It is one of the no alterable jaws of trade that purchasers always hold bark in a falling market, while everybody bnys in a rising market.till the necessary articles they require, if they hove the means to do so. Under these circumstances we firmly believe that Coal can be laid in now frain 50 to 75 cents per ton less than it can. be in' September; in all the markets East of New York ;.nnd we would ad vise those consumers who have the means to take their supplies now, if they desire to savo r ;the ad vance. We are aware that Coal, for Elie last two years, sold rather lower nt the close of 'the aeas , ,n `than at the opening—tbis was caused by the sup ply proving larger than was anticipated—but every reflecting person, who closely examines the above figures, and the present state of ilia Veda, must he satisfied that such cannot, nor will not be the case the ensuing fall and winter. The increase of Anthracite thrown into the market fortho last five years reached . 3,196,443 tons-5 divided into this, would give the annual increase 630,236 ton's. During two of these five -years, the markets'Were completely cleaned out of coal, and prices ruled 'veriltigh. For the last' five years the increase of Bituminous and Semi- Anthracite, including the Foreign importations, destined for. the Atlanticimarkets, reached 601,538 ton=, which divided by Afriies the annual increase at 138,07 tons. We doubt whether the increase this year from.all sonrces,"will exceed 80,000 tons, so that the deficiency in the Anthracite trade can not be supplied with these kinds of fuel. Such is the state of the trade now, and. we think the press; particularly in the Eastern mar. kets, that cannot be reached' in the winter sea., son with goal, would greatly benefit the eensu r , users Yg calling their attention to the present state of the Coal trade„and the probability of a material rise of price in the fall, if they , delay making their : purchases 'any longer. The-chief. mineral -productions of this country are those of coal, iron; copper, ,lead, and tin, which are raised in very large quaatities. The United Kingdom is,. moreover, noted as being the most favored country in the world for the, devel opeineut of mineral induiatty. Fuel, the indispen sable agent in the treatment of metalilferoes ores - , and the most powerful element in the proalnction of motiVe force, is distributed unequally through- I out the three countries, of England, Scotlariil and. Irelitid. The coal formation in these three di visions otthe British empire' occupies. rich and widely spread basins. The ores of iron; abun dan'tly distributed in several of the coal 'add- greatly to the value of these; anal .each one so circumstanced has' become the centre ofj a met alliferous district, where numerous Works produce irnti at a price so moderate that no • nation Can compete with this manufacture with any !chance •of success. In addition . to these advantages, the insular position of Great Britain, which allows the coal to be conveyed at at moderate expense wherever it is,wanted, is equally important in en abling the irentnbe conveyed by its ships tlirough out the world. COAL ...ern Inox.—The quantity of coal and iron .produced in ti e United Kingdom haS, until the publication also volume above allUded to, been only approitmausly known and variously estimated from time to time by different' enqui rers, and it is nut, •.,.herelore ' possible to give any comparative aceounts of the present production - with that of former, years. Some idea of the pro gress of these mines may, however, be obtained. by contrasting the number of miners employed at different periods thus, for instance, the poPula 4 : tion census for 1841 gives the total number eA gaged in the coal and iron mines as • I, : IS4I. 18 54. In coal mines, - 118.233) 219,995. - In iron mines, • 10.949 -- 20,109 , Or an increase of: 94 per cent. in the mint, and . 139 per cent. in tho iron mines in 1854.0ver '4l. Coal and iron rank foremost in the list of min ends, on account of their extensive production and value. • The area of the British coal fields is 'estimated et 4.250,000 acres; and' no leis than 64;661,000 tons of coal were raised in tbelUnited Kiiigdous in the year 1854, valued at 14,975.000 E. Of this sum 47,422 , 000t0ns were raised in Eng land:A(ll3,ooo in W , ide's, 7,443,000 in SiMtland, and 148,000 in Ireland. the urea of the French coal fields is about six times less than that, of Great Britain, whilst their production is 16 times less. The total number of collieries in thelUnited Kingdom in 1854 was 2327 ; of these 1704 were situate , ' in England, 306 in Wales, 38- in Scot- land, aid 19 in Ireland. The average number Of tone raised to each, 'workman employed lin the United Kingdom in 1854 was 293; in France, in 1842 1 the average was only 43G tons to each work'- lost! engaged. Pte liime.- 7 The-production of pig trod! in -the :United Kingdom exceeds that of the principal, and inlact, of the Whole European natiens put together; and even if the produce of thailUnited State which ranks next in amount to that of our own,, were thrown into the scale, the balaisce still turn in favor of this country. .1 • • Thy counties in which the manufactur4 of pig iron is carried on to the greatest:extent are those of ~ Stoirordshire, Noithumberland,Durbarri, North Yorkihire and Shropshire.' Scotland and Wales ;,,also large supplies ; hut the total make in Scotland or Wales, taken separately, falls short of, that produced annugly in the couitfy of Stafford, alone.- . .The following table shows the increasd in this • branch of the iron industry in 1354, as compared with 1825: I . , No.lron Furoaceslia Tons i l picdron: ',-Works ,-hlast~ produced Districts. 1925. 1864, 1825:1854. 1825. 1845. ltallorditdre, "54 72 81 16G 371, - 45 147.600 Shropshire, T.:. 13 36 28 86.323 124.800 Yorkshire, 'l4 14 32 • 21 35,308 73414 Derbyshire, . 0 13 14 25 19,184 127,500 North Wales, 9 7 8 41 13,100 32,900 • S. mth Wales, 37 48 -82 121 2=,6:* 750,000 Northumberland, rierham and N. The quantity of iron ore requited to mice a ton of pig-iron varies : According to quality in the dif ferent counties; thus, for instance, in - Northum berland and Durham, 4 tows is stated to be about the average proportion; in Yorkshire and Derby shire. 3 to 3i ton ; and in Shropshire , and St-if.. furdshire,. only 3 tons, I - '-Let us now Oinee at. this branch of our mining industor as contrasted with that of like nature in ,other cowls. In the year 1851, the preductiun 'of i the United States amounted to 564,- 755 tons, and in 1854 to 700,000 tons. hi France, in the:year 1952 the total prdduco of pig iron was 4,2'4611 tons. The next in importance stands thal of Prussia, which is however, considerably less than that of France, and therefore, nut wiirth in cluding here. The production of Russia, Sweden, Belgium and Austria, are in each instance, less than that of'Franee. A remittable fact is the great difference in the average, price of this arti cle in these countries. In.the United Kingdom in 1854, the average pride was 3.f. Is 9d Per ton; in the - United States in 1851, 4£ 128;j 1 and in France in 1852, no less than 5£ 6s. The great drawback to the..cheap and extensive production er,,iron in France, ariaes- frotn, the dearness of fuel, and to its extstenee in .parts of the country remote from tho iron districts, and thereby'necessitating; in most instances, the con veyance of the ore for the diatincilof many miles to the foundries and smelting-works, which• in= valves a considerable outlay, and tends greatly to enhtince the price of the manufactured article.— This expense is saved in this country by the prox imity of the coal and iron, as , mentioned at ' the beginning of this paper. j In Silesia, in Prussia, coal and iron arc found similarly situated to the like strata in Great Bri tain, but the cool is said to be of an inferior qual ity to English coal, and two-thirds of - the iron are there tnade in charcoal fires. • The prosperity of the iron manufacture in this country dates from tpo introduction of the . process of '.pud dling,l by Mr. Cort, in 1783, by which' process coal was substituted for its more costly predeces sor—charcoal. Previous to that date Great Bri tain obtained most of her manufactured iron from abroad, chiefly from Russia and Sweden. It is estimated' that the consumption of timber in-the year 1782, for the purpose of making bar! iron • in this country, amounted to no less than 69,Q00 loads,' rendering the price of iron tuore.thun dou ble that produced by pit coal. So great indeed was the destruction of woods, &c., that in many countieethe use of timber for charcoal fuel was prohibited by Act of Parliament, and coesequent ly the production of pig-iron was comparatively trifling in amount at that period to what it after-• wards became, under Mr. Cort's system. In consequence of 'the want of uniforW general Information in the several divisions of the subject, for earlier years, the following table of the pr,tA durtion and value of minerals in the United King dom in the year 1854, has been extracted from the "Mining Survey."
