GEN. TAYLOR AND PROTECTION. Our readers ell recollect that during the late IPresidential contest', we pledged Geri. Taylor in favor of protection to American industry and en terpriser. This p ledge was based on his rr Signal I letter," to which, we felt confident, from , hie Idtnown 'honesty of purpose, fi-enne,s and decision of character, ho would adhere. We are now hap py to state that in a recent conversation wi'h Gen. Taylor, our pledge wad fully sustained by the General himself He is the firm and decided friend of Protection,—adrquate, but moderate and permanent, framed upon the principles of the IBill of 1812, • which discriminate .in firrar lOf American Labor. He is firmly of the opin•, iota that specific duties ought to be ablated, as far as practicable, in the framing of a revenue Bill. In the Bill of 18113, the cd valorem prin..' cipte is the prevailing feature, and it is so framed I that it discriminates against American 'labor.— ; These are the two prominent points of difference, in the Bill of 1812 and that of 1846, and on these two points the President argues with the friends of Protection. When we speiik of the Bill of '42. .we wish to he understood as speaking of theprin cipfe upon which it was based. and not the ex ' act duties levied in said bill. On many articles a considerable redution eon be made without de: stroyin g the protective feature, and oa some of the finer manufactures, when labor enters largely into their production, we know of some articles on which a small increase would probably be required. it isa mistaken notion on the part of many, that the sincere friends of Protection and the • Whig party advocate high and prohibitory duties. They do sire no tulle thing—but on the other hand would .prefer renio l ving the,Public L Ind Fund from the :National Treasury"' and 'throw the Government entirely upon duties for revenue to defray ex *nava If the duties were prohibitory, but little revenue could be obtained from that source, and • the principal object for which the great . Whig pat ty and the friends of Domestic Industry contend, would be defeated, and the government left with mit resources. A moderate protective policy, ad.. equate and permanent, with specific duties, as far as practicable, so adjusted as to be protective While they . are not prohibitory, thus securing to to the fiee-labarer of the United States, protection from the injuriotis and crushing effects of the low labor of -Eur ope, . and rescuing the invest. mutt of the Miner, Manufacturer, Planter and Producer fromicial ruin and inactivity, while at the same time the coffrrs of the Government ere abundantly supplied from duties imposed on foreign fabrics and products entering our periods what the Country wants—atad we feel confident; from the views expressed by Gen. Taylor, that there'ate the leading features which will characterise, his Ad. , :ministration on -this important topic. Cali Statistics.-4 is estimated, says a New York paper, that the entire rt.cripte of California told in.the United States amount to 269,000. The receipts iu London to April 14th, $300,000.. PRESIDENT TAYLOR .- HIS ACTS Gee. With regard to removals the Weal dent has acted judiciously, an& in a :manner that no fault can be found with him, upoii-that score. This portion of his duty is a very delicate one,' bringing as it does, into use, all the judgement arid prudence of which the President is possessed, into play. And with this part of his administration no fault can be found, and no /soft is found, with the exception of the Locolocoe, who catch ,at anything to destroy public faith. The people, however; who ere the proper judges, end to whom we must always look for impartial decision, upon such matters, are satisfied, and we feel convinced that at the 'expiration of his official term, if he adheres to the doctrine, set forth in his Inaugural , ' his acts will be found to have been such that the people may congratulate themselves upon hi s elrction. We have raid that the people - would stand by him, notwithstanding the efforts of the opposition to create dissensions. The following revolution, passed at a meeting of the citizens at York County, convened for the purpose of ap pointing delegate, to the Whig State Colleen lieu, will servo to convince our readers of the truth of the assertion. 411 00 131 •300 5 00 8 00 3 00 ~~ Resolved. The songs, "Death of Washington," ''Old Granite Mountain 'Stale, New England," "lb.ppiest time is now," were performed in their best style, and told with erect upon the distit , guiihed listeners. The following verse of the death of Wnshington, contaluing the . Soul of poetry, was listened to with breathless attention : "Oh ! Washington, thou chief of the mighty of earth. And guard thou the laud which by thee bad Its birth; Court thou leave thy daughter end ne'cr cease to love her! .v ziorious spirit, let thy spirit attend: Watch o'er the objects, Which the:, once used to love Look down thou upon us, our country' lie friend: Loch down from the place of MO Unarm above." A GREAT PUMP.—Mr. George Lauer, of the Orchard Brewery, in this Borough. has just pro cured a Pump which exceeds anything of the kind we have 'ever seen. Pump upon a simi lar plan arc used in Germany ; this one, howev er, has beau so much improved, by Mr. Hurd, of Reading, that it now far excels those in that country This pump forces water, while the en gine which propels it, is under only ordinary headway, at the rate of seven barrels per minute, and the quat 4 tity of water thrown up, would he far greater, Were there not so many elbows in the pipe,, through which the water is conveyed, which, to some extent, impedes the progress of the water. But, - as it is, throwing water nt the rate of seven barrels per minute, and sometimes more, through a pipe only three inches in diameter, and of a length of 150 feet, the pimp may be considmed one of an extraor flintily character; and it will appear-so to our readers when we inform them of the zig zag course the water must make 'ere it reaches its destination. The pump draws the water from the SchuylkilL• is position being inclined ; the water, after Ceing drawn from the Schuylkill, is forced through au elbow of five feet . in length, w lieu it - pas,:es through a horizontal pipe under grOund, 50 feet in length. and then it pusses thro' a perpendicular pipe, 30 'feet in length, after which there is another elbow, through which it passes. Altogether, there are five elbows, ren ' dered necessary by the position of the trough in to which the water is thrown, and could they be I avoided, we are informed . that thilrinrkty thrown up would reach eight or ten barrel6air minute. The primp, which is worth scatty, Can be seen at any time at , the Brewery' a, Mr. Lauer, who will take pleasure in showing ii to visitors. r FOR CALIFORSIA.—Sonie of the nlvehiu rims.young men of Schuylkill county, are still stailiug fur the Gold Region, The ship, Boson G.
