[Din Tll}l. MINERS . - JOVWCAL.] TO TEACHERS AND FRIENDS OF EDUCATION. The dawn of the Schuylkill Couhty Teach- I era' Institute is near at "hand, as the Annual session of the same is to be held in Middle port, commencing the first Thursday in May. We assert that it is the duty of every teacher (if it be possible), to attend these County As sociations. All friendly to the great cause of Education, we hope, will avail themselves of ! the opportunity and be present, and. partici-I pate, if they choose. in the . workings and dig emissions of the Institute. But it is .from the Teachefs of the County that the greatest share of the Institute -is to be composed of, If teachers absent themselves from these Con ventions, how can they expect to co-operate in this great, common cause in Which all are. mutually interested? Comity Institutes situ elate ' teachers to increased exertion—they become acquainted with each other; and that teacher who neglects these opportunities, will soon (if not already) fall 'in the rear of his I business, for icac/ting is a profession, and he succeeds best Who endeavors to be presmit oh all occasions where things appertaining to his business are-elucidated and 'discussed. Our Institute has already had a salutary 'effect up on the teachers and schools of the County.—;-- Teachers who attend these Institutes; rarely fail in going home better qualified to teach, conduct, govern and improve their schools, ', both morally and mentally, than those whoge • seats are thund vacant at our Conventio4. How often do we see ;nteresting reports Of Teachers' Institutes, held in those Countitis where they have been organised, and I think many of the teachers of Schuylkill County can truly say that we too have enjoyed a nun?- her of profitable as well as pleasant sessions among the mountains and Coal-fields of "Old The work is but just commenced.' ' Our means are now much better than they were when the Institute was first organised. We now have Counts- Superintendents to whom we look for great results. It is expec ted that these persons will take an active part in all our Associations, and through their en ergy, assisted by the co-operation of the teach ers,-, of the County, our future sessions mast 'be our, best. We know not why Schuylkill County may not prove to he the seat of scenes ;I witnessed in Instittite's held in varionsic, ouii , ties of this and sister States. Surely-, we need reformation and improyetnent in our teachers. I and schools, and the sure way to ;benefit the latter, is to commence, with the teacher, com mence at the filuntain, and if thdy are well fitted to perform the ditties of a teacher, our schools will soon show signs of reform. Sortie of the schools in the County (they being prin cipally in trotoughs). are well taught;, while quite too any are conducted (and sometimes farm/et) by persons quite as inconipetent to perform the duties of teacher as we would be to repair a disabled steam engine. We heed County Institutes to arouse to action thee sleeping teachers, something that will induce them to improve themselves, or if this cannot well he dune. better teachers trill go forth and drive them from their Business, as a -Iteacher effectually dead, ought not and not lung be ranked as one of the: pruti!ssion; County Institutes may, in a great measure, supply the deficiency of Normal schools. .Teachers meet together for mutual consultation upon the best plans of conducting and kovernin g •I schools—upon the most effectual modes of arousing the. intellectual faculties of the pu pil—upon the merits and demeritS of text books--upon the most improved plans of erecting school haildings, and how 'the same' may be best heated and ventilated; &c., &c. The teachers during the day, resolve thein selves into a teachers' class, while different teachers take charge of the various branches of' study, usually finind in our Common sehoolS, giving their plan of teaching the same inta sort of oral lecture, accompanied with demon= strations and explanations upon the black-; board ; and by this process each. teacher be comes the posiessor of the knowledge, sue cess and experrnee 'of till the others.. The evenings are generally occupied .with public lectures, pertinent to schools and their inter ests; being folloived by discussions upon the sentiments advaneed in the lectnlre. . -And new, Teachers, to. you the .appeal is made. Are you willing and ready to cast' in your several mites towardsmaking our Insti tute what it should be?, With you it must stand or. fall—with you rests the .conditiOn and prosperity of the schools of Schuylkill County—upon you depteids the success of our next session, and, in short, with yon rest the happiness and future condition of our country-. for "as the 'trig ix bent the tree is inclined:' If the duties of teachers are so great,,thea we cannot avail ourselves of more opportani s ties than is -necessary to qualify us to dia charge faithfully and effectually iill.the, duties which the teacher's profession imposes.=- , Teachers, are you desirous of preparing your selves fur the great work before you?
