coal is taken to Ike water by a railroad two

The Pictou coal is well adapted to the iron
manufacture. It contains au abundance of
itimeral charcoal. It demi not cake in burn.

church, or some other theme which never
brings Christian duties home to their door;
but when a Christian's duties are portrayed.
and the subject is brought to bear in that
pointed and unequivocal style which! makes
them feel that " thoti art the. min," they
consider. it quite undignified, impolite and
unbecoming in the pulpit for the preacher to
bring these homely truths - " betwixt the .
wind and their nobility." A New York pa
per, sympathizing with this class of Sunday
Christians, has'lately undertaken to tell cler
gymen that they must not descend to , such
homely topics as Religion in every day life,
io which Henry Ward Beecher replies;
We have ho doubt that a rigorous ;land.
lord,; having, sharked it all the week, screw
ing and gripping among his tenants,'Would
be better plessed, on Sunday, to doze through
an able Gospel, sermon on Divine mysteries,
than to be kept awake by a practical ser
mon that, among other things, set forth, the
duties of a Christian landlord. A • brder,
who has gambled on a magnificent scale all
the week, does not go to church to have his •
practical swinditug analyzed and measured
by the "New Testament!! spirit. 'Catechism
is whattie wants—doctrine is to his taste:

merchants to pay ample pew rents, let him
not vulgarize the pulpit by introducing com
mercial questions. A rich Christian brother
owns largely in a distillery, and it clamor
ous against letting down the pulpit to the
vulgarity of temperance sermons. Another
man buys tax : titles, anirsifees about all the
week to see who can be slipped out of a neg
lected lot. On Sunday he naturally wishes
us to preach about eternity, or moral ability
and inability. , A mechanic that plies his
craft, with the unscrupulous appliance of
every means that will win, he, too, wants
"doctrine" on the Sabbath, not, these see
'ital.questions. Men wish two departments
in life: the secular and the religious. Be

be built: They wish to do just chat they
please for six long days. Then. stepping the
other side of 'the wall,„they wish the minis
ter to assuage their fears, to comfort their
conscience, and tarnish them a clear ticket
