Rev. - Theo._ dore CuYler says truly, that "God wrote the law of - the Sabbath on ,man's . n a- ture. No law of health , is more .clear and imperative. The body demands a respite from toil thiough full font . and, twenty hours in -every DDT ell days; even the beast of the field mutely asks for the . fourth command ment. The very prvortion of: time that is ' required. for Sabbathrellef has been fixed- by that All-wise Creator who Made the. Sabbath for Os earthly children. That time ,cannot` 'be safely altered bya moment. In the Mad era of her revolution, infidel Fiance decreed that one day in ten should be a legal day of exemption from work. But medical men pronounced that the ehange was hurtful, and that the alloted time for rest was insufficient. Goa was wiser than infidelity or mammon. It : is with apprehension of the ultimate con sequences, that we observe an. effort being made at the present session of the Legisla ture, to legalize the running of passenger cars on the Sabbath in Philadelphia and elsewhere - in the State. Notwithstanding the craving , of human nature fer repose, its great neces -shy. which is Met by God's merciful provision of the Sabbath, - mercenary men are attempt ing to change what God made for man... Our position on this question is simply this : It is necessary • for the working. -and business ciasses to have at the end of every week of • • toil, one day of alisolute, - ; perfect rest, to re cuperate mind and body„ If we legalize as is yroposed, the running, of passenger cars on . the Sabbath, the :door will be opened to legal iziag .every, other known . trade and traffic, 'and weshould soon see stares and workshops opened oa that day by those who would be mercenary enough to work every day, in the • year, even if the act were slow. suicide, •.or murder as far as their empiciyees are con cerned. The whole objeßt in this movement of ._ running cars. printing papers, etc., on on Sunday, is to make money, and as capital• always did and will control labor, if working on Sunday should be legalized, the mechan c, clerk and, laboring-men, in - consequence • of the competition in business which - exi;,;s and which would compel many in self de_ fence, to open their phices.on Sunday, would ha've to• work on that day or lose their situa tions, ' • - Now, as webelieve that erery . man, woman and child require a Sabbath; 'and would . re quire it even if there was no eternity to pre pare for, we are utterly opposed to any en actment that will deprive them of the right tO . • • the day as . one of rest or ineocentrecreatiom We are aware of the arguments generally used in Tavor of cars running on Sunday, that, the owners of private carriages use them or. • that day, and frequently •go to church in` them. This may be tree to some extent . in ,the'cities—but any per Son who has resided in Philadelphia, knows that the number of pri vate carriageS 'used on Sunday is very' few Indeed, and those who do use theta, are not generally opposed to the cars running . on the Sabbath. But that is no argument, and those who use it must be hard run to sustain their position. We all know that laws cannot be ' made in any country to invade the private rightS of individuala or families. A. man may work in his house or office the whole Sab- 1 • bath - day, and so long es he does not annoy: his neighbor, and force others to pertake of - his work, no law ;can reach-such a person— but wheathattnan opens his place of business publicly. and coMmences tmflicing on the. Sabbath day, - and holds out the example to others to do so, then the law can, and ought' to prohibit such a ttse of this day of rest. .We do not believe that - we would commit a sin, if we had a horse that had rested, during . the week, and we chose to harness him our .. . selves, and compel ho other person. to do it for us; and takeri ride on. Sunday—but atthe same time we have refrained' from doing. so'! as much di 'possible, in order not to set such an example to others, because we believethe Sabbath can be spent in a more rational way; • —nor do we believe thatreadingeren secular, . newspapers on the Sabbath day is a sin—but at the same time we do not recollect ever purchasing a'newspaper on Sunday to read, because we,could always procure those pub- fished and sold on week days, sufficiently In -" • teresting and entertaining for our Wurposes, • In matters where trade between: man and man, enters, it' is different ; Then we must consult the best interests or-the whole com munity, .and regulate by judicious laws, pub lie economy. We know that there is some labor that must be-done on Sunday ; but it is • work mainly within the flintily, and it is for t 'me common-sense of the head to regulate it so that the distinctive feature of the Rest;day • may Mit be infringed upon. The Savior of inankind,, when in human form ort.this carth, , ,J eat on Sunday, to sustain His body, and per formed works of charity and mercy on that ; day. We believe that, some work and even • innocent recreation; as for instance, walking for health, meditation or coriversa- Lion, reading papers, etc., are admissable and proper.. But in of overworked•hd the name manity on this continent, we protest against legiSlation that will if secured, oped the, door to depriving the working classes and all oth ers of their one day of rest in seven. • - • About thirty-five years ago, it will be rec ,olleeted by those conversant with affairs then, that a reat crusade was madd . against the s clergy, because a petition wet sent to Con gress by several clergymen against' carrying the mall on, the Sabbatb; because there w,as • no.necessity for doing so, and . - that it was: setting a bad example. This raised a storm against the elergY--the *Cry of *" a union of Chbrch and State" Was raised, and -every miserable politician who supposed In; Could make a little capital out of it, raised his v o i ce in favor of Sunday` mails. Col RM. John- son, the great Democratic 'amalgamator, made .a-flaming. report against the clergy, Against " a union of Church State," and . . in favor of Sunday mails. The Democracy were in power, and". they run the mails in • order to put down the clergymen, just - as the Traitors-did in the North during the Rebel lion; because ministers, raised their voices in • the North, with but few exceptions, in favor of Liberty and Union against the Shareholder's Rebellion and Slavery-but only a few years passed away when the common sense Of the . _peciplit returned ; . :the Evils ceased running on . .• the "Sabbath ,:. and now there are but few routes on which the mail is caliled on the tabliath, and these -are arranged so as to Occupy as small_ a Rortion of it as possible. "Tun "RESOURcES:OF Tun tistos,"—This is the title of a lecture read in December- last, - before the. It is a conclusive expo sition' of the beneficial workings jri ' this country of.,a Yrotective . Tariff. The first impetus was given -in 1828, when as Mr. -Carey males it, a "National Free'rrade Sys tern" was 'lst adopted. Business in all brancheS, became active, and oar public deb , ,was extinguished. The Tariff of 184 1 6 destroyed this fabric of •presperity; and in 1857 came, the culmination 'of : the system of. Free Trade, merchants and manufacturers being ruined. Mr. Carey says . : : • • • .
