,111liters' )ournat. POTTSVILLE, PA. SA - T - 111L - DAV' SEPTEMBER 15, 1855. THE NEW YORE COAL =E. Our COal Operators and other business men, having had time to consider the proba ble effect upon the Coal Trade, of the pro. posed railway from Auburn via Port Clinton, to Allentown—and to -judge of the Naliat3 of 'this routeas a Coal bearing line to New:York city, .throtigh" its• eastern connections—and having formed a highly favorable estimate of its advantages to Schuylkill , County—we feel warranted in deVoting a , portion of our space, in illustration of• this matter, to some extent. . The proposed Auburn,. Port Clinton and Allentown Railway, is not by any means a new, project. It was long since agitated by some of our far seeing Coal Men; and (if we - mistake not,) the funds for Mr. Fisher's survey of 1837, came from he private purses of a few public spirited indMduals, to whom this Region has 64ti, been indebted. 'ibis railway and its connections, beginning at Auburn (for the present) reaches, ..11en - town . in 38 miles,.Eastc.m in 55, and N. fork Harbor in 118 miles from Auburn, Or 128 from Pottsville—and there l• reno grades against the Coal Trade, exceeding, 22 feet per • mile, ascending. - The only objection urged againg this eon i/ecteil railway as a Coal bearing i\ne is. !hat it has ascending grades against the f:oal.— This is true. These grades, however, are moderate. Nevertheless, this objection is a lair one, and must be: fairly met. , • We apprelpud that the general effect of as-, ccndin4 grades, against a mineral business, has been very much exaggerated, by parties connected with the present . carriers, win ; are o f eourse .
