It will be read with attention by every one who values the prosperity of the country. and who desires to see her resources properly developed and her interests advanced: Ma. EDITort :—lt'is gratifying to see that the wornout twirls of Maryland are suscepti ble of as high improvement as the lands of , her sister States, and that she has enterpri ' sing sons in all her counties, who know how and have the will to develop her resources, so far as the improvement of her lands go. Would that those who hive ruled us as with a rod of iron, could show as satisfactory re sults as we are now about to remark upon. The crop of Mr. John Q. Hewlett of Habi -1 more county, of 42 bushels of wheat to the acre, is well worthy of notice. H's crop brought 95 cents per bushel : equal to $39.90 per acrt White wheat is now worth 7:5 cents per bushel in. the Bahl - more Market, which is equal to $31.311 per acre for such a crop. Had Mr. Hewlett been so fortunate as to have raised that crop of wheat and have Sold it in 1847—only five years after the pas sage of the tariff of 1842—it would have brought him $2.30 per bushel, or 896.60 per acre. - But unfortunately for Mr.. Hewlett, his crop came in five years after the destruc tion of the tariff of 1842. The difference in price between 1847 and the present year is I $1. T35 per bushel, or sixty-fire dollars per acre, or .eleven hundred and seedily dollars on a field of 18 acres. •t 00 - 121 $3 00 -- 5 00 0 00 3 00 12 00 The wheat grown in Maryland in 1847, as estimated by Hon. E: Burke, late Corrimiel sioner of Patents—[See Ex. Doc. The same ditTerenceffi price—sl.ss per bushel—would amount difference two hundred and thirty-two millions, jive • indred thousand dollars, ($2:12,500,000 0 , pretty round sum In for the farmers of the co ntry to bear. Red wheat, which is the kin most grown in this country, is not worth in Baltimore 72 cents i 'per bushel. The fanters of the Eastern _Shore, after paying/ sl‘ cents -freight and charges, will have 021 cents per bushel, clear. This is eight cents per bushel, or 10 per et. 'less than I ever linew wheat to sell for at the I Brandywine 1W Is. So much for the Tari ff of 1846: , That odio s Tariff was passed in confor -1 mitt' with the Resolutions known as the Bal timore Platform—Resolutions, the tendency I i of, which.has been to injure the Institutions and bu4ness of this country, debase the i moralsiof our people, and to almost show 1 that we are incapable of governing this once' 1 glori4us Republic. See the wealth we are I pouiing into the lap of Great Britain;—the 1 weekly report ending the 17th ofJuly, )851, shouted that over-two millions of specie was shipped to that country in one week, from the port of New York alone. In nine months , of the fiscal year, ending the 30th of June, 1843, we had imported over twenty-two mil lions of specie, or Over $500,000 per week, showing the difference in favor of the Whig I , Tariff to be over $2,500,000 per week. READERS, LOOK AT THIS PICTURE (r.7and ask yourselv,ei, if ever a more grace -1 less set of demagogues (not to say traitors to. their country's interests,) eier assembled I together. than 'those who composed that Con vention and established that platform.: and yet the politicians who composed it run un whipt of Justice, and some of them are ask -1 ing office and promotion from those whose interests and business they have prostrated. 4 Will not the farmers of Maryland profit by; the errors they have heretofore committed; and in the future vote poly for men who wi)l take care of their interests and their country's ; honor: - A 'FARMER. FLOrR The Sunbury American (Loco) still perse veres in its opposition .to Judge Campbell, and deals him a slap whenever an occasion occurs—in generally tells too. We clip the following from last week's edition : ! We always regret theoccasion that requires us to refer to this gentleman.. But. as some of his indiscreet friends will insist that all ! opposition is owing to the fact that Judge ! Campbell is a Roman Catholic, we- re com pelled to deny the charge. T his cry of "stop I thief" to avoid the true issue, cannot save him. The fact that Judge Campbell is a I Catholic, and was educated and reared by a Catholic priest, never had any influente upon j us, hut his friends will find that they will make nothing by -attempting to get up the cry of persecution, in order to cover up his real deficiencies. We do not know of a single Journal in the State, opposed to Judge Campbell - an any other grounds, than his ut ter incompetency and the manner by which he secured his nomination. We are not to be frightened from a sense of duty in appa -1 sing qn incompetent man, by telling us that he L 9 a Catholic, or that that religion should screen a man - , _more than if he were a Lu theran, Methodist or Presbyterian. • ■ FARMERS, READ 1 JUDGE' CAMPBELL [For the .Xisers' J t.l • TO.
