Tin Short Days. The shortest afternoon,
or one of the twelve shortest was that of Wed
nesday, December 2. The sun then set at 4:28,
and the almnnic records it at precisely that
econ J for the succeeding twelve days, or until
the 14th of December, when the afternoons
begin to lengthen. But the mornings will be
'JA minutes shorter, the sun riving December
10 at 7:(X,on the 31st of December at 7:30 and
continue to rise at that time till January 8
The shortest day, from suorist to sunset, occurs
December 21.
A Dull Dat in tiii Housk. The proceed'
ings of the House to-day were extremely dull,
fchenckand Washburne seemed to belaboring
under the effects of reaction, which naturally
followed the violent excitement and pa is ion
into which they worked themselves yesterday
over the President's Message. Bingham's lem
per was in no wise improved by the signal de
feat which be sustained yesterday. The House
had another opportunity of laughing at hie
cxhition of spleen in a short recontre he had
with Scofield of Pennsylvania. A discussion
arose upon the refercnee of private claim.
Bingham wanted it sent to the Court of Claims,
while Scofield favored its reference to the Com
mittee on Claims. Scofield is somewhat of ft
wag and seemed to enjoy Bingham's uncon
trollable passion and loss of temper over so
small matter. Whatever little influence
Bingham may have posessed in the House
heretofore he is fait losing. He was as clearly
beaten to-:'.ay as on yesterday notwithstanding
the earnestness with which he defended his
ease. A'. Y. Herald.
Wbt is This Tuts! Wherefore so many
bald men and so few bald women t Why is it
that skulls of young men in their twenties
shine like billiard balls t Why this spectacle
of bald beaded barbers rubbing the dry tops of
bald headed men, recommending invigorations
warranted to produce bushy locks In less than
ft fortnight, while baldheaded spectators and
middle aged men with wigs look on with deri
eive smiles; though all the while their wives
ftnd daughters throng our streets covered with
crown of beauty j and charming actresses
toss their blond tresses in luxurious profusion
on the stages of our theatres. Our male pop
ulation will no doubt take ft serene satisfaction
in saying that it is because men have more to
worry them than women ; and have the trouble
of coutriving not only how to support them
selves, but abio hew to support their wives and
daughters. ' Probably, however, that is not
the reason. Women of course have Cner and
longer hair than men, but men lestroy their
hair by making ovens ot their beads, under
their hats; and thus heat the tops of their era
rtjums until ths hair dies out tor the very want
of ir. Men should take off thslr hats
ofiener or ventilate them better,
Ths ArraoACH or tiii Holidays. The holi
day season will soon be here, and its approach
isheraledby the appearanoe of all manner of
beautiful things In the shop windows, from
costly chronometers and tea-sets ana handsome
dress patterns down to endless varieties of
toys and sweetmeats. The ohldrea are almost
wild with delightful anticipations at they look
on the mountains of good things that meet their
admiring gate, and the mines of beautiful toys
that seem to be only waiting for the beneficent
hands of Santa Ctaut todisbutseto the eager
eolplentsof his bounty. "Christmas Is com
ing is written on the bright eager faces ftnd
sparkling eyes of the joyous little ones, and
they engage In many ft brown study ftnd pro
found reverie concerning what manner of
presents will fall to Metrlotin the "good time"
so ne.ir at hand.
The season of gift making is of rare enjoy
ment both to the giver and receiver, ftnd where
the occasion is judiciously used maybef last
ing benefit to both.
We hope in the coning Christ mar those
whose means wil. permit them, will not forgot
to be generous to the po Jr. whose enjoyment of
the festive season is necessarly ourtailed by the
harsh unloving hand of . poverty. Judicious
presents made to these will repay, in solid en
joyment and permanent usefulness, more than
compound interest to the giver.
Dimorrst's Niw Yrar's Numb sr. We only
echo the universal opinion, when we say that
this Magasine improves with every year, if not
with every successive number. Other Maga
zines preserve the same tone, the same features,
,he same style, (never rising above the dead
level,) which they have for years past; Demo
rest's is progressive, always fresh and full of
interest, and instructive information, A new
feature for this year is the " Ladie's Club,"
wh'ch seems already to have a long list of mem
bers. The fashions and patterns are sensible
and practical as usual. $3 yearly. Send 15
