The First Assembly.—On .ursday Evening,
the first assembly of the season took place , and
passed off with an eclat highl creditanle to the
exertions of the managers; al ough bat a short
notice was given to our ladies or the preparahor
of Loonies and furbelows, stilly shone out in
beauty, and in strength of nul4l: re.—Were it not
for the envious proceedings Of a ur politicianit, who
occupy so large a portion of our columns,we would
attempt a description. But ai it is, the dashing

defeat the passage of ti* new Constitutibe, and
prevent an investigation into the esands of the
Governor's election. They hoped by commotion
and riot to bring about a revolution,ilittle ,caring
what the consequences might be, as they bad bat
little staked themselves, and little to lobe. They
heeded not the desolation they might bring upon
our state, or the lamentations and h4orrore of civil
war. There is nothing to palliate their treason;

that a resolution• to that effect bad been
passed, and Mr. Barclay•said the coMmit.
tee was regularly appointed tinder it. So
the subject was for the present dropped,
on motion of Mr. Rogers.
All the petitions on the subject of con
tested elections were presented. By act of
assemillf they must be within five days.
• Mr.'Thanna asked that himself and Mr.
Wagner might be excused, from voting
until all doubts relative to the election wits
removed. There was no action on the
;object.
Petitions were presented for the re
charter of the Minem' Bank and .the Leb
anon Bank. State Treasurer's report on
the finances received. Bill read in place.
Resolution offered by Mr. Carpenter, call
ing upon the Secretary for all the papers
in his office relative to contested elections,
was adopted without opposition, after he
had modified it at the suggestion of Mr.
Pearson, so as to embrace only the Sen
ate, and this year.
Mr. Rogers offered a resolution to con
stitute the committee in the contested
• seats of the County, on Monday. A.
greed to. •
Mr. Fraley ( city) one of the Fame kind
in Bell's district, agreed to. Mr. F. also
offered one to give the privilege to the
, Senate Chamber to all the members coo
-1 testing seats, which bias agreed to.• Mr.
Carpenter one, to 'appoint the Standing
Committee. Agreed to. Adjourned.
The members and claimants pretending ,
to constitute the House of Representatives
under Mr. Hopkins, nominated•candidates
for U. S. Senator. When the extracts '
from their journal containing their parries, ,
was Bent to the Senate, it was not recog
nized as coming from the House, but pur
porting so to come. •
It contains the names of some twelve
candidates. Every man of the Loco Po
co party known 100 _miles from home,
must bare been there, except the name of
Samuel McKean. That independent
Statesman is now to be annihilated.
Where matters will end is as uncertain
as yesterday. •

Mr. Penrose anpointed Tuesday for

gainst the Constitution.

Mr.. Frailey presented a Bill to lacer:
porate the Pottsville Female Academy.
In order, the investigation of the county
election was called up, but on motion of
Mr. Rogers was postponed till to mot.-

Mr. Myers offered a resolution, that the
Senate cannot proceed in its duty as Leg
islators until the military force be sent a
way.
Mr. Fraley proposed that a committee
be appointed to report which of the two
bodies, claiming to be the house of-Rep
resentatives, has been organized accord
ing to the Constitution and Laws. Mr.
Bell wanted it postponed, and Mr. Myers
'opposed it. Messrs. Fmiley and Pearson

the house adjourned.

this day opened in presence of both houses
and -the Speaker deOlared that the New
Constitution was carried by a vote of 113,-
971 for, and 112,759 against, majority
