The London Mining Journal contains a come rnunicatton from Adolph Count de Werdinski, in which he describes a neiv motive power for the propulsion of carriages on rails and common roads, without engines, steam, air, magnetism or animal power. The exploeive qualities of this . ingredient are so great that very small quantities and small appara tus are required. For an engine of two horse power a thread not larger in size than ladies' sewing cotton is sufficient. A thread of this size, passed through either'end of a piston, and divided by corn. pression, and these parte .exploded by electricity, will furnish the power: Mr. Isaac Tickle, of Camden, New Jersey, has built one of this size. The working machinery occupies no more space than a man's hat. Its applicability to every thing that requires motive power is apparent at once, and its freedom from smoke, steam, and heavy machinery will • extend its application vastly beyond any other power, if ii should p ove at all practicable.—N. Y. Post. , THE CHOLERA SPECIFIC. The Chicago Journal publishes a letter from Dr. W. B. florrick, editor of Ate N. W. Medictil and Surgical Journal., setting forth the rernariabte success that has resulted from the use of sulphur. in case of Cholera. The credit of discovering this new remedy, as it is called, is claimed by Dr. J. B. Bird, a chemist. It is said td be eminently successful. Dr. Bird having read that influenza, was ascribed by German physictanS to the presence of ozone:in the atmosphere, acre led to the ton, elusion that cholera might depend upirn the same influence; and sought for en agent to counteract itsdeleterious influence. • • , fo !earthing for facto to s upport this conclu sion, it was foutrd that the cholera never bad pre %railed in the vicinity of sulphur springs, or in sit ultions Where this substance abounds; hence the conclusion, that-sulph4 might be, and probably tit* the antidote for cholera." • Phe editor nye experiments were made which proved the •preseniti of ozone in the atmosphere at time, and ilfit the amount is in proportion to fhe severity : of the disease from time to time. f'About a week since, Dr. Bird, determined to try the effects of sulphur upon tiinaself and others troubled ag nearlrell have..been more or less of late, with inseasyeensations, j slight pains, etc., in the digestqa orgsda. The result was entirely sat. frifactory, Yso much an that Dr. Bird came imme diately co :)ny office end:requested me us friend' to test its; efficacy in my .practice, but to say nothing to others with regard ,to the .ingredients need until facts should justify its public announce. meet es a'discovery, Tbo beneficial effects re sulting from its use in my practice was such as to Convince me at once of its utility in the cies. of .cases described above. During the last few days Drs. Bird, Blaney. and myself have continued to use this spparanfrly simple remedy, to the exclus ion of nearly ell'others in all' cases with cholera symptoms. The result has been wonderful. All premonitory symptoms, such as pain, a sense of fullness Unnatural movements, slight diarrhass, dec., have uniformly yielded at once to a single dose of three to four grains of sulphur. In cues-whore either cramps, diarrbtea or vom iting !lave been prelim!, and in fact where all these gy m po rn i two - existed in conjunction, the use of - sulphur,. ii,t_above named doses, every three or four hours, llas the effect to ameliorate the patient's condition at once; and when aced in s few hours to dissinte, entirely choleric symptoms. , - t - The c4)ai Trade , for 1849. .e quantity of Coal sent by Railroad this week, is 44,263 12— hy.Canal 36,905 l9—far the week,61,059 13.
