

Ayer's Cathartic Pills,
For tho relief and
euro of all dorango
merits in tho stom
ach, liver, aud bow
els. They are a mild
aperient, and au
excellent purgative,
lleing purely vege
table, they contain
no mercury or mine
ral whatever. Much
serious sickness and
suffering is prevent
ed bv their timely
nsc; and cverr lamily should have them on hand
for their protection and relief, when reuuired.
Long experience has proved them to bo the saf
est, surest, and best of aU the Fills with which
no marKcc auounus. Jty incir occasional use,
tlio blood Is puriiled, the corruptions of tho sys
tem expelled, obstructions removed, and the
wholo machinery of life restored to its healthy
activity. Internal organs which become clogged
and sluggish are cleansed by Ayer's fills, aud
stimulated into action. Thus incipient diseaso
is changed into health, the value of which change,
when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enoy
it, can hardly bo computed. Their sugar coating
makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their
virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so
that they are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable.
AlOiough searching, they aro mild, aud operate
without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or
occupation.
Full directions are ctv'n on the wrapper to
each box, how to use them as a Family l'hysic,
and for tho following complaints, wluch theso
I'llls rapidly cure:
For lByNMii or Indigestion, X.lntleiui
nPMM, JLang-uor and JLomm of Amvtite, they
thould be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach, and restore its healthy tone and action.

Ut no, juhuiiicv or urrrn nicuiirH,
luu Colic and Ililioua Jt' '!, tliey should
bo iudiciouslv taken for eacli caso, to correct tho
diseased action or remove the obstructions which
c.iuso it.
For HyMontery or Jlnrrliuea, but" one
jnild dose is generally required.
For ItheiiiiiutiMii. Cout, Ciravel,
i illation ut the Ileurt, luin in the
ililf, llck and I.olii, they should be contin
uously taken, as required, to change the diseased
action of the system. With such change those
complaints disappear.
For ItroiMy and Iroi,lcal piling,
they should be taken in large and frequent doses
to produce the effect of a drastic purge.
For SniirrHion, a large dose should be
taken, as it produces the deoued effect by sym
pathy. Aa a IHnner fill, take one or two Villi to
promoto digstion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels, restores tho appetite, and invigorates the
system. Hence it is often advantageous where
no serious derangement exists. One who feels
tolerably well, often linds that a dose of these
1'illM makes him feel decidedly better, from their
cloansii g and renovating effect on the digestive
apparatus.
