A third branch of education that should never be lost. sight of, bY: those entrusted with the care• and .responsibility of, training the rising generation Of females, Is UM proper de;;elopment of the- soehil nature: •. . • That God has Made us all social beings, a there truism _which it would tie folly to at. tempt to demonstrate. And that our social natures, as well as the physical and intelh3c ;mai,' are capable of development and . im pro.vement, .is-equally apparent. • The only- questions therefore, •that remain for diseussion, in this' connection, are those . . relating to the necessity ; cif the special devel opment of this social nature: woulan„ and the processes" by - . ivhicb : is.to be secured: TO dress points . therefore, we shall ask atten tion in our present communicatiOn.-. The" necessity for the special development of the social element-in .woman's nature, arises out of the relation - .she is deigned to sustain to man, to the family, antito the 'community . 2t large. As to the relaiion she is designed to, sustain to man, ,the. Bible tells us that she was Made by God to: be his companion and his helP . - -mate, to aid hiin in performing life's: duties, menduring Jife's ,trials, and in bear in,g up under life's. sorrows. But ew _can she do this Without , such a' :development of her . social, nature; as use are 'contending for? It is not her's to bear with min the drudgery of life; but it.is hers to lighten that drudgery by makingliis home bright and confortable, by greeting him with a smile whenever be enters, it, by beguiling his evening hours with pleasant conversation, reading to, him the current news of.-the day while he rests, and by every-other means at her disposal, impres sing him with 'the conviction that his home is the happiest place this side of Paradise. Did wives more frequently act thus toward their husbands, they would doubtless h4ve much less - cause to complain of evenings spent alone, and of cold neglect on the part of those who have promised them their undi vided esteem; 'and their warmest love. But if, in entire forgetfulness of their true position, those wives' will iiresist: in meeting their companions, - at the close of the, day, with'a frown,,ratherthan a smile, with a complaint; rather than a cheerful welcome; if they will appear in their presence in a garb that indicates indifference to all'their 'tastes and feelings; if, in 'short; the will be rough in the.ir appear aUCe, harsh in their , tonversation, churlish in spirit, uncouth in their; manners, and low.iu all their Lutes and pursuits, need we wonder if their Husbands, finding nothing at home to, please or interest thew, are :tempted to seek companionship and entertainment abroad? And need we wonder to find these husbands too often forming habits of vice 'that add to the wretchedness of home, and bringing themselies to premature graves? Alas. did young' ladies but know how much of their future happiness - in the' apacity of wives, will depenA upon the _social natures which they have acquired, they would pay much more attention to this branch of their 'education than they 'are accustomed to do. But another reason Joe the special . dei-elop:- ment of the social clement in "wornan's na ture, is found in the relatiori she is destined to sustain to the faMily, • .. - • -How saered, how important, how responsi ble is thin position of the mother. The child ren entrusted-to-her one, are not mere auto metons, that will in the future work out cer tain flied !necessitated results.. Nor are they mere creatures of sense, that will hereafter, be governed',wholly by instinct, and act - only ' as that instinct may direct. But they are beings endowed with intelligence, and stamp ed with immortality,' intelligence that must be: developed; -and 'properly, directed in'its future exercises---immortality, the character of which is to-be determined -by- the . course of action. freely chosen in' this life. In the training.cif'these ininiortal intelligences; lOW important that the mother from whom they are to receive their first and 'MOM . lasting im pressions, and by whose ; influence they areto lieliwgely fitted for life, and to some extent be prepared, for eternity, should be a thoroughly cultivated woman, and especially,' that her social nature should be developed to the full est extent pc6sible.- For, whether the child ren of a given fainily will, in their intercourse With each miler, and to the eye of theworld, present more the, appearance of a- pack of] hungry Wolves, or a fold of innocent, sportive; lambs, Will depend 'much upon the social character of the Mother. There may be ex ceptions to the rule, but as a general thing it will be found:to be true, that whenever you , find•a family of rude, uncultivated children, esPecially young children,- you will - also find . that.they are the cdspring,s of a rude,"unculti vated naOther. - And' let me add, as a corol lary from the•whole, the rude girls of to,day, whose social education is-being largely-if not wholly neglected will be the rude mothers of the, future, and will transmit -to , the coming generation a measure- of own rudeness..i But another reason:- for..the special cultiva-1 trop of the social elereent in woman's nature is foundlin ber relation to the Community at I large., and indeed to the civilizatiori of the! age. ,Ail history and observation grove that the type of a nation's civilization is determi ned. by the social positicof of womati.•. When- i 'ever shei is degraded to the Rosition•of ar tide of eomineree, or.reeognized-ruerely as, s; creature' provided for the gratification of the baser passions of pram, society will be found to be debased, sensual, and bint'sh. But on the oth4 hand; just in proportion as she in recognized in her true character, and•.,eleva-t -*IRA u-,. ted in hernaturee education,,:society3 pikes mll:des..lorra; - the 'mothers ef.thei vitx?ide gpftiMed; , 11Milr, intercourse , -mare Oleasatiti thoir, *waits more chimed, I and theirplessureivanesitisfaetturatilstthe lees,• grosser v notentirely obliterated, are at least driven into the' dark, - and practiced only In secret. Andthiebeing- the ease, how Important for society at large, t nay, for the. world itself, that woman be eleitited• by the fiiii . deVelopment of her social' nature. But you are - ready teask; • - , How can this deietopment be se cured? We answer, • . I. By. increased care on thepart ofparents and guardians ate home. Too little attention is pull to = _to= this matter in early childhood, Girls, tem - often in their earlier years, - under the pleti that they are too . young to know any `better, are allowed : Without restraint to culti vete unsodal•dispositions, :sitch as anger, jealously, pride, and selfishness. -And hence by the time their misguided parents begin to g!ve attention to the development of their so.: mai natures; they find to their sorrow that these unsocial habits lassie become so strong that it is rtext_to an impossibility to root them out or displace them by others that are better. All experience in the domestic circle bearing up2n this point, goes to show that this social training should commence with the first dawnings of reason in the-little child, and should be continued with care and with per severance until thatimmature child has grown to a fully - developed woman. The efforts of parents id this direction should be - aided and supplemented by the teachers ot our common !schools' and our higher seminaries. Each• child should be made a separate study ' by the. teacher, until all the peouliarities of its natural disposition are fully understood. and the power hashean secured of so directing ha education as to suppress and destroy whatever is objections - ble, and'tci develope and cultivate whatever is good. Every manifestation of selfishness, of Insughtiness, of rudeness, arid of incivility in the school girl should be promptly checked by' the teacher, and she should be taught, . :both: by example and - precept; to cultivate those graces that will recommend-her to the most virtuous and refined, and in spite of every : : disadvantage as to birth, wealth, or otherwise, gitte her a -place in the future in the first circles of Society. But I think much May be done for the accomplishmentof this desired result in the future. I3y the cultivation of a more correct sen timent on the subject in the community gen erally. Too 'often persons are esteetned, not in proportion to this cultivation, but because of some adventitious circumstance, as family . wealth; &c ,The rude, saucy, unsocial young lady of fortune is ofteu carested and flattered because she is rich, whilst the poor, hut tru ly virtuous: intelligent and refined lady is slighted, rieglected, almost insulted, _because she is "poor. I need not say that this is all wrong. Every man's moral sense tells him that it is - wrong, and that it might to be, and must be corrected', before we, as a people can reach that higher degree of. civilization that is within our reach. We must learn to -eie teem others according to their real:worth.- We must especially learn to "place . a proper estimate - upon s.ocial character in wdman, wherever we find it. whether in the - 1 - Tetely mansions of the opulent, or the humble abodes of the virtuous poor. We must show to the rude and uncultivated Woman that wealth cannot atone for a want of merit, and to the: pure and virtuous, that poverty cannot de tract from our estimate of this merit, - With this corrected tone of public senti ment, cornbined with proper care and an ef fort. on the part of parents, guardians and teachers,-I am: convinced that a lunch higher and better lot m of social education may be se cured the ladies of the coming generation. and through them to the nation at large, and indeed,- to the world. The subject is at least 1 worth oer. attention, and the object to be t gained worthy of our best efforts. ,Let each, therefore resolve to do, what he eau to con tribute to the result. desired—the social edu cation of woman - . - 31:. J. B. CO?*:,IICATSD.] lIISSIONARY INNIVERSARY. The 31.: E. Church of this Borough, on Sab bath, 12th inst., pursuant to' notice, held. its Missionary Anniversary. The day provedto be the most stormy Sabbath of the Winter; but ncuwithstanding the storm, large congre-, gations were out both morning and evening to hear the Corresponding Secretary, Rev. Dr. Durbin,' and to trinke t their annual eontribu tions.to the great missionary organization of this growing •denomination. The Ductor,in his clear expositions of God's - work, his in-, tetligentrepresentations of the Church's duty in relation to the world, and in his powerful. • appeals to All to meet their share of the re sponsibility resting upon the church, stirred the-hearts of his auditors, and made them: feel that it was indeed more blessed to give than to receive. - The Sabbath School Anniversary in the afterndon was also an entire success. The designs and mottoes presented by the several classes exhibited a great deal of taste, both in their selection and in the manner in wljch thu were gotten up. • The reports of the - different classes for the year presented au eggregate of $334, one -half •of which goes, tor the support of the School, and the other' half••to the Missionary After a neat 'and' very appropriate address by Rev. Mr. Riley, of the First Presbyteriari Church ot this Borough,. the Pastor of the Church proposed that the children should 'give'S.,lso to make President Lincoln 'a' Life Director of the llissionary Society. The classes promptly responded through their teachers, and . in- a few moments the amount was made up, with 'a surplus of $l3. It was then proposed that the parents and friends of, the children present should increase this Surplus to $l3O, to make Lieut. Geu. Grant a Life Director. This too was heartily respond ed to, ano_ in a very shOrt -date the: amount was 'raised,: thus making for the School for the year. a contribution of, $462 for the Missional• ry Society, aside from what was raised for its oyrn support; the Christian Commission, The total collection for the congrega tion and the school will be but• little short of $1400; or an advance on last.year's collection or. more than'so per emit.. This is well done, and indicates the existence. in Pottsville of a live Methodist Church that may be relied upon in the 'future to do its part, in. sustaining all the benevelent enterprises of the age. In this connection we wish to say, that our reports of the proceedings of the Bible Society of week - beforalast unintentionally misrepre:- sented Rev. J."-B. McCullough, the Pastor of this Chprch, la relation to-the amount he ex pected to raise for missionary purposes. -.He did not say, as reported, that he expectelto raise tea times as much as the Ladies Bible -Society had 'done, or, a sum of $2600 ; but that said Society ought to have: raised in Pottsville arid vicinity at least ten times the , 'amount it lead done, and would nave rais,ed it if the * people' had appreciated the importance of the' work in which' they were engaged. And as - an evidence that spch a result might be secured, ha stated -that; he expected to raise in-his own congregation' pn the follow ing Sabbath for the single cause of mission from $lO4O to $1.5)0. • LETTER FROM ST.
