Nnobj in North Carolina—The Abro. notion *o , C:re. Sickles' Order- , .The Ho. Rendered Col. Padget*. . Post OFF'S, CONVEDRIT X • ROADS (wich 13 in the Strait uv Kentucky), December 31, 18u"6.—For two weeks past I hey bin in North Carolina, and hey had, an opporunity. nv nein rtv service to.my friends an the good uy the cause. , 1 wuz there colleetin funds for the. new Col lege at this pint, to wick lam devoted, heart and sole, and wuz makin my ,home at Ker nel Abslum "PodgerS, who resides just back uv Rawley, and whose table and cellar, per mit-me to say, are unsurpassed in the South: Kernel Podgets is a . gentletnan uv the old skool, who llama Irn luxurious elegance onto a plantashun uv 1500 akers, and who heziroo piety into him and alluz Wears a shirt frill.— Afore the war be owned 200 niggers, and Lis soul runnin out after em, he licz managed aence the war, to collect the most uv em and. get thein together on the old place. He hez bin busily engaged in subdooin of em and bringin em back to their normal condishun,, but alas! ther wuz difficulties in the way. " The men 'Jiggers, with a obstinacy wick . I can't account for, refused to work for St ptr month, and the women bevin bin mostly mar riedto their hus:bancis by the chaplin uv a. regiment with was stasbened here'doorin the war, refoosed to rernom tiler old relashens and things looked serious. Most men would -hey yielded -to circumstances, and give up, but-Kernel Podgers wuz not av that stripe. He owed a dooty to these_ misguided tieing . with be felt he must fulfil; and besides, he is desirous uy builclin'anewthciuse next summer and sendin two daughters to a seminary next season, and he felt that he must bring 'em to ther senses. Ile sed that'be stood in the relasle , n uv a fther, figgeratively speak in;to all uv em, and wuz' he agoint_ to let em go -On flyin oh't uv 'tiler 'normal speef? Not . .The float day I wuz there a crisis occurred John Podgers, his son, insisted upon taking away the wife UN' a mulatto, and the nigger; forgetting his posistten; wuz impbacnt.: John tstrnek hint, and the' ee g rid d: wretch waded in and , whaled him . unmerciful. This uv course, cotid not be entlooreth— tThe Podgers' blood- riz, and the nigger wuz seized and eat- , ted till he died . .. - ..Ef I remember rlght .be expired while undergoin' ItMay: be he liVed till mornin% but, It Matteis not, ceptin that I like to be, accuia'e. • • It wuz a solemn and imPtessivescere.: The Kernel bed the Ethiopian's Wife pi:eSent doc rin the indiction uv theipunisbnient,: and to show. her that he did not - pereecd without. authority, before comine.nein be read to hcr from Seri pter the. chapters treat in tic II am and Hagar, and the passage cofinnencin "scr:, vance obey your masters," and then Walloped him with more vigger than I spozed wuz left in a mail so old. lle pinted to the nigger on the ground, after lie wuz cut down, and tel lin her that he hoped it wood be a leSson•to her, bade her go to, her quarters.. But the - perverse creecher didn't. She ran, away and complained-to the cfficer at the nearest post, who instid uv sendiu her back under 'guard, with his cothpliments to: the' Kernel, actilly forwarded her complaint to Gen. SickleS, who forthwith struck a-blow at the foundationsuv . the fabric-uv Southern Sosieiy, and. ordered. the arrest ov the• Kernel, Who wui to wuost placed in doorance vile., . • .. There w'az eggcitement — in the Inever saw sich a fel mentashen. • Mne run to and fro with hlaneht - cheeks, and asks "Wat next ? ,Is our rites to be taken from us? Is Johnson a holler mockery ?" And they made up a Purse and beggeti me to go to An : droo• and stand between em and destruelt- Sheri. I run up to Washington and :had.an interview with his Eggslency, the President. He knowd Kernel podgers--Lin his 'younger days be made his coats—and ez, I tetched on the old man, immured in ailistrial dungeon, he wept. But A. Johnson heZ decision uv character.: Wipin.hi3 eyes he isshood an or der for the revok ashen uv Sickle.seS• absurd order that niggers shnoelent be whipt,' and a special order commaudin the otbser who bed the Kernel in cygtody, to turn him over to the Civil Courts to be tried in accordance with the laws of NorthKarliny. . • Armed with these documents, I fleW back, and thelite I arrived I had tbesatisfackshen uv taken the 'Kernel out. uv Jail, and takin hiin afore. t Justis uv the Peace, where he gave bail to appear afore the Common Pleas to answer a charge of manslaughter, piefered by the Bidder uv the dead nigger. A' day or two after the case wuz heard I appearin for the Kernel. I held that the case be dismissed for the following reasons The charge uv manslaughter wuz absurd, .for the reason that iu the minds uv the South ern people there hez alluz bin the:gravest doubts ez to whether a nigger is actiliya m an . Lheld that the length uv , his heel, the thick ness uv - hiS- skull; the length uv his arm, all 'showd that he wuz uv a distink species. ET this is the case, ez a matter uv . course, the - Kernel goes free. • - 9: The Kernel can't be held, allowing the nagger to be a man. The laws IV the State uv North Karliny permit the whippen uv nig gers, but they don't prescribe the quantity uv whippin wich may be it.ilicted. It's a m-tt ter wick is left entirely to the 'discretion uv the whipper. It is a matter neither- .wich the whipper hez nothin to do ; neither_ hez the State. Ef the Kernel bed shot the nigger he wood be liable, for shooiin . aint permitted but cz Ahippin is, and ez the quantity a'n't prescribed, uv course it intends the matter to be left solely to the discreshen tiv the par ty. who hez the power to whin. • Nothin kin . be clearer than that. Shel Kernel- Pokers be punished becoz a nigger hedn't powers nv endoerance? I'ut bid it Leven! Here I rested the case.. I showed to " fbe satisfacshen of the CoUrt that the law was not only just but humane, and that any sicb absurdity ez punishin the Kernel for Carryin out its provisions wood' be strikin a blow at the frame work nv society. The Court coincided with me, and towunst discharged the Kernel, amid - the aClamashuns of the crowd. The event wuz sellebratid that afternoon by whippin every nigger within a circle up ten miles The exercise did our people good. It wuz goothin. In the meantime John Podgcrs hed gone afore a Justice av the Peace and made com- plaint uvSusan (that is the name nv the fe - male wich wurthe cause uv the difilkilty) cz a vagrant, and she wuz so declared by the Justice, and . put up an sold. ' , Under the eir• cumstances, no one would bid , again John, 'end She wuz struck off to him at -$5O, ,wich the Justis, under the pecoolyar circumstance's of the case, refoosed .. to take. I saw John a mareltin nv her home, and felt happy. . The Kernel's gratitood was bouudlis. I'r at kin J do forymi ?"sed hp, wringin riy hind in a fever uv joy. • "Nothin?” sed I, "nothin. In Loburg, ashes and plaster are added after, and some times before the lquid manure is applied ; in Lie,benwerda bone dust and. guano are applied with better effect than guano and Since the culture of forage plants has be come more , extensile, stock has been better fed, and large quantities of better manure baveteentnadei and which has been treat e d and kept with more care in the stable as well as, in the barnyard., In Altmark the meagre. remains in-the stable until it is hauled on the field, In Neuhaldersleben the stables have been built so as to have an apartment especi ally for manure, but it is believed that this plan is injurious to the animals— hog's ma nure is deemed to be especially noxious. In' order to conserve' the manure in the barn yard, it is mostly trodden gown compactly and strata of earth, plaster and 'lime are 'strewed between it with ; good results ; in Hauls calcareous sand is substituted ; in Hal-, berstadt moui# and peat are used. In Obis felde the horse, • cattle and hog manure, is fre quently thrown together in heaps, with strata of-peat in equal parts. Dry peat is also used in long straw for litter in sheep foids--th is prevents the evaporation of "the ammonia. As a rule, however, earth is strewed in th sheep folds, and _the sheep dung is rarely hauled away, except itis taken directly to the field and plowed under. In Halberstadt sheep dung is daily strewed over with a mixture of cwts. of plaster and :2 cwts; of bone dust to 120 cwtti. of manure.. Barnyard" - manure is generally used for forage and hoed crops, winter grain, pulse Mid rape. In Quereurt it is Omnd that manumit barley yields less than nnmanured in dry seasons, uialess the manure has been plowed under the previous year. In Oschersleben about six tons of manure aro applied per morgen (1) tha of an acre,) but in Ranis 10 to 15 tons are applied every thrco years—although sdme "very successful farmers apply this quantity every three years;" and they give as a reason that the land is very level and contains lime , and sand largely. As a rule, the manure is spread and plowed un der as fast as it is hauled on the field, except in Sonderhausen, it is hauled every month and spread, and then let it lie until plowing time. Experience has taught them. that the manure spread and lying on the field during Winter, inellovis the surface of the soil and has, an excellent effect. upon the : first crop, but very little or: no effect on succeeding ones: 'ln Halberstadt manure is usually plowed 6 to S Welles deep for grain crops, and 10 inches for, potatoes—this is 'done wi h a four horse team ; but in Dachwig it is plowed 3to 4 lathes only for grain crops. The cost of barnyard manure is very 'selative—where stock is well kept and. abundantly fed, the manure is produced at less 'cost than where stock is indifferently or poorly fed. The coat of producing 'a ton of manure, Including" straw, is estimated to cost from L. 75 to $3.- 25.. But even at these prices barnyard ma nure is held to be cheaper, more profitably and morereadily obtained than the artificial or commercial manures. ARTIVICIAL MINERAL MANURE AND GUANO. —Of the cocpxnercial manures,. Peruvian gu- - ano is the Most extensively used in the prov ince of Saxony, especially in connection with bone dust and superphosphates, The application of . commercial manures in gener al has of late rapidly increased, even among small farmers. Thus hi the small district - of Stumsdorf, - consisting: almost exclusively of • small farmers, there are now, at least 10,000 cwts. of guano,. and : 3,ooo _to 4,000 cwts. of superphosphates used every year. - The •ap plication ofguano is effected by: guano strew logmachines and partly by harrowing in ; when plowed in deeply it is not so effective. Guano has very little effect when . applied on a limestone soil. In the district of Kosthen, guano and .phosphate of lime mixed in equal •parts, is chiefly. applied for sugar beets : on fields bearing the second crop, 1# cwts. are applied;.on' exhausted fields, 2 .cwts. and even more per morgen. A farmer in the district of Nordhausen, during a - period of thirteen years, applied .guano partly mixed With bone dust, plasterand earth, for cereals, beets and potatoes with excellent success, In Gentbin experience has proved that the constant application of guano.is injurious.— Farmers are of.the opinion that artificial ma mires can have a lasting effect only in con pection with , a due propertien of barnyard or other veglable manures ; therefore after ma nuring for two or three years with artificiel manures, they apply barnyard munure ex clusively and in generous quantities. In Ha uls several farmers applied oil cake as ma nure, and found it to be equally as efficient as guano, and that its effects-were of eilually long duration. :. Lionin Ifferrinta.—The careful collection of li quid manure in walled reserioirs, and its appli oation is being more' generaly adopted. In Er furt' this progressis due partly.to a iegal. decree forbidding theflow of liquid roanuree in the gut - tete,. and partly to, the recommendations of the agricultural society.. But on many estates it is not collected._ It ,is applied in various ways ; most generally it is used for moistening the corn. roat and dry manures, or else is mixed with peat. The most faforable'reaults were obtained where the liquid . manure was applied directly, to mea dows, and upon compost heaps.. The results of liquid'Marlare are not uniformly as- favomble on large manors where technological branches'of in. dustry are conducted. Experience, has 'demon strated that liquid manure amore effective on, hoed crops than on cereals. On an examination of farms competing in the culture of sugar beeta, it found that in Sonderhausen the yield of _ beets per merge)" had been increased .from 4500 7 t0 800 owts.4 by the application of the livid ma runs.- In Nensechmidstedt it has greatly in creased the product of potatoes. In Ewell:tan it. had an excellent effect .on)lfsizir (Indian ,00rn.)
