Tri'c cry raised bra pensioned editor, in this Borough, who can only echo the senti ments of his master, that it leads to discord, and perhaps bloodshed, will not deter us from discussing arty question of intcreit to the public, a privilege which is guaranteed to everyfrec American citizen—and also for defending our Public Schools from unjust at tacks, come from whatluarter they may.— The Public Schools have been attacked - by the Bishops, Priests and papers of the Ro• man Catholic Church in the most gross man ner, by styling them as •Sectarian," " God less." "Infidel in character," -‘ nurseries ot_ crime," Sc., and we are only acting on the defensive - in defending them. The craren who would. not defend them under such ci'rcumstance's, -is hardly worthy the name of a freemait—There are sevaraljeasons which haveLir i ublicecLus tto 'publish the ,letters - in an extra editiou*sine is, that all, both Protes tants and ''Citholics. Democrats, Natives and Free Soilers, may have an op •portunity of reading them, and ju r dgmg of the Character of thellontroversy ;.another is to give Catholic -parents the opportunity of hearing both sides, ind thus causing. them to thinlion - this qffestion : it is time for them to think. There are many among them whom we highly esteem as citizens ; and we know that there are some already beginning to ask themselves the question, lib) , they cannot en joy the advantages of the Public Schools as well as the other denominations of christians? Why their children should beseparafed only in the Schools, and thrown together in the streets and the workihaps? Whether tills separauon will not only engender discord and animosity, where harmony and good feeling ought to exist? And whether they ought not to'act in dependently of the Bishops and Priests in the education of their children at least, and send • them where they please? They ought-also to remember that theiboys whtinOw fill oar Priblic. Schools will, in a few years, elect the law-makers of the country, as the older vo ters pass off the stage ; and every boy who drinks from these American streams and foun tains of Istria:icy, will be found deadly hos tile to those who are strayed against, thins, trying to sectarianise and destroy them.— Catholic fellow citizens, you are more deeply interested in this question than even the Pro testants—you are the minority—you are in the power of the Protestants, and must este remosn so as long as you remain in this coun- - try—,-the Lilly of the Valley, and all other Catholic prints to the contrary, nothwith • standing. ' - Another ritiPoifatit reason 'why we circa - - late these letters is.• that we know that the crusade Made againsl the Public Schools is lased on aid and suilport which, they are to derive from corrupt pobitians, who have re ceived, and are again promised the C a tholic vote to elevate them to power, it they will aid Catholics in their schemes. We admit that - there is more to fear from this than from any other cause,,and, therefore, it is all important thai the honest portion of the people of all parties shantd be enlightened= this subject; then woe unto that Protestant Politician cad -.Demagogue who would heater away and tote oganst the present Piddle School System en any rout GrAru?atire Halls, at the bidding of any Retigioui del:mina/on. - - tidOD rot PAIMER.. Two or three lines of Steam Tug Boat, are greatly needed to carry Coal from Richmond by WS, which would soon build up a large hack trade for' the Central flail Road and Pennsylvania improvements. Now, we ask, in all candor, whether any corporation ought to he tolerated by any State that makes such dscrimina tions in its business—an individual may do it. but a corporation, deriving chartered right , front the people, have no authority to make such discrimina tions.
