We merely al lude to this subject to bestow a portion of the credit of obtaining the new criminal court, to whom it properly belongs.' When we ar rived at Harrisburg the last time,' we found all our plans deranged, and the bill in a po sition where it was not likely , to be reached this session. We made an effort to remove it from that position, bat failed, when sevemi persons froth Schuylkill County, amo ng whom were Messrs. Nice and Deweea, who, in zonnection with the Copperhead members bad the thing "setup" as it Is termed, sup - posing that we were going to present a hill ibr Schuylkill County alone, which we had abandoned two weeks before, and. the - new bill which we had prepared we were not quite crazy enough to show. to those whom we knew would. bitterly oppose it. On the Fame day that we failed, they called up - the bill knowing that we intended sabstituting another bill, but not the bill they aupPosed, and of course did not object to its substitu tion, but when the reading commenced and they found that the district was Composed of Dauphin, Lebanon and Schuylkill, there was a rich scene in Om House. At least a dozen members sprang to their feet at once and bel lowed at the top of their voices that this was a most tremendous fraud upon the Legisla ture, and our friend Mr. Breen, we were in formed; declared it was not a snake, but great "sarpint." These men have now no interests in Schuylkill County as as we can learn,.bat are _middle men, whose intereit it always has heen heretofore; -tore. duce the price of . coal., almost to stariation. prices, in order to put the largeit share of profits in their own pockets. And *hen 'we see a coo Exchange, purporting to be organ tied to advance the interests of tbe coal trade, soliciting the trade here to members, and used for such a purpose, we cannot un derstaed bow our operators can consistently continue membera of the Same. Judging from its recent action on this and Other linea tions, it is a mere "tender.used by . some par ties to obtain certain privileges. for them= seltes from a great monopoly .to.. the .detri meat of the bide here. If such is not the case, how can we account for such proceed ings?. If they were, in a position not - to ap 'prove of these measures,• why not• remain silent? They either voluntarily placed them; selves in opposition to' the : interests of the people of Schuylkill County, or 'they weie forced into the 'present position they occupy. by some . Controfing power which they could Everything in Schuylkill County depends on the Coal 'trade; Independent of coal works, we have rolling mills, furnaces, ma chine shops, and in fact all kind of works erected on these laterals, together with large and populous towns, the people of which are interested, in cheap transportation -to market as much as those interested in mining coal,. and it is on this miserable quibble that our people are charged with practicing "an out .rageous fraud upon the Legislature," and re-, ipectable citizens held up to ridicule because some of them are men of small means ; but there are others who probably, are quite as wealthy as those who make this charge. We recollect very well when, many:years ago, some of these coal dealers lived 'in this Coun ty, and they did' not object to receive favors from even the.humblest signer on - these .petf tions; and it comes with an ill grace thus • to slander our citizens by charging, them with fraud when: they did not even allude to or ask the Coal Exchange of.
