EN-PRESIDENT FILLMQRE,
The-office of Chief Magistrate o: the 'Uni
ted States is undoubtedly the highest point
of human greatness in the world, at the
same time it is attended with a proportion
ate degree of responsibility, and none is more
open or liable to public censure, however,
nearly immaculate the officer may be. Few
occupants of the White House , have retired
with so much general good feeling from all
parts of the Union. as President FIT.I.3IOIZE.
His official career, though a season of severe
trial such as our country has seldOrn, if ever,
encountered, has been characteritled by a de
termined spirit of patriotic devotion and a
promptness of action, that have won the
admiration of all parties and called down
blessings from the whole people upon his
head.
Socially considered, President FILLMORE
has been the idol of all classes in Washing
ton, his remarkable urbanity and true gen
tlemanly deportment on-all-occasions justly
rendering him a generglavorite. The In.
telligencer thus notices concluding put,.
lic Reception at the President's 'mansion on
Friday evening, 05th ult.:
" It was, so numerously attended that the
visitors must have amounted to several thou
sands. Never, we presume, has a Congress
of sovereigns honored a Chief Magi.trate'and
his family with a more hearty acknowledg
ment of true esteem than did the cbmpauy of
Friday evening Mr FILL.MORE and his house
hold. Ladies of all ranks and gentlemen of
all parties were there, patiently awaiting
their-turn amidst the dense throng to signi
fy their good feeling for the President and
receive from him uvreturn the genial and
polished response of friendly regard and good
wishes." •

leaving Buffalo, for New York, while pur
chasing their tickets at the office, are banded
a bill of fare, from which they select such ar

and numbered tickets are handed to the differ

each finds upon the table whose numbers
correspond with the car, the breakfast he or

STATE TEMPERANCE CONVENTION.
The proceedings of this Convention, as
sembled at Harrisburg last week, are lengthy
and highly interesting. We annei the Reso:
lotions :
Rev. Dr:. J. T. Pnrsg..r.r; Chninitan of the
Committee to prepare business for theaciion
of the Convention, reported the following
preamble and resolutions: •
• WIIIIREAq, This Convention is composed.
of citizens from the various sections of the
State or Pennsylvania, and may be supposed
to understand and represent the views of
the friends of prohinition, it seems to be fit
ting that tv e' should set forth these views
that they may' he understood by Memembersof
our Legislature and our citizens generally :
Therefore, Resolved, That the experience.
of the pasty ear in this, and our observation
in other States, has greatly confirmed our
confidenCe in PROHIBITION as the only.
adequate remedy for the evils of Intemper•
sore.
Resoli!ed, That prohibitory' laws. for the
suppression of evil, are founded on divine
authoritt-, and have received the sanction of
divine
,example. God, the Supreme Law
givers never licences an evil, but invariably,
prohibits' it. The .Divine law which pro.
hibits certain crimes, must of necessity also
prohibit that traffic which directly induces
the corninission of those crimes: .
SILO

Res°iced. That the traffic in intoxicating
liquor as a beverage, does induce 10 Com
missiOrl of every act forbidden in the Deca•
logue, end is therefore in opposition to that
Divine Code.
EMIL EPTING
- •
Resorted, That no human legislation. Can
make that right which the law of God do , '
dares to be wrong. The " giving of drink
to our neighbor, the putting of the bottle co
him a4d making him drink," is denounced
by Divtne authority, and no Legislature has •
the right to license men so to do. - - •
Resolved, That it is the duty of the friends .
of prohibition to ask only for the ENTIRE -
A,BOLITION OF THE LIQUOR TRAFFIQ
as a bciverage, and leave to the, legislatnre
the resimnsibility of giving anyl thing less.
• Resorted, Thai the idea of the destruction '
of property and capital now invested in the
liquor traffic by the passage of a prohibitory • •
law irfalse, and no such ruin would follow. .
A temporary depreciation of some kinds of
pro2erly would no doubt be the result. These
changes, however, would nor be greater than
the var iations in business are constantly pro
-1
clueing,; and as useful citizens do not claim
legal pfrotcctian from these results, but adapt
themselves to all such changes without corn
rilaint,fneither should the liquor seller,whosn
bit - steels is destructive be protected from
them.
Resolved, That the advocates of - the liquor
trstlic lisve themselves declared, that "'but a
very s all part of the whiskey manufactured
in Pennsylvania. is used for drinking purpo
ses," therefore, the great objection to• profit
bition is removed, as such a law would not •
interfere with the manufacture for any other
object.
Imporial
Resolved, That should our present legisla
ture refine to pas prohibitory law, at will
then, more than, ever, become our duty to
use oaf POLITICAL' POWER in filch a
way al to secure a legislature favorable to
prohibition.
Resolved, That the establishment of a State
Temperance Organ located at Harrisburg, is
of great importance to spreading information
of the action of the friends of prohibition in
different parts of the State, and this Conven
tion do therefore earnestly recommend the
CI3TtTAL FOUNTAIN AND STATE TOPER. ,

friendsi of the cause.
Resolved, That the President of this eon•
vention, in connection with the business,
committee, is hereby empowered and autho•
rized tp appoint a State Central Committee
of thirteen, whose duty it shall be to

their body a county committee who shall be
