They are. worth read. ing r. . . "It is nearly ten years since a full crop cf . Wheat has been produced' in this State—the, prevalence of the midge (mis•called weevil) in those sections which formerly produced the great staple most abundantly, and t h e consequent partial or entire destruction of the crop, having caused a great change in agriculturatoperationd and materially depot. ciated the value of firming lands in many localities. Farmers who had mainly cabin. ted'end depended upon the wheat crop for a long-series of years, were suddenly confound. ed by the appearance and mew of a myr• iad-heacied enemy, and knew .not what to do to alleviate the calamity. In some districts , of Central and Western New York, wheat culture was given up with scarcely au effort to head or counteract an enemy which seem; ed more numerous and devouring than the locusts of Egypt, and attention directed tq other crops, stock-breeding, grazing and dairy ing—thus inaugurating a comparatively new system of husbandry over a Urge ettent of country, The change was of course some• what difficult and expensive, so that the prof. its of the farm were, for a , time at least, great. ly diminished. In some localities, however, many farmers continued to sow and harvest wheat, theugh generally with little success until recently and after adopting a change of varieties and other requiiites. The ordeal has been a severe one, but the skies are brightering, and we believe that wheat can again be abundantly and profits. bly grown in sections where the midge has prevailed cud proved so very destructive for several years. Indeed we think 'the experi ence of wise and! prudent cultivators has ad. :ninthly demonstrated-the correctness of this opiniou. Last year. many farmers succeeded in evading the midge, and growing excellent and profitable crops of talent—and their sue. cess induced others to sow somewhat exten sively last fall, from which a good yield has , been obtained the present season. Thu re• stilt has been achieved, mainly, ..by a change or varieties, time of sowing, and mode of cal. tote. Though the weather tas been remark. ably favorable to the growth and maturity of the wheat plant this- season, the success of our cultivators is in a great measure attribie table to their wisdom and r. foresight in man. agement—for the midge was not destroyed k t the June frost, as many suppose, burn,. peered in myri ad swarms at the usual period, ready to attack and destroy the staff ofr - life. The wheat plant escaped ; only for the reason that it %yds au fair advanced at the period when the insect usually operates as to be invulner able. Within the past month wo hive devotekno little time and attention to the investigation of this subject; . visiting . various localities in this region for the purpose• of examining the growing wheat of different - varieties, and as• certain as to time of sowing pod cultute. 7 , We have seen as fine fields of wheat in vs. riot's parts of this . county as were grown pre. vious to 'the .appearance of the midge. ,In every instance where early varieties were sown - at the !proper time un good, dry and properly prepared soil, we have found the crops good—excepting only where the severe June frost proved injurious. . REARING AND MANAGENENT OF COM Colts should be-taken from the dam whi about six months old, if in a good conditie, and stint np in - a house loose, or. in a sad yard, (if the yard is large they are likely to ' ts ru thenoselses Poor,) with a fence that they cannot leap. It is at this time they usually acquire the habit of leaping which follows . them thiough life.- They should be kept oat of aight4and ;hearing of the dam, as much as I possible. shey may be allowed to rejoin 1 each °thee Once ft, day, for a short lime, in order that the foal may empty the udder, and not be suddenly deprived of its natural food. They hould be fed with oat meal and sweet apples sliced; about two pints of the , formegand two quarts of the latter, three . times a,dav, with a sufficiency of good limo. hay. They , should eat out of a manger about as high as they naturally hold their heads—a stable with earth fou ndation, s kept dry with straw ,— chaff , or leaves is preferable —if on a stable floor, their' dung should re main 'with occasionally, leveling off, and pro. vided with litter—they should be let out daily for exercise, and should not be tied in the stable. Continue this feed through the win ter. If fed oats, they should be soaked. There is no period which is of more imper• lance than the first winter. We frequently see very proMising colts make poor horses from want of proper management When young. They should on no account he al lowed to get poor while growing, unless it tie on grass when three. years 'old; fora short time this is thought by some to.be beneficial No investment that the farmer en make will pay, better than keeping. colts ' a good cat dition. On the " other hand I ey should not ~,,, be too fat, nor forced to maturity too soon, or you may give them a kind Of hot-bed growth. 317A1117RING HAY There appears to be a great diversity of opinion' in regard to the best method' of as- certaining the Weight of hay by admeasurer ment. One writer in this State says ; "Mul. • tiPly the length, breadth and height of the hay into each other, and. if it is some what settled, ten solid yards (270 cubic feet) will weigh a ton. Clover will take from elev. en to twelve yards to a ton." Another says: "For timothy and blue grass, it ,will require seventeen cubic yards (459 cubits feet) to make a ton. Clover bay will 'require 512 cubic feet, or eight feet iqtfore." Another, from Maine says: "600 cubic feet hare been sold here'for a ton ; but in very large, deep' bllys where thp , pressure is immense, 500 cu bic feet would make a ton. Clover would be lighter." One from Vermont, says "From :16Ct to 500 cubic feet make a ton, according to how much the hay is settled." In a work pitblished some years ago, the author gives 268 cubic feet as a ton. Loi t it Scotch author, says: "Hay in a field.rick• weighs somewhat better than 112 pounds per cubic yard ; when 1 it has Veen some time stacked,it weighs from 'll4O to 180 pounds per cubic yard ; when , old 200 pounds per cubic. pare The New Jer sey Farmer states that from 700 to 800 cubic feet are- required to make a ton of 2000 poundif• . The rule we have used, where hay is tolera• bly compact in the stack or mow, is to aliow fifteen cubic lards, or 905 cubic feet, fur ton (2000:pounds) of clover hay, and four• teen cubic- yards for timothy. We should be glad if our correspondents, irho have tested this matter by actual meas. rement and weight, would give us their re. ults.--G'eniaree Former. lecipts.
