were not a little surprised at the large yields
of istrious kinds of crops which he' obtains,
froth land which a few years since was rated
at s low price, and only used as a common
'paAtirage. The track is called Marblehead
creek. - Tit is almost an island, forming the
eastern Shore of the harbor, but joined on to
the main land by a low beach. It contains
240 acres. The soil is what be called hard
—the'solid rock, which forms the basin, crops
out in many places, and the debris of this,
and 'granite boulders are scattered over the
surface... Naturally the aspect of the place
vps 'rough and' forbidding.
•
. Mr: Brown's•first operations were of course
expensive. But the first crops showed that
the soil was strong, and encouraged him t o
'go,on. He has now about sixty-five aires en
closed and brought under the plow_ exclu•
sive' of forty acres at one end of the tract,
which forms a separate farm, and is leased.
Of the sixty acres, about forty are annually
in grass, and the remainder in vegetables and
grain. This year he cut one hundred tons
of English hay, which is rather less than an
average. _ • •

Correspondent of the Ohio Farmer, Mr. E.
Cattel, of Harrisville - , Harrison county, Ohio,
lins , tried keeping sheep both with mid with
but shelter, and has come to the conclusion
that it takes from half a bushel to a bushel
more corn to winter a sheep without than
with shelter, and asks; "would it not he well
fOr farmers generally, to make some temporary
shelter for the winter and thus save their
'feed?" We are satisfied that it would. Even
temporary shelter is better than none at all,
but permanent sheep sheds, in most pines,
,can be erected so cheaply that few farmers
'have any excuse. for being without them. Mr.
C. cuts all his fodder by hors% power in the
fall, and stows it away in the barn. This en
' tables him to feed it to much better advantage
