If we were to follow •the bent of our own inclination, and study our own tuterests merely, We would hive resigued loug ago: but thetruth is, those who elected us arc op posed to our resigeing=in fact many have called upon us not to do so, and we have 'been requested by Directors belonging,to the Democratic party not 'to resign. When our term was 'up, the people renotnioated us, and in spite of all.the combined influence of some would-be respec -ifrl e citizens of the Borough, -together' with the Liquor.selleri and The Roman Catholics, 'they re-elected us, and'haire kept us in now going„nti eight years. And if 'we were to resign, we would not be ;he least surprised (hey would re-elect us again—and why ? Because we have striven to do our :duty •while in the Board, without "fear, favor . or affection," in elevating the Schooli; and rendering them worthy of the patronage of 'all our citizens, whether rich orpoor. Bur, ia coniequence of the lies so industriously circulated about our specu lations in Books, and tht large :urns we were realizing, v;hich very few understand sufft cieutly to contradict, they ,have succeeded in preventing may pareo ts,:yho formerly dealt with us, from buying tteir Books at our store--and our business really suffered from that cause—while we were using all our in fluence to extend the advantages of educa tidn to all classes.
