The Wealth of s. Coa erl P pen,* upon it;
Farmersand Media:li l" -1./
What_is wealth i Those things which are con- ,
venient and tiecrlssair to use, and whictriadminis-
ter to our wants and comforts. Money alone
cannot therefore, he considered as wealtb,,becauie
if`the articles 'or things nbove mentioned are not '
to be had;or not in. existense, a Man .yould be
poor indeed, though he'vvas leaded with gold and
silver. If IW. - wero hungst, and there was no.
bread to ho ()ought, his 1,01.1 would be of `little
service. -• • •
•
It is true, mankind, by Common 'consent;have
agreed. that gold and silver should be the Signs
and evidence of properly, or, in other wordi, the ,
measures of pr'operty ,t, and : ha • who has a cirtain
amount of it, has evidence of so-much welalth ;-
he can change it for rho very things which Flo, it:
fact, constitute wealth:; ; • t
Thus a man:. who.lias d hundred dollars in
pocket has a ticket, as - it 'were, to entitle him to
enter into the possession of 100 bushels of corn,
or 100 yards of clutl4or 100 acres of wild land,
:
'or a yoke of oxen, or a horse and wagon asthe
case may be. • But'if these tbisgs do not exist,..
and he needs them, his ticket is of no mins use
than if he t h . ad a ticket to go into the theatre, and
it should he Mimed down: before hs used, it.
i t -'The elements, therefore, of wealth consist in
material p•oductfOns brinight together, charged
and modified by tho hand of man, of the faro&
and mechanic.. Commerce, though necessary 00
honorable, iy nothing more..thati the moving or
changing of these productions from place to place.
If we are right in the position we' have taken,
that wealth consist innat4ral productions,changcd
and wrought upon by the labor of matt, it fulloies
that the country which pnsseses the most of the
elements or material to Work upon a good soil ;
abundance of water polver, forest; of timber;
quarries of different kind of stone ; mines, and
beds ofdiffi-rent kinds of material &d., must have
the me'st natural wealth. i
It then requires the hand of industry and skill,
to pat these materials, into shape, and to put them
together to form real, substantial wealth. This
is the duty of the farmer old mechanic. •
The more.industiious 'arufskilful this class is,
the more wealth will be accumulated in the coda
try. Do farmers and-mechanics consider these
things, rightly Are . they riot too apt to think •
themselves mere plodders and servants in the in
crease' of wealth And; indeed, is there not a
false standard of respectability, too much in use in
society, and are not lbe"productive 'classes apt to
measure themselves by it,?
This standard appears to be, idleness am!, a
fine coat; and.eonsequently, the.mure idle a man
can be, and liner the dreSs, the more of a -gentle
man. • Not so. Respectability should consist in
an improved mind, and skilful and industrious
hands.. Moral qualifications being equal, he
should hive the most honor, who, try• the combi
nation of the efihrts of his mind-and physical pow
ers, has contributed more largely to the increaaw
of those things which constitute wealth. -

DI:CAr iN PEACTI.TaXts.—A singular rid and
one worthy of being recorded, was mentioned to
us a few days since by !Mr. Alexander Duke, of
Albcrmarle. lie stared, that whilst on a visit to
a neighbor, his • attctition was called to a. large
peach orchard, every tree in which. had be'en'to
tally destroyed by 'the ravagei of worm, with the
exception of three, and ; these were probably the.
most thrifty and flourishing peach trees he ever
saw: r zTlie unty cause of their superiority known .
to his host, was in consequence of observing that'
those.parts of worm.eaten timber into which nails '
had been driven, were generally sound. When
his Aree4 were about a year old he had selected
three of them and driven a tenpennyViZugh
the ',body, as near the ground as possible ; whilst
the balance of his orchard had gradually failed
and finally yielded entirely to the ravages of the
worms; these trees, selected: at random., treated
precisely in the enme manner, with the exception
•of the nailing,'-had always been vigorous and
healthy, furniThing him at that periodlvith the'
greatest profusion of thc, - naost- luscious frCit. It
is supposed that the salt of iron'affarded by the
nail is offensive to the - aronn, whilst-it is harmless, .
or primps even beneficial-to thetree.

fish:traveller, writing!from the Ardennes, thus de
scribea a method of preserving the ham. which is
certainly 'different from any thing generally knoWn
in America : !
The ham is cured in brine of salt, saltpetre, and
aromatic . herbs, - viz a few bay leaves, wild
thyMe, a handful of kiniper berries,, and a little
garlic. It is steeped for about six weeks, and
then dried in the smoke of a chimney; over, a
wood fire. When waited for' dressing it is buried
in the ground fur about twenty-four hours and
then boiled, with the addition of the same aro
matic herbs in the.water. After boilinr:tho bone
Is taken out, and the ham is pressed. under a heavy
weight. Asa corallary to the dressing, it may. be
added, that it often happens that the himovhen
produced at the table; disappears at one sitting.
