into' journal .POTTSVILLE, PA. ;SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1850.- KANSA.S.—Atiairs in this Territory are at• tracting more than usual attention. The la bors of the Congressional Committee have been conauded, and the result transmitted to Washington in . spite of the efforts made by tile pro-slavery men to intercept the "sealed packages of the proceedings which were placed in charge of Gov. .Robinsuu to be de livered at the seat of Governinent. Every et fort. has-been' made by the' pro-slavery inva ders of Kansas, headed byithe Federal au thorities of the Territory to throw impedi ments in the way of the Committee of Investi gation, yet the strongest proofs we,rpaildticed even4rom Missouri witnesses, of the outrages which had been committed on the tights and persons of the free State men. When those -outrages were submitted in a legal form and their truth placed b,eyond,The power of being impugned, then Gov. Shannon, and the Fed eral District Judge Lecompte appeared mix, ions to emulate each other to see how far they could go, in making the authority of the late pretended Territorial Legislature respect ed, and its doings effectual. Proclamations . against rebels are issued, and United. States troops marched hither and -thither as if a part of the territory was really in - a state of • insur rection against the authority of the American Union. Governor Robinson and his col leagues, elected under the Topeka Constitu tion, have been indicted for high treason— when innocent according to the Constitution of the' United States of any such offence— while an attempt was made toarrest Reeder un der the very noses of the CommisSion; of which body-he was a member. The attempt failed however, and Reeder has made good his es cape;' The movement was made by Judge Lecompte for -tIM piirposo of embarrassing and impeding the investigation of the Congres sional Committee. The attempt was ti gross insult to the Federal House of Representatives but was met firmly and thwarted. Every account which reaches the East,-of ficial or otherwise, from Erinsas, proves most clearly, that the nets of outrage perpetrated by the pre.-slavery party are overlooked by the authorities, while a system of persecution to wards the free .State men, is prosecuted with impunity. .The last outrage reported, was upon the person of the Rev. Pardee Butler, at Atchinson, in Kansas, near the Missouri boundary line. An unotlernling man,—his only offence being that he had expressed him self in favor. of Kansas as a free State— he was seized by a party of Sin t h Canilina in. waders, who did not go to s ettle, but as' they expressed it,' CORI C ont to see Kansas through." and treated in the most cruel manner. Mr. Butler did _not resist his brutal captors, and after narrOwlv escaping living shot and:hung, he was tarred and feathered to the waist: and tbeu'scnt out of town. Thus the chivalry of South Carolina treated a minister of the Gos pel. ' . It is by 'Such treatment that the pro-slivery • party hope at last to secure the admiSsion of Kansas as a slave State. We agree wit h the New York Courier and Enquirer, that if the fre6 - State men of Kansas can be fitir/y out• voted at the polls, let it be'done; but subdued -by brute force, they never shall be. A wise and generous people, as the mass of Ameri cans most surely are, are arouse I lty• every appearance of oppressive measures, whether those measures am pushed boldly by the fi:;ree vr of overnment, or masked - undr 7 r the form of • ct justice. .1 unins ttever pointed a truer senti- Aita than wheh he wrote:—' . The Democratic National Convention will meet in Cincinnati 0 0 the al of June—next-Monday week. The proniinent candidates for the nomination are President Pierce ; Mr. Buchanan and .Tudge Douglas, and the struggle between the for ;titer gentlemen and. their adherents, grows warmer as . the time for the assembling of the convention draws near.
