THE SITUATION OF TEE - POPE. When the French army shall be withdraWn from Rome, as; it will -be in December, the. Pope must withdrew too,- for there is an_"ir repressible. conflict' between that digni•ary. and the Roman people: -French bayonets have prevented the people of the ancient city frorri declaring for free, nationalized Italy, or they would have done so long since. As soon however, as those troops leave, it, is thought that they will'proMptly Make that declaration. In - rim therefore, of the.pros-, pective and almost certain exodus of the. Pope, it has become' an interesting question: in regard to the place where he will find a refuge. 'The Queen of Spain has hospitably offered him an' asylum; within her dominionsi, setting apart for his accommodation and com fort one of the' ancient and splendid Moorish palaces that. dot the south of Spain. I. is thought that he will decline this offer and se lect Malta for his - residence after leaving Roine.: This subject was before. the Catholic Council lately - in session it Baltimore,. with a. view of taking into, consideration* the ques- . Lion -whether America would. not afford him an asyluin in his declining Years.- - It is very doubtful whether the pope will ever quit., - It, is remarkable that the events of the past twenty years connected - with the decline of the temporal pOwer of the 'Pope, 'were pre dicted with -great accuracy -two hundred years ago. Prophetic writers on the subject predieted that in 1848 the power of the Pope . would commence to decline. In 1847 a work appeared fn Europe_ in which this prophecy was referred to: In less than six months after that work appeared-in 1848—the Pope fled in disguise from Rome to escape, violence at the-hands of an infuriated populace. The same work contained the prediction that the final overthrow Of the temporal power of the Pope would take place in 1867, and the 'tenor of late European intelligence leads us to stip pose that the catastrophe is at heed.. There 'was a similar prophecy- in regard to_ the French revolution, which .was fulfilled with like accuracy. ' The effect of the Pope's deposition . from his temporal throne, Will be to abridge hie : power and render him in the church but a. mere bishop._ Stripped of kingly preroga . • tives,- he loses the pomp and power,, the mil itary surroundings that gave effect to his. de It is a monarch blotted out from the list of kings'fis effectually as Bismarck dis posed of the small German rulers who stood in the way. of .Prussia's unity and power. But the Pope will not go .down, _if, go he must, without protesting in bold and fear less language, against, the Italian .Govern ment. One cannot read•the last allocution of the Pope without clearly seeing the irrecon cilahle disagreement between the - views of - the Pope and those of, the Ittilian people.' It condemns the whole poliCy of that Govern ment in terms that cannot be misunderstood. It complains, in particular, of the banishment of bishops from their dioceses, of the:siip preSsion of the religious orders, and of the introduction of civ;l marriage. It studiously • avoids the name of 'King or Italy" or "Gov erument of Italy, .! and uses instead the name of "Sub-Alpine Government." It is sPeci. ally severe on those "frenzied spices" - which declare that "the City of Rome mush share in:the unhappy Italian perturbation and re _hellion—nay, 'become its capital." . The Church, it says, will never be overpowered, but one particular nation may lose the true faith. In conclnsion, it adjures the soVer eigns to prevent with' all their strength "the torch of faith from being extinguished among them l y . • The effect of this as well as of the. Papal allocution on Russia; will• be to widen the gulf between the people and the temporal power of the Pope.. The Journal Debats, the liberal Catholic organ ofFiance, declares the Pope's proceeding, most unwise, and' that that it 'must hasten what he seeks to stay. But it should be understood that...the difference .be tween the people Of Italy and the Pope only Concerns the proper line of demarcation be tween the spiritual and the secular worlds. The popular vote of Italy very strongly in. gists On denying td the Church any influence upon secular affairs, and to this opinion the peOple cling, entirely regardless - ,of all the ecclesiastical censures pronounced against those who hold such views. , POpular opinion throughout the world strongly sympathizes with, the Italian people in their demand that all affairs of a strictly secular nature shill be he entirely independent of :Church legislation. This is, in particular, true - of the right claim ed by the' inhabitants of the Papal territory ' to decide their political fate._ '25 G 00 11.00 4 J 5 r 0 1 00 2 00 1 50 1 'to As our readers are aware, this noted prize, fighter and gambler has been elected to Con- gress by the people. of New York city.
