Yon say, the reputed enemas of shafting, in this County, is greatly- esaggerated ;- in England the east is only 11200;per yard; adoording to this the MeGinnes' Shaft did not cost over $30,000, £c.. If you will refer to the speech of Hon. F. W. Hilo., on the presentation of the Silver sett, to Kr. McGinnis, yea will nd as follows, on page 7. "He continued to progress, and on this day from the great Shaft at St. Clair, 450 feet deep, ton by, eighten wide, coat exceeding cue kandi.-rf tionsenuf dollars, still but partially opened its." Now as I know Mr.llnghes did take an satin; interest in that work, I certainly have good rea son to quote from him, and I certainly thought that yeu were a better - American, or Tariff man than to be willing to bring our miners and - lobo- rers down to the price of the pauper labor of Eng. land: and not only that, but ask any English or I Welsh' miner wholes had experience in sinking ' shafts or 'tunnels, both •in English Coil Basins, i and in our Anthracite regions , and he will tell you that the difference in the metals is as two to . one, in . of Eng li sh ground. -Hence I think , \lr. Hughes' estimate nearest the' mark. Again, I J did not say tb• rent win 75 mite' per ton, but I -I did say - that it would, average 37}e per ton; and if! the present value of the land had to be expended f in improvements, the rent must be 75 cents per ton, Which is only a fair Falculation; again, as to faults, 'I hope my calcuhition is too high, but that amount bag not covered the expense up to this time; and-I think that you cannot be posted up -,in the price of rents; the lowest that I know of in the tichailkill legion is 30 cents per ton, and the good qollieries in general pay from 35 to 40 centa, and! make their own. improvements. You i•Anowlertie that at Tamaqua the r ent is now 50 tuts porton ' with the improvecne ts made, and I think it is p;obible if the owner s should spend roe present value of their prop sty in sinking 'hafts. they would expec t to be munerated by „ iiiereastk price of rent. You-admit that the Ope rators of the Sehnylkil region, under the present high Prices of iron, provisions, itc must receive from S 2 25 to $2 50 per ton this season, in order to obtain a remunerating profit—all of which I believe.', Hence my confidence in the Shamokin Basin to successfully compete with the Schuylkill. . And as for taking out so much larger amount' of Coal from Shafts than from elopes, I cannot see how you thrum that op.,- Equal power will raise 'vial weights an equal elevation in unequal space of time-by either vortical or slope lift, except:there ' may ho; little difference in friction in favorer the perpendicular lift (and I doubt this). In the pumping of Water, the perpendicular lift bee no doubt greatly the advantage over a slope lift. and i at that is a very heavy item in below-wa ter-levelcollieries, I prefer perpendicular shafts to 1 • liraes on that mount; but fortunately the Sha• i iitokin . Basin will not reqnire either Shafts or ' fortes for some time to come, ' /a we have such-a large amount of Coal above water level. i i• : Wit. H. MARSHALL. • Vcry few words wilLanswer all this. Since our first publication, owe have made enquiry .ef one tclig knotm, by whom we are re-assured •1 that the McGinnes. Shaft did not coat over ' ~ 530,000. Why Mr.- Hughes named a higher sum, orlwhether more than Th e expense of • the ''actual shaftingis included in his estimate, we do not know; but the fact is as we have =toted. ' The allusion to our American and , , Tariff principles Fs alto,s;etherirrelevant and, we must add, rather a steall-sized argument Um price of that kind of work, in England. . for anVldvth,- is well ascertained--$2OO a yard, and;, thou , h• much less of it has been - , , , e dunein th is country as yet, still enough. has heat done to reduce the expense to a similar titid substantially the same scale of prices.- 114 , 1e3,•51r. True, we did say that lur Coal men ought. to. receive the prices named, this season, and we 'still believe it would hi but a fair remuneration for theirla hor and Outlay ; but whether they wilt or not,' is quite another question: WUAT OF THE TEMPERANCE PROGRESS? —We append the proceedings of the State Central Committee's meeting at Harrisburg last Tuesday. They, it will be seen, on be half of the hosts of the friends of Temperance throughout the State, have by no means shoo cloned the great tind long-cherished cause of I'rohibitioti-4n Ithe contrary, they urge its .adoption more strongly than ever—lint under existing',circumstances, which their resolu tions explain, expediency suggested 4 some what different, or rather modified, courstfor the present. An out-and-out Prohibitory Law could doubtless bo passed in the lower House, but the concurrence of the Senate is a ques. tionalyle matter. The Committee; therefore, were temporarily content to,select from the several Temperance bills now before the Leg islature—'sit in all—that .one 'which they thought would come nearest to the main ob. jest of tlio Tompeaaued movement, and -to recommend its passage. This will concen trate the Temperance strength of both Houses upon this Measure, and thereby secure its sue oess. It is a good bill—its povisions compre. liensive and stringent—and if passed (and we have hardly a doubt of it) •will be .gerker ally hailed as one of the very best measures of tho Session. The Committee meeting is reported as fol lows : • state Prtibibltery Cesamittves. The sentiments of the Operators and business men generally of this Region are well understo o d on this sub. ject—they are, almost to. a man, opposed to the introduction of Coal companies in out . midst.' .gxperienee amply proves that wo can do well without them—the history of our Trade from the very beginning shows that fact. Individual enterprise is 'ull-sufficient for the pro3ecution of a legitimate trade here, and we desire no incopon}ted help. The pro,. posed Shaft Company has no friends herea 7 , }outs, except the few individuals who are im. mediately interested in •the speculations • promises. - , . Another profmitiob.before the Legislature —the extension of the" .North Ainerican Coal Co.'s charter--isevally,wanting in the gen. eral commendation' , of onr people. That is likewise well 4ettl4l. Or, if the Company must have a charter, as they allege, to keep their binds together, let them be stripped of all right to mine and deal in Coal, as .ft body ,corporate. These are sentiments unequivocally avowed by our . Coal men and generally understood at the same thie, that there may be no ex , cure whatever for the memhers of the Legis lature acting counter to the common wishes of our Region in this matter, we recommend that, letters be.forth with addressed to our See , ator and Representatives, expressing the views of the individual writers and of the comnanni=. ty at large, in regard to the two Companies named, and as to '.the establishMent of Ccal corporations in; our midst, generally. Efireorrrv l At.sts }roust:, AGAIN.—From thC lately Publislied report of this institution, we have been figuring .out certain of its ex penses, which, if correct, go to Show either, eery great want of economy in its manage.l meat, or that the Paupers live on the fat of the land. The cost of maintenance, indepen-i dent of the produce of a good farm of 2001 acres,- averages for each pauper about 19 cents per day, while in Dauphin County, under sirn;l ilar circunistances--a farm attached—thel cost is only abOut 12 cents, and in the Schap', kill County Priion, where everything ' , has to be bought at high . market.prices, the cost is but 18 cents for each prisoner—nearly all be ing adults, and mostly able-bcidied pertions.-1 If, our calculation he correct, the meat bill! alone of the Ali= House, at 8 cents a i ponnd I gives about sl9—s2o worth a year to.each in -1 mate, men, women and children ; while in an ordinary family, the meat bill at 12 cents a pound, doCs not average over $2O a head.—H No wonder the Poor House is well filled, if that is a sample of its bill of daily fair. The general merchandise account, we observe, looms up pretty largely, too. We. may take occasion to speak of this again. The truth is, we don't have the most implicit confidence in the managenient of this establishment, and if we can bring about a searching, investiga tion of its Wait*, we think we shall be "Cififi ferring an everlasting favor upon the tax payers of the County. siirCAMERON WIRE-PCLLtNG.--Strentious efforti are . making at Harrisburg to annnlthe proceedings of the late joint Convention ot 'the Legislature, to choose a U. The Convention naderitood this, and there being no immediate chince of agreement upon any other, wisely postponed the election. Why then bother about this matter any. lon ger ? No blanurcan be laid etadentin whose toom it originated, as ho Was at that tierie 4 visiting Presi dent Maelcati. The Murder of Poole ' in itself, was the result of a rowdy onslaught, such as is continually occurring among the class of persons to which its: participants' bhlonged, and under ordinary circumstances would -have . betiti regarded as merely ridding the City Of'dangerous and unworthy occupants, especially if the strong arm of the law had meted out summary7engeance . to the other actors in; the tragedy. 'The affair, however, has in slime way taken a sort of national tura: Americanism versus For eign Strength—a feet which in the present aspect of matters in this eft*, and indeed throughout the land, is sufficient to lend it overwhelming impor tance.'. , The tarn-out on ,Suaday, et the funeral of Poole, was by-far the largest delnonstration ever witness .ed in New York.
