They can be found engaging the enemy, amd ready to .sacrifice - their lives .at any time. II hope it will soon become so that danger Will, be at an erid. The enemy are trying all they can to. keep up appearances' but, my, idea of it is they are going up; their cause shall never rise again to the extent, it has in past days. ' Let Us look for success in the . future. Our army is successful at all' points, while Den. Grant Is moving . on. Richmond. _Our gallant leader,; - Gen. Sherman, and his army "cry onto Atlan ta."' Lei those at homesemember tlie soldiers in the field, the danger they are in night and day facing the enemy, watching their move ments: As .I ha% but little time et present -and fearing my letter will occupy' too much space Of your columni, I will not dwell any longer on the •former Subject,- but will endeav or to' give • you a . history of 'our move ments since leaving, our camp at Nashville, Tenn. After receiving.our arms, horses, and eqUipments; we left camp and tonic up-our line of march on the 23d of April, arrivrng at Franklin and encamped '• Our next - day's' march we.reached Columbia, Where we en camped until the 30th of April, when we were ordered to saddle up and move .on, which was. done each day. Making good , traveling until •we came to Rome.; Ga., where'we had' a small fight with them. On our niareh to this . place We passed through Shelbyville, Tulle hooma, over the Cumberland mountains go ing through Stevenson, Ala., Bridgeport, and Lookout MOontain, where.we began to feel the enemy atßaily . Cross Roads,' Ga., moved -forward to Lafityette, and on the move until. the 12th, of May. Here We heard heavy can nonading in the, direction of. net. Hill, - Buzzard_ Roost Here they wereranked and beat 4 hasty reheat: .On the.ls We started '2n on - our second move toward Roe, our ad vance skirmishers' driving in their pickets and moved on to Ronie, killing 1 ' captain, and 2 Lieutenants; besides wounding several of ;them. They opened onus with artillery but did no damage: They - betrig in superior numbers we accomplished our 'movement,: tearing up - their Rail Road, and withdrew - until the' rBth, theist • Battalion on picket, Composed of Company E, I, and A; company D being ori Gen. Garrards staff, leaving us only 3 companies, hero at this post. The 'enemy got in our rear but•the 7th: Pa., and 4th Michigan drove them on a retreat. . -. On - the 19th came another lively time. We started for Kingston. When we arrived- at this town, heavy fighting was going on in front. We got orders to double quick :tol reinforee them in action; we went on a gallop for :3 miles as fast as our column could move. We arrived at the scene of action, dismounted, taking, away the led horses, while the Regi-. nient began to -throw up' breastworks, and our artillery - was placed in position; and in a short time we were ready for hot work. At the same time we .were getting reinforcements of :Infantry and Artillery, but as good luck woialthhave it they still kept on running, and leaving 'us without battle. • Our Cavalry Brig ade, consisting of the :7th Penna., - 4th Regu lars, and 4th •Michrgan; pursued them for many miles, and finding we had; gone far enough for that trauip, it being nearly two o'clock, A. 31., we fell: back and ,went into camp, close to the Etawaw River, On the 28th we were in line Of battle till nightiwith no opposition. On the 27th, our Brigade was in a heavy-fight ill day. They made three difier ent charges and were, repulsed, losing 900 killed and wounded. Up to the 30th alt was quiet, until they began to mass a heavy line on our right, and tried to flank us,lbut to no purpose. We were 'skirmishingfoi days and nights, and -after being- well tired and worn dow we were relieved and moved' ,on to Dallas, where we encamped, and stayed'until the Bth, when we left camp and changed po sition. - On the 9th our Regiment 'charged the enemy on foot near Big Shanty, a small .village by that name,. repulsed them, and got back to camp. On the 10th wet4arted out again, the Ist Battalion in the advance of the Division. We met the enemy at their ral lying post, and our men charged them.. We were fighting all day. Gen. Wheeler was in command bf the Rebel cavalry here: Our loss 7 Was slight. J.n my next .I will give you our company muster roll, and the - killed and wounded. While serving in ,Mississippi, recently, he, wrote 4o friend in _Union County a letter, pub.- lished Ih the MifflinburgTelegraph, _the con= elusion of which .we, quote : . •There is -another thing that will have much to dO with the closing up of this war during the next, year, and that is the re-elec tion of Abraham Lincoln. It will discourage the rebels more than the loss of Richmond. They will see that the North: is determined not to compromise with' traitors, 'and they will begin. to count the cost of carrying' on this war four years longer. It will also have a good effect on foreign Tuitions.
