A CUNNING TRICK. The following !fry 'adroit trick was recent. ly played in nne of the public ions of Eng land. A gentleman, genteelly dressed, walk ed.in and• protected to be tired. Having ta ken refreshment, he said he would, take a cap for an hour. To sleep he went, in a Ve ry business-like style,. in a chair, and a long nap he appeared to enjoy. Before it expired, the usual • smokepipe company began to drop and among others, two strangers mad( their appearance.- One of the company re• marked that it was strapless= to have al man sleeping in a public room with valuable' property about him, such as the sleeper, who had a hoe looking gold guard chain display. ed on his waistcoat, and apparently connect. ed with a watch in one of his pockets. To this remark one of the strangers repli ed, 't Pooh! that's no gentleman. I'm sure: he's one uv them ere swell mob as is always a taking of people in. I dare say he hai no watch at all; bat I'll soon see." - Suiting the action to the word, the swan• ger gently drew forth out of the sleeping man's pocket a piece of wood, round and about the size of a watch. rthonght so," said he, " there's a pre• ty watch for you," holding it up that the company might see it; and thenreturned it to the owner's pocket. By and by the sleeper awoke, and .called briskly for a glass of brandy and water: He assumed quite a patronizing air to the far mers, which soon raised. a desire to put him down. Accordingly one of the seniors required to be informed of the time of day. "Why,." said the gentleman, "the fact is, I had a : drop.too Much last night', and for got to wind up mrwatch." "Just so!" ejaculated the senior, "you forgot to wind it up, did you ? You'd be nuzzled to do that, I should say, would'nt you, now r " Nell, sir, you seem to take more notice of such a trifle than there is any_ call for; but the truth is. I have not a watch key about me, and mine is rather a peculiar Watch." Here a burst of laughter ensued, and a number of jokes were passed about the pe. culler style of the watch. Al , last one of the company loudly. told him that be had no watch at all about him ; whereupon the amazed individual hastily clasped his band to his waistcoat pocket, having previously declared that, unless the watch had 'been stolen since he had been io the room, he had one. Satisfied, Apparently, by external ap plication to his pocket, be said. " all right—my watch is here. I tho't you bad been playing a trick upoti mc." " I'll bet you .15 you've no watch," bawl ed out one of his tormentors ; another offer ed to bet-him 410 ; and one of t r strangers said he had not £5, but there were two save reigas which he should like to double by betting in the same way. The awakened sleeper looked at them in astonishment, and asked if they were serious. They all stuck to it that be bad no watch : and then he took out hiri-purse and produced five and ten pound notes to the amnia of the bets offer ,ed against - him - The stakes were posted ; and tbe Minot:telly awakened sleeper coolly 'pulled' out t,hi pieci;of wood. at which horse laugh arose against him ; but the laughter - was soon , on the other side, when touching a spring-in the . bigot wood,• it flew open*. and , displayed a,verc handsome gold wataltaatigly encased within it. The gen-. - tletuan gave a plausible reason for preferiog so odd fookieg a ease -for his watch- with which his dupes tnighrfeel.satiafird or not. He had their mone.y the extent of 440 : and they had bought -a knowledge .of the time of day. Of course the very suzgestive strangers lost nothing by the btisiness—in fact they were theaccomplices of this clever sharper. , irEARNESG AND LADDR. The book seller was pleased With his answer. and at last told him that, if his master was willing to part with him, he would take hint. Young Magliabecht was highly delighted, and the more so, when his master, at floe bookseller's request, gave hint leave to go.-t-- He went, therefore, directly to his new arid much-desired business, and 'had not ; bean long in it before lie could find any book that was asked for, as readily as the book-seller himself. Some time after this he learned to read, and from this moment forth, whenever he could find a moment's leisure, he was found with a book iu his band. He seems never tb have applied himself to any particular study. An° inclination fur reading was bis ruling passion, and a prodi• gious memory his great talent, He read every book, almost indifferently, as they hap pened to 'come into his hands, and that with a surprising quickness, and yet retained not only the sense, but often all-the words, and the very manner of spelling. His extra - ordinary application and talents soon recommended him to Errnini, librarian to the Cardinal of Medicia, and Marrni f the A. F. H great Duke's IN - arise. He was by them in. truduced into the conversations of the learn- lIIM , ed, and made known at Cuurt aud he began to be looked upon everywhere as a prodigy, particularly for vast ana unbounded memory. It is said Mitt there was a trial made of the force of his memory, which, if true, is very amazing,. A gentleman of Florence. who bad written a piece which WAS to be printed. lent the manuscript to Magliabechi, and some time after it bad been returned, went to him with a melanchnly face, and pretended to hare met with a most unhappy accident, hy which, he said, he had lost tiie manuscript. The author seemed almost inconsolable for the loss of his work, and entreated ..Maglia bechi to try to recoliect as much ul,it sb he poisibly could, and write it down. Maglia• - bechi assured him he tvoulds and, on setting about it, wrote down the wb . ole manuscript, without Missing a word. By treasuring up everything he read in so strange a manner, or, at least, the subject and all the principal parts of the bunks he ran over, his head became, at last, as , one ot liliactfusiotances expressed himself, "a uni versal index, bulb in titles and matter." By this time Magliabecht was grown so farhous for the vast extent of his reading. and his amazing retention of what he read. that it began to grow common among the learned to consult him when they were wri ting on any subject. Thus, fur instance, it a priest was computiog a panegyric on a par ticular saint, Magliabechi would, on his ap prying to him, inform him that writers had sptkea favorably of the•saint, and in what - part of their works the commendations were to be found—in some cases to the number of above one hundred authors. He would tell him not only who. bad treated of his subject expressly, but also who had only touched upon it accidentally, in writing upon other subjects ; both of which he did with the greatest exactness, naming the author, the book, the words, - and _often the very number of the pages in which they were inserted.— He did this so often. so readily, and so ex .actly, that he came at last td be looked upon alinost as an oracle. .Latterly lie read the title-pages only: then dipped here and there into the preface, dedi cation, and advertisemenis,4 there were any, and then cast his eyes on each of the divi sions and different sections or chapters of the 61 )J book ; and ins he conceived the mattter al most as c mpletely as if he had read it at full leng . - • t Magliabechi had a local memory, too, of the places where every book stood; as in his master's shop at first, and in the Pitfi, and several other ltbraries, afterwards, and seems to have carried this even farther than to the collection of books with which he was per sonally acquainted. One day the great Duke sent for him, after he was his libfariao, to ask him whether he could procure for him a book that was particularly scarce, " No, sir," answered Magliabechi, " it is impossi ble; for there is but one in the world; that is in the Grand Seignor's library at Constanti nople, and is the seventh book, on the se venthshelf, on the right hand as you go in." Although Magliabechi lived so sedentary a life and studied so intensely, he arrived to a good old age. .He died in his eighty-first yell% on July 14. 1714. By his will he left a tin floe library, of his own collection, for the use of the public. with a fund to main tam it; and the surplus, if any, to be' given -to the poor. He was not an ecclesiastic, hut choose ne ver to marry; and was negligeot, even to slo venliness, in his dress. His appearance was such as must have heen far from engaging the affections of a lady: and his face, fn par ticular, judging from the representations of him in busts, medals, and portraits, would have rather prejudiced his suit than advanced it. He received his friends, and those who came to consult with him on any points of literature, in a civil and obliging manner ; though, in general, he had almost the air of a savage,' and even affected tt. In his minoers.of living he affected the character of Dlogenes; three hard tggiOnd a draught or, tf;to of water were Ins more usual repast. When any . one went to see him, he was found tolling in a sort of fixed vit'rden cradle. in the . middle of his study . , With a multitude of hooks—,some thrown in heaps, and others scattered about the floor--all roqnd him; and this his cradle. or bed; at tached to the nearest pile of books by a num ber of cobwebs. At the entrance of visitors, be'was accustomed Mean out to thorn loot to hurt his spiders. Thai lived and died•Magliabechi, in the midst of public applause, and with such an affluence, for all the latter part of his life, as very, few persons have ever procured by their knowledge or leariog.. ' His vast knowleditk of books induced Cas ino 11l to . dohim the honor of making him librariap ; and what a happiness it must have beta to Magliabechi, "who delighted in t nothing so much as reading, to have com mand of such a collection of books as that in the great Dukes palace. He was also very conversant with the books in the Lo lrefizo library. and had the keeping of those of ',Leopoldo, ind Francesco Maria, the two Cardinals of Tuscany. And yet even , all this did not satisfy his extensive appetite: for he had read almost till' books. that is the greater part -of those printed before his . time. sod all in' it . ; fo; it was. latterly - a general custom, not Only among authors, but of the printers, too, of those times, to make hinia present of • copy of whatever they- published. -` . It is worthy of remark, that the Duhe'of Tciscany, as Magliabechi assured Lord Raley, had become jealous of the attention , be-was redeiving. from foreignera,'as those literary "strangers usually went first to' pee Affeglia: becibi before :they called on the Grand Duke. tt,'"A Tart grows in le-pan. the roots of valid partaka of the quality of soap. and is clad for elensiug pusposaa.
