prominent coal operator, a respected citizen,
fair and generous employer, a fond, indul
gent•father, leaves his home in the morning
plethoric in hea‘h, buntlint- in spirit, at
pettee, • as he suppoles; with`all mankind, and
is brought home at night; a mutilated corpse.
He is assassinated by lurking . fiends, Within,
the sound of the court-house Willi* almost
within.the Berough limits.. . •
It is impossible to, deseribe the feeling that
pervaded this community* when the intelli
gence of the murder of My H. lit.. Dunne be
came known. Sorrow for the death, of so
estitujlble a citizen, and the shudder that ran
through every heart, brought the conviction
that the time had•arrived when protection in
County for life and property, must
he imperativelY demanded: Alt feel in view
of the:recurrence of outrages of all fieicrip
tiont now of daily Occurrence,..that the pow
er of the County, the POSSE COMIT/TUS, is;in -
- capable to preserve law and order. ~That .in
view of this fact, the State owes us prote.ctim ,
That It can give it to us by an armed police
or: military organization. last murder, *
fiendish •in conception and execution,
should induce not 'only .the people of
this County, but every person . interested
in th‘, production and. consumption of
coal, to urge the Legislature now in ses
sion, to authorize the. Governor to raise a re
-girnent for the coal regions,:even if the ex
penie must be. paid by a special tax upon
coal • Dnless something of this kind is:done,
the insecurity of life in this County, especially
to those engaged in superintending collieries,
i~ ill detei parties from acting,, and the result
will be a serious_ diminution in., the produe
•tion Of coal. and a *depreciation. in the value
of all-property connected therewith. Every
onsumer of coal is interested in this matter,
and should favor the project.' • -
The citizens of this County cannot be blind

ble slate of affairs r•hich exists in. this Coun

COUNTY ECONOMY
The manner• in widen . the . finances. of
Schuylkill County are amanaged, is a just
cause of emnplaint. Five years ago twenty
ftve thousand dollars paid the annual expenses
of the Alms. House and the salary of the
Treasurer oftlie County. For the year just
elo.sed, one hundred thousand dollars were
- required for the same purposes. 'lt is true
that there has been an increase to some ex
tent; in the expenses of the Alms House, but
It should not.reach front three to four - hurl-

turn of such trues and may act to keep their'
favorite party in posfer . here, but surely. - the 1
tax payers out of whose pockets- the money
comes to pay these unnecessarily enhanced'
public expenses, possess no interest beyond
having the finances of the County carefully
and ecopomic3lly managed. This they
should insist upon, aid as. appeals to the
Commisaioners to stop leaks ,In the County
Treasury, and statements - of the mismanage
ment at .the Alms House, appear to have no
_effect, the people shotild make a change and
put men into those offices who will pon
iterve the public . interests.
-There are many abuses that call for reform,
prominent among, Which . is the practice of
having a Poor House- Senator With the right
to select choice parcels of the public land
which he cart purchaie at private sale from
the Custodians. If the party in.power be
permitted to establish thisiletas a precedent;
we are fearful that in, course • of. time there
,_will be precious little puldic property left 'in
tbeCounty. For the Poor; Douse. Senator

and probably, othei'dignitaries of their par
-ty, having become very likely, millionaires,'
may desire to convert, the jail or court house
or poor house into private palatial-residences,
and quiet, negotiations can effect the transfer:."'

one portion of the public property, why can
it not be. dOne with all? Again, efficient
road laws, the enactment of which was pro
cared,by Republican Representatives in - the
Legislature from this Connty, and which .

dollars a year to the tai-payers, ' are threat- 1
ened with‘repeal it the present session of the
legislature, notwithstanding the fact that

the people who pay the bulk of the taxes, are
opposed.to such repeal. But tor party pur
