Pit trsi )6unta PO*SVILLE ! 'PA! SAT1311:1117&Y, 9EPTEMBES 8,1955. THE SLAVERY 4VESTIgN. It is a pitiable spectacle to witness the in sane attempts of fanatics to cast the odiuM of Slavery agitations upon the people of the North, and charge upon , the Northerners, all the abolition feelings entertained ,throughout the Union. If matter..were well studied and understood, it would be 'perceived that the .majority of real abolitionists are South ern men in Southern States, publishing abo lition papers. ' We can instance, as promi- • nent examples of the truth of the assertions; Cassius 31. Clef, and the Era, in abolition paper published in Washington, I:iy Man. From the very heart of slave districts -spring some of the most ultra abolition send 'merits, circulated throughout the Union. In pur opinion, were the feelings both-North and South, on this question, somewhat tempered, it would be more creditable to the country'at large, and inure more directly to the cultival tion of those internal relations necessary to the Complete proSperity of our otherwise fa vored land. WheU, however, this question is i.qinsted, as has been too often the case of I:ite years, we cannot fail to perceive the stu-, died efforts made to inculpate the North in a body, as prime movers and originators of the agitation. Now in the North, we know that the great • majority of intellident, reasoning and unpre . •jtelieeii citizens, are not opposed to slavery, as a local institution. Although, recognizing the "peculiar institution," as an evil, a blight,—it IS thought so among the better class of South ern ~ slave-holders themselves-7-yet they are ' willing that it shall be tolerated, just so long as it remains a State affair alone, as it now exists. When, however, lawless" - bogler mob ocracy? "popular sovereignty," forsooth, at tempts to force that "peculiar institution" upon the free people of a new territory—at tempts by force of arms to control the elec tions; freedom of speech, and even struts with revolver and bowie -knife in belt, into the legislative halls of a new territory; to thrust 'slavery, will ye, nill ye, upon the almost de ferfeeless pioneers of that territory, there bursts forth that honest, manly expression of opinion which Northerners would be less than men, to smother silently An their indignant s , bOsonis: • :, _ •Tu the extension of slavery into new terri tories, the people of the North are opposed, Let it exist for the present in the States whose prosperity, enterprise, influence acrd wealth,. it-exereises 'so depresiitig an effect upon i but beyond the boundaries of 'iliat dark quarter, it must not extend. While the people of the North entertain •a more liberal feeling towards the South than the Southerners, as a mass, appear disposed to award them credit for, yet they will not cease to demand, until obtained, in connection with many citizens of the South, the restoration of that violated compact between the North and South, the Missouri Compromise ; they ti•ill not cease to demand a stoppage of the out rages which, have desecrated the soil of Kan ;, and cast upon; Missouri an indelible blot of Amine. Although not abolitionists, as a the people bl• the North . are thoroughly disgusted with the action of pro•slavery, myr midons in Kansas; and the present indepen dent expression of opinion in the matter may be esteemed by our Southern friends, aboli ; but we can assure them it is but the muttering of a storm which can only be avoided by the adoption of liberal principles, and the re-establishment of the measure which met the approval of the greatest minds that have illumined the page - of Americh's history. Northerners are not abolitionists, in the disunion, fanatical sense of the term ; they are Americans. • Apropos . of this matter is an article in the St. Lijuis Intellvencer, , a pro-slavery paper, from' a .perusal - of which, one is inclined to 'think that the pro-slavery men who have been guilty of such outrageS in Kansas, will yet 11 kve to reap the consequences of their law less proceedings. The Intelligencer thus d& a tribes the effect of these outrages, showing t to they are already returning upon their rpetratOrS We are assured by two gentlemen of high • posit* in Western Missouri, but totally dif fering in seutiment—one upholding the oligarchy that controls the affair:3 and tramples upon the people's sovereignty of Kansas, the other deploring the accursed wad , ness of. the day—that matters are gloomy tm ough in Western Missouri. Business is Commerce is stagnant. Money is ex 're tingly scarce, and a panic pervades 'the The fifty thuitauud emigrants that might this -season to have pourpt over into ken as, are not there. The prairie sod re nilins unbroken. Th • sound of the axe and th e whoop of the husbandman are not heard. Western Missouri towns are net thromred with settlerS buying their outfits- aid equipments of husbandry. The fin Men find Ito market for their horses, mules,,-oxen and Caws. There is no new and large trade sorioging up in Kansas. The much vaunted ' ,Leases towns lie neglected, a nackery to -aicir owners . and-a laughing stock for all men. The Infelligencer is . right tee in the follow ing, uttered- with some warmth apparently, but showing that there are r i pen at the South' who both disapprove and deplore the repeal of the Missouri compromise, and trace that measure, to the action of polit i cal demagogues, with President Pierce's administration for their alders and abettors: ! . • . Missouri did not demand that repeal. The South nev er asked it.. Atchison' solicited it= and in moment of political insanity, the South con sented to the wrong, and made the wrong her own. This Was the suicide Of slavery.. Every step since taken has deepened the wrong, and enhanced the dinger., The free States organized Aid Societies, and sent their men to make Kansas free. ;It had been Free- Soil by solemn compact for thirty-five years, and they naturally were intensed to see its character changed. The South-would have been far more, if a slave terrirory had been thus, by an unexpected act Of Congress, con verted into Free-Soil. ; The free States had a right to be indignant that a long-life compromise had been repealed —and they :had a right. to keep Kansas free as it Lad been, by peaceful colonization.— They attempted nothing else. But a portion of the citizens of 7 .dhisouri, headed hI Atchi son and Strineiellow;denouriced the Northern emigrants as "pauper and hirelings,"because they were sent West. with the money of a so ciety ; aud so they had county meetings in Missouri, and raised inoney:ana sent Missou rians to Kansas to initke Kansas a slave terri tory! Unisons:—The Fair fof the benefit of the Episcopal c'hurch, which opened on Tuesday last, was c10t..413n Woduesday evening, the ladies having ditposep of their articles one; (14 earlier than they had lanticipated. The amount realized was about $4.00--fully meeting their exPeCtations. The jewelry store. of Mr.' Henry !Tittle, on Broad street. was hurglariuusly ented on Mon day evening,' ti:Ml rubbed of a, large quantity oil jewelry and virafehes, estimated at about $1100.! or $l2OO. Thil burglars gained admittance to the] store by remoVinK the sash: over the front ileor,l l which was bat slightly fastened with nails. They unscrewed a part of the luck and made their exit . through the dour. A burglary had been commit ted the - night Previous in Itlauch . Chunk, undoubt edly by the imam parties. Two me'werearrested . in Philadelphia yesti3rday, by racer Ben. Frank lin. They had been offering .watches at a pawn broker's shoji; and a considerUble number of watches and jewellery were found in their posses sion; some oftheut answering the description of those taken from Mr. Hittle's store. In addition!! to the particulars furnished last week of Mr. Maingay's proceedings iu eitinguish lug the tire iti;the E vein, I woultdAate- the follow, in,;: The "E" or "big" vein is from 20 to 22 foot in fhickness;dipping at an angle of 65°,gradu ally flattening as we proceed to Greenwood elope to 45°, The total length of the gangw4 from the mouth of the.EaSt tuntiel to the Messrs. CiirMr's slope at Greenwood, is about 600 feet; 10 feet . broad and abOut 8 feet high. ! The Working of this, vein has' been going on for 18 or 29 years, and may be considered as nearly "Worked out." A rough estimate has been niadedhat at the time when the rapid advanc i p of the fire put a stop to the Messrs. Carter's operittions, there remained very nearly 100,000 tons tof Coal, the greater portion of Which they expected to save ;:uu amount,. at present pri ctis, suffieiently.large to make it an object with the Little Schuylkill Co. to have the fire extinguished. Last week I tnentioned the space en fire, filled by the gas, 'at 500 feet in breadth, and 450 feet from the crop to the gangway. I find thitt the in the East tunnel, was erected about 1240 feet from the tire, and On the Greenwood side 870 feet, for the purpOo of excluding atinoipheric air, and . at the inn time confine the nitrogen gas when forced in, making 10,062,000 cubic fei.4 to be_ad.. . tied to the untnher given last week. =Owing tsti'the "breasts and very - many of the "pillars" having been worke4 very close to the crop, the superin cumbent rc;flis, ,Sec. had fallen iu nearly the whole distance to :Greenwood, causing immense holes which requited a g o va!, deal of labor and perse verance to close up so as to exclude the passage/of airy This tins one of the greatest difficulties Mr. Maingay hail to contend with, not merely qoul the quautitY of filling required, but from the dan- I ger attending it by the discharge of sulphurous I air. The men had to work in '"shifts" of ten min utes, and even then as many as 8 or 10 have been so overcome by the sulphur, that they were carried ' out in a state.bordering on ineindbility, and only recovered bi long continued applications of such romedies nsnvere to be had, such as bathing with cold water, applying smalling salts, and •in some instances administering emetics.. Since our last a partial examination of the in terior bas been made, which proved highly satis factory, and was confirmatory of my assertion that Mr: M's efftiits had been crowned with success.-- A further examination will not, and cannot be made until a new gangway is opened to the dip of the old one, which has fallen in for stone dis tance, causing as accumulation of water which completely bare any entrance from either end.— While the new gangway is being made the mine is to be kept filled with gas, a precaution very no cessary,as,too quick admittance of air might cause the tiro (should any remain unextin guished,) to kindle anew. • SAY.
