On Saturday last si -negroes, two of
them women, were attempting to cross
the Savannah 1 fiver, near Savanrah, in
a small boat when the boat upset, and
three men and one of the women were
drowned. Their frantic cries while strug
gling in the water brought to the shore
two or three hundred persons of their own
color from neighboring plantations, who
mingled their wild shouts with those of
the drowning persons. One colored man
swam out to the capsized boat, and with
great risk seized two ot the six- and
placed them on the boat, and after ascer
taining that the ether four had disappear
ed, swain with the boat and tiie rescued
negroes to shore.
