Another pada to be cpnsidered ii thecona

in the respective piacesiol worshp. The to

of England, in 1851, sinews to 5,317;915,
or sufficient for 29.7 per cent. of the t vial

1801 the Established' Church: supplied sut

-' The, next question le to what extent is
this accommodation ii:ctually used by the
English people. Thisl was ascertained by

would give bilk aggregate ol 12,549,326 per

IV . uw. what number aOtually did attend on

upon, the figures contafped in the 'schedules
it aapears that 7,261,032 "separate persons

These seven million4tud a quarterpersons

PENT A: AND Tun RECIPROCITY TREATY.--
The treaty is not a law. Kept in the
President's private drawer until a short time'
ago, and then rushed with indecent haste"
through the forms of legislattun, the people
of Peunsylvanta bare had th'e mriat meagre
opportunity to complain of the blow struck
at some of their interests. Our State bas
generally born ewith. so much patience the
kicks am( cuffs of the Democracy that 1111 r.
Pierce has
: thought it, safe to try the expert
meat once more. .Under this treaty, our
coal dealers are to compete with the Coca
dians on equal, terms, the duty of 30`per
cent ad valorem being abolished. Let unser
how this will work. : 14 Taylor's "Statistics,"
we find that, in 11816, a ton (2240 lbs.) of
Pietou coal costs $4 while a ton of Penn !
,ylvania autturacne costs 85 75. In 1848. •
, Nova Scotia coal cost in New York 84 69,
iuCludieg freight and duty. At Philadet-
Tina, in 1546, the Ptctou coal, duty not in
chided. cost 81 75. while the Allegheny lai
• mutinous cost $5 60 a ton. At the prest!ut
time, the Pictou ,undersells. duty not inclu
ded, the Pennsylvania anthracite at New
York city. These facts show conclusively
that the interests of the Keystone State have
been sacrificed by the present neministration.
We have ;been told 'by the administration
papers that our anthracite will be used tx•
tensively in Canada foundries and furnaces.
This may do fur the polittcans about Wath•
ington. Practical men know better.. Coke
is the fuel used for knelling purposes in
Canada. It is used •also in Cincinnati and
St. Louts. • Why assert that the Canada
iron smelters will have their habit miracu
lously
. changed, when our own cities, with
ea s y access to the. anthracite regions, eon
nOue to use coke? Of this Ind the lo
tutumous coal fields of Nova Scotia, Cape
Brethn, and Ncw Brunei:ea
haustible quantities. •
The Buffalo Democracy speaks of the Can
adarntnes as follows :
. The mouths of the St. Lawrence Gulf are
lack with coal. The whole south shore of
the Gulf Washes'against coal. Prince -Ed
ward's Island is a solid mass of coal, beneath
its covering of soil. Ne Moucelland, juts coal
into the. Gulf from Cape Angnille to Cape
Ray. It is'prabable.that the deposit of fuel
upon the Wecein side of this great Island, s
350 miles lung.. and from forty to sixty miles
- But few people in this country, hate any
accurate idea ol.the extent of the coaWorma
lion of' British America. From Pictou Har
bor in Nova ,Scotia, runs westerly a central
belt of coal, which is 13 miles wide and 100
miles long. The, beds to which it belongs
mead down' to the Bay of Fundy, and in

tLi- the reason that the conduct of most.men
is not what it should be, - and truths brought
home and enforced are apt to make their
pews feel rather uncomfortable. This class
of men arc great eulOgists of "doctrinal"
discourses, of sermons on faith ,and the
church, or some other theme which never
brings Christian duties home to their door;
but when a Christian's duties are portrayed.
and the subject is brought to bear in that
pointed and unequivocal style which! makes
them feel that " thoti art the. min," they
consider. it quite undignified, impolite and
unbecoming in the pulpit for the preacher to
bring these homely truths - " betwixt the .
wind and their nobility." A New York pa
per, sympathizing with this class of Sunday
Christians, has'lately undertaken to tell cler
gymen that they must not descend to , such
homely topics as Religion in every day life,
io which Henry Ward Beecher replies;
We have ho doubt that a rigorous ;land.
lord,; having, sharked it all the week, screw
ing and gripping among his tenants,'Would
be better plessed, on Sunday, to doze through
an able Gospel, sermon on Divine mysteries,
than to be kept awake by a practical ser
mon that, among other things, set forth, the
duties of a Christian landlord. A • brder,
who has gambled on a magnificent scale all
the week, does not go to church to have his •

is whattie wants—doctrine is to his taste:
A. mershant, whose last bale of smuggled
goods was safely stored on Saturday night ;
and his brother merchant, who, on that same
day, swore a false invoice through the cus
tom-house—they go to church to hear a ser
mon on faith, on angels, on the resurrection.
/N, they.have nothing invested , in those sub
jects, they expect the minister to' be bald
and orthodox. ' But if he wants respectable
merchants to pay ample pew rents, let him
not vulgarize the pulpit by introducing com
mercial questions. A rich Christian brother
owns largely in a distillery, and it clamor
ous against letting down the pulpit to the
vulgarity of temperance sermons. Another
man buys tax : titles, anirsifees about all the
week to see who can be slipped out of a neg
lected lot. On Sunday he naturally wishes
us to preach about eternity, or moral ability
and inability. , A mechanic that plies his
