WORTHY EXAMPLE It is well known that some years ago, lieckscherrille or Paine's Patch, as it was better known, was a most dissipated and dis orderly place, so much so that it was found necessary to institute some sort of reform, in self-defence, on the part of the more peacea ble citizens, if for no better reason. Liquor was, accordingly, banished Irom the premis es, and, this working admirably, the propri etors have earnestly set themselves to work id follow it up with other measures for the general iinproveruent of their men, until it is now, perhaps, the model colliery of the Region. Horded:Mien cur Colonies, and thickly wooded, and in part acantily settled, it has. retained a semi.barbarous character, in Some respect. to this day. •Ai some seasons," the streets of the towns swarm with a wild addition to the or dinary population—with lumberers frffin the woods. Irish emigrants, and -Indian wanderers -Till list year, these visitations were a, subject of:dread to , the sober inhabitants. -By dim the4tneets 'were hardly safe among so many reeling drunkardai and at night, alie reeling_drimkards murdered deep. Last May. when the towns tilled with theta siren- - gets, all was safe and onierly: The Houses of Cot- , rection were nearly empty thrmighout 185:2. There • were very taw paupers; anstsuch was the state of social peace, that the lawyers had little Ode in criminal eases. Such was the unnzediale results ' of the Maine Liquor Law. What was that la* . itself the result of ? This is the question that in terests es; for. there can be few or none whowould dispute the consequences of an abolition of intem perance. The doubts about the possibility ofsuch - `abolition at all; or otherwise than by . the sacrifice ofoomething more important titan the benefit to be gained. . . The Ma.ne Liquor Law was obtained by the ' simple determination of the majority to abolish in temperance in the form of drink. They did it thro' • the ballot-box—by electing temperance ammo the ' Legislature. For many years, valuable experience had been scenting. The ordinary temperance moves ments had been tried there; as elsewhere lin the Union; and with the mate partial success. The ' success can never be more than partialwbece temp tation and conflict remain. As long as rum and gut shops stand open. and the smell.'sal spirits is in the • air, the weak and wavering will stiffer under con- the ! with -temptation, and alien fell; physicians will tell in private of the increase of solitary drinking worst of all; and the "pledge" will be - in a lower state than ever, having added perjury to their. first weaknes.. It appears, from experience, that - it is a terrible mistake to expect so serious and dif ficult a proses. as self-control from such a stimulus as association in a temperance aociety: and thus it turned out in Maine, as elsewhere. So the Legit- . - haute was looked to; not to limit and regulate the. , sale of intoxicating liquors; not to institute a Wein- f gent licensing system; but to prohibit „utterly the , sale of intoxicating liquors for drink withinthe • bounds of the _State. Such a law was weed to ' 18411 by large majorities in both Hoars. But it failed. 'The great majority of the citizens who had •;•- procured' , the law remained in favor of it; and among the rest the weak drunkards who desired to. be aided in saving themselves, and in Securing their children from the Vice. ' It is observed in our larg e towns—in Lirerpool among otheri—that theatres*. eat eagerness` to petition Parliament for a public- - house reform is shown by the laborieg class ; the intensest ot 'all by the drunkards among them: and u'rery touching spectacle it is to see them thronging to sign a petition lido that just got tip at Liverpool. , Of the 10,000 signers, neatly an are working men; and, if thee had the franchise and the , bollot like the men of they would like the men of Maine, doubtless do something MOTO than petition. The' Maine Law of:114-16 was a failure. The rim sellers went on selling—sevretly if they could, and ' openly either than not at all—paying the Widnes; - and going on again. While the rum was there, it . was •sold; and individuals who hestinedthemselves to get the law enforced 5111111 M) from •the malice of the ruin intere st . Some citizens' dwelliugs were marked Some were even burned: and magistrates and witnesses were assaulted. Still, there waa. • good enmigh obtained to induce the citizens to go forward and not slide backwards. It *Ussery hard work for all the strength of the spirituous. party we; put forth in a last desperate effort in the elec tions et:1849. Alley a long and arditotis struggle the sober party triumphed; and the result was the eetebrated Maine Liquor Law whieh passed on the :Id of lime, lull, by a majority 01'86 to tO to the one hou's: and IS to 10 in the other. 'Some may a-k here, as many asked there—What mom could be done by law than prohibiting the sale? The one thimenioreiluif was wanted was the destruction of the liquor . and this ',tithe most i - strikisig fauna of the new law. The •iiitoxicating liquor. wherever found under circumstanc e s which, indicators/oe, is impounded till the matter is tried; and on the-con viction of the sellers, the liquor is poured out upon tits ground. Every city and tobra is requited or permitted to appoint annually; through its munici pal otitcers, nnagent, who - is licensed fettles year tinder responsibility trithe magistracy, to sell spir its for the purpose of the mechanic arts and meth eine; and, up to this time, it appears that a suffici ent supply is obtained for all such purposes by this provision. And in every other way,_the law ap pears to wink as well *as a prohibitory law ever (foes and certainly to the benefit of society :• that Susie, ~A dram shop may be opened here and there,. just utside the boundary line of the State:. and a citizen here and there may import a eat of spirits and give away the contents among those who will do him some favor in .return: but these are small matters. There is a general purification —the smell is not in the air—the dram shops ero not open before the.eyes—the temptation does not beset the wilt—the struggle does not perplex' and - weary the-brain and conscience. The social results arc PO clear that, the example has been hallowed.— Rhode Island has tollowed in the work in Maine, . and se. also has Massachusetts, with the exception of Boston, where the municipal- authorities. strong invested interests, atilt bold inn. The doubt was , at first, Whether a law so stringent could stand— whether the second year. .would not undo the work of the first It appears not. Experienced Ameri can citizens believe that it would now be impossi ble to get the law repealed. The first sentiment of Englishmen on hearing this story seems to be amazement that citizens will submit to such a law. They feel that there would be danger to our liberties if math a law could pass our Parliament and Throne to-morrow. No doubt: but•this is because we do not, as a people, desire it. If the Americans were not' sell-gerearned, they would rebel sooner - than admit of legislation so , stringent. But they are sellinverned, andAberein lies the chief interest of this wale - matter. They decreed for themselves first,.-the universal educa tion which disgusted them with drunkennesi, and warned them to save the next generation from it ; and they next deemed the exclusion of what they consider a physical, moral, and social poison. It has been the net as at a spirited manWhe: while disposed to resent dictation as. to his personal imposes's law on _himself, and submits thps to 11 discipline which he would spurn if it nune.upon him in any other wily; Our fellow-entzens cannot but witteh.,With deep interest the development of this very strong transatlantic. experiment.•".
