How TO 'PREVENT IRE NECF.SSITY OF ENT
LAROING THE PRISON---IE our last we stated
that the prison of. this County was too small
to contain the 'prisoners and give each a cell.
--We can get over that difficulty without spend
ing fifty or a hundred thousand dollars, by
just reforming the administration of affairs in
this County. A dishonest and reckless man
' agement of ,public ,affairs has the effect by,
imparing public morals, to fill our prison and
alms house.' If the taxpayers Will adopt this
course the expenses of the shamefully mis
managed poor house will be materially re
duced, and we will hear no more of the
necessity of enlarging the prison. - • -
COWAN is now the right hand man of Presi:

Col. - Forney led Johnson who was drunk,
Into Ids' room; to save him from the public

he fell upon the door and wasVnable to rise.
Cowan at that moment came in and , casting
his eyes on the disgusting scene`,, exclaimed,.
"Forney, why don't you kick the A--d
drunken hog out?" . These are the men the
ingrite now takes to his bosom, while, the
man who endeavored to shield him from pub
lic ridicule and contempt, was the first upon
whom he opened the Vials of wrath and vi
- tuperation. ThiCopperheads evidently knew
him. better than we, did, when they used 'to
• call him a clown, .a boor, a drunken beast,.
REDuctioN OF TAxEs —lt is confidently
predicted that one of the first acts of Con :
loess, when it reassembles, will be a gen
,eral reduction of taxation. The investiga
tions of the revenue commissioners provided
for at the late session of Congress, hive been
of a character to warrant are commendation
for tbe reduction of taxation—for the repeal
of the entire tax on manufactures and• raw
'material, as well as a reduction of the income
tax, making it three , per cent. - on incomes
over a thousand dollars:' It is only necessary
for the present Congress to make such a re
duction, to complete its gteat - acti hi favor of
the. country's - peace and prosperity. But for
other considerations*- looking to the welfare
of the great.consuniing and laboring ukase's'
of the country,. we trust that this contempla
ted reduction of taxation will:be speedily and
liberagf made. - •

SCHUYLKILL:COUNTY
THEIR DEPLORABLE CONDFTION.
• ,••••
A COM PART S
Schuylkill Couaiy affairs are terribly mis—
managed, by the.party in power.
,Its debt is.
enormous; made in by. the cupidity of.office
holders, and. is yearly increased because the
men whose duty it is to guard. the interests of
the County, reftise 'tO act. If the tax-payers
do not -move. in this matter, real: estate -will
diminish in value while the rates . of taxation'
will increase
Row is, it wiTh other countieS in the State?
Let us select two for comparison—Becks and
Lancaster, one largely Democratic, the other
largely Republican. Those counties paid as
large lfount les to, soldiers as Schuylkill did.
When the Rebellion commenced Lancaster
:had no clebt, while Berks had a dt bt larger
than that of. Schuylkill. : The flnar, zial con
