- JUSTICE TO WIIOII JUSTIRE IS DUR.—The
Copperhead organs howl terribly about . the
legislation obtained to put , down lawlessness
in this County. This of coarse, is Very natu
rat on the part of those who are the apolo
gists of crime, and we don't object to being
'abused a little from that quarter, (we should
dread their favor), but we do not think they
compliment the great ability of their mem
bers, when they state that, notwithstanding
all their tremendous exertions, they were
- beaten by a "crazy" person. We merely al
lude to this subject to bestow a portion of the
credit of obtaining the new criminal court, to
whom it properly belongs.' When we ar
rived at Harrisburg the last time,' we found
all our plans deranged, and the bill in a po
sition where it was not likely , to be reached
this session. We made an effort to remove it
from that position, bat failed, when sevemi
persons froth Schuylkill County, amo ng
whom were Messrs. Nice and Deweea, who,
in zonnection with the Copperhead members
bad the thing "setup" as it Is termed, sup
- posing that we were going to present a hill
ibr Schuylkill County alone, which we had
abandoned two weeks before, and. the - new
bill which we had prepared we were not
quite crazy enough to show. to those whom
we knew would. bitterly oppose it. On the
Fame day that we failed, they called up - the
bill knowing that we intended sabstituting
another bill, but not the bill they aupPosed,
and of course did not object to its substitu
tion, but when the reading commenced and
they found that the district was Composed of
Dauphin, Lebanon and Schuylkill, there was
a rich scene in Om House. At least a dozen
members sprang to their feet at once and bel
lowed at the top of their voices that this was
a most tremendous fraud upon the Legisla

formed; declared it was not a snake, but
great "sarpint." The opposite side of. the.

is 62,175 11 tons; by Canal, 25,819 10; for

The trade continues &ill. At many of "the
collieries the men are standing out for higher
wages. The truth is that wages for laborers
particularly are too low at the collieries, and
they can scarcely live at present prices of
provisions, but it is well known that the

We have just learned that the collieries are

THE 'MANUFACTURERS AND COAL
• CONSUMERS OF ,PRILADELEU.A.
The amount of 'coal rientlroni ttie Schuylkill Regions

this amount only 41.871 tons were exported. • In addl.

But every day brings something new, and . Saturday
brought us a public trial, at Ts, eutleth and. Coates

trial wee the vacant ground- east of the -Peahen fiery.
A tartrate trial had been made th day previous at a Et
burban tavern, called the Punch Bowl, where a largo

pertinent. The flames, thotigh they roared like a fur
nace, were 'extinguished -as easily as the dames of a
penny dip.
The apparatus Is a cylinder of sheet iron *enduring a
40 lbs pressure to the stluare hide. Ir is made of va•
none saes, with a faucet, near the haulm. This la
slang over the operator's .buck, A short hue is at

Tarn on the faucet and from the cylinder jos out a
volume of carbonie acid gas that Instantly-extinguish

and set on fire. When the whole was' wrapped in
flames the jet of gas was turned upon the pile, and In

been built, about ten by twelve feet square and thirteen
feet high.. It wee filled with combustibles and eaters,

on his back, advanced to the structure when the whole

a whir. from the nozzle the flames were extinguished.
