TIM COLLIERIES AND IRON WORKS OF SOUTH WALES. .411.23.533..ritAaitc0 331sarticlects I ~ At. Merthyr, we leave the limits of the Bitumi nous Coalfield, and proceeding westward, reach, in the Vale of Reath, the•first •of the Anthracite Iron Works of South Wales. • These arul 'Rioted near •the village of Glyn Reath, in the vicinity of the Brained to Merthyr and on a Canatr-15 miles long—which connects them with tlit Bristol Channel at Port Talbot.— They are knc wn as the Abernant Narks, and be, long,: together with the adjacent mines, to the "Reath Abbey" Iron Company. . 1 The Furnaces. The Abernant furnaces are three 'in number.— They are all . Worked by the 66T dust: In one, the so-called "waste gases" are utilised. Two , of these furnaces are comparatively old, having been builtieu years. They are of small capacity, and produce only from .4} to 5 bins of iron, in a day of twelve hours—or about :0 tons, per ,week.— The third furnace has been • built within. two years, and is 'much larger, yielding 105 tons per week. • • The total capacity of the three furnaces is 245 Welch tons per week ; a yield which his been al most equalled by that of a single furnace in the Anthracite District of Pennsylvania. Thotigh. these furnaces are called "Anthracite Furnaces," it must not be supposed that stone coal is their pole fuel. Froin some cause, it has been found 1 necessary to mix Ditatinois Coke, brought:from a distance, With the raw product of the surrounding mines. , . lolls smaller furnace, this mixture is in the proportion, (by bulky abA. of Coke to 4 of An thracite,—alternating with 1 to 3.• In the large furnace, the proportion iti increased, and-consists of equal quacities of Coke and Anthiacite. The larger the F rnace, the greater-the admixture of Coke requir d. The cause of this, I suppose, is the relief aff rded by the Coke, to the dead weight f of uninfiammable Anthracite, lying in . the fur nace. 1 The Coke used is expensive, as it has to bp' manufactured, and brought from a distance of 10 or 12 miles, by Canal. _lt is made at Peel on the southern outcrop of theCosil basin where the same veins of Coal are Bituminous, which. iteleon the north crop, are Anthracite.. - , Very - few Of the furnaces in Glamorgan/hire, it seems, hare yet learned the Pennsylvania art .of.making Ir o n with Anthracite, and with.that alone. I say ‘fPennsylvai:ia art"—for, though the merit of lhaving flrit succeeded in the appli cation of thiis Coal to Iron furnaces, belongs to Crane, a We ()bran, yet tai judge from the pres ent condition of the Iroik.manufacture in the An thracite distr ict., of the teepee tire countries, Wales acl Penaylrania, any disinterested observer m t pronounce the pupils in advance of their rg tea e. , 1 ti . ~ The Ore used in the Abernant Furnaces, is a nearly equal mixture of rod Ore, imported from Lancashire, andased raw, with the calcined Welch ironstone from the same mines as the Anthracite. There are ten stoves used,in heating the blast for ' these three furnace.; and an engine of 200 horse power, to, drive it. Tho minerals are raised to the level of 'the lornaces by a small engine.. ....About '550 tons of Anthracite Coal, weekly, are consumed at ,these, works—besides the coke. The' pig-iron produced, is sold, to the different 'large Companies throughout:the country--.the "Tatifif aro," the "Cifarthfa" AK This is Alio ease , with the iron made at most of the smaller works in the Anthracite District. It is conveyed to these mills, by Railroad or Canal. . :The eharaker.. of the Anthracite used, is that of a hard, dense, brilliant Coal, with metallic lus tre, irregular fracture, and occasional whitish spooks, which their it to boa "White Ash.", Why the furnaces' cannot use it, without - recourse to Coke, it is difficult to say. Some eight years ago, Coal alone was used, when the yield' did not ex ceed 3i• tons' of Iron, in a day of twelve hours, or less than .50 tons per week. Sinerthe mixture of Coke has been introduced—in the proportions named above—the yield has been much increased. 1. The Colliery. The Colliery attached to these Works, and owned together with the Purnaces, by the Reath Abbey Company, who have other extensive mines and Iron works along the Vale of Reath, is known as "Pwliferoo," and has been opened 33 years: •, 1 It produces about 225 tons of Enthracite Coal, daily.- Of this production, 126 tons, intended for , sale, for litho burning, hop-drying, household, and" various purposes, are sent by Canal,Nto the Ocean' near Swansea.. The remaining 100 tons spi, also by canal, lEmiles, to the Iron Furnaces. For the latter, only the large, picked Coal bead..
