Thb Robbery on the Portage Railroad.— Yesterday moruing wo published au aocouat of the robbery of & large amount of iron from the Portage Railroad, but as we were dependent up on a number of informants for the statement furnished, it w&s necessarily not so full and oor reot as we desired. Stnoo that publication, we have conversed with offioor Hague, and others, concerned in investigating tbo affair, and are able to give tbe following additional account, oorrect in every particular. Tbe wife of John Nioholls keeps a small con fectionary in Birmingham, while John professes to trade crockery, ware upon the mountains for old iron. The uucle of Nioholls, who was in his employ, sued him for wages. At the trial be foro ’Sqairo Simmos, the uncle throw out hints that John had not oonfited his attention to the legitimate trade, but that he had been o&rrying away iron from the Portage Railroad. Col Hopkins, Canal Commissioner, was informed of tbe suspicions, and he immediately instructed Mr. Hogue to repair at once to the mountains and arrest all persons whom he might find in any way connected with the larceny. Col. Hop kins being unable to loavo home, on account of sickness, wrote to bis son James H. Hopkins, of this oity, to hove the matter thoroughly investi gated and to proseoute all who might be guilty as either principals or receivers. Haguo and the Weigbmaster at tbe Canal, in Allegheny, pro ceeded to tbe mountain end arrostod JohnNiob olls. Nioholls declared bis innooenoe, and show ed" the houses at Plaue No 2, where he said ho had purchased all his iron. He made oath to the fact, and warrants were issuoJ by a Justioe of that place for the arrest of all implicated.— Two of them wore held to bail before Hague left, aud the others, (about twenty in number) woro to have a hearing tbe next day. The per sons who have been in tbe habit of selling this iron, are nut agents of tbe State, as has been stated. They arc workmen who live at Plane No. 2, anJ seem to think they have b right to all tbe iron they oan tind lying loose along the track. It is impossible to estimate the extent of tbe laroeny, as it has probably been continued lor bume lime. While Hague was cn the mountains, Mr Hop kins and Mr. iSlewart. the Collector of tbe Ca nal, were busy hero, trying to Jisoovor others oonoerned. Theyfsct officer tdoott, of Allegheny, to work, ani on Friday Henry Nicholls brother of John) and John Lythe were arrested and committed for a further hearing. These men have also been trading on the mountains, and do not bear the moßt enviable roputation. It Las been discovered that a Jny or two before their arrest they had a large quantity of rad road iron. Tbe police are busy trying to dis cuver where they havo concealed and shipped it Last week they sold .*>l barrels of scrap iron to Anderson A Son. We are glad to know that the Canal Board are investigating the whole affair with vigor, and will adopt every measure to bring the oulpnta :o justice. The orirno is one of great rigor, and do considerations will deter them from punish ing all concerned. Rkveral days ago, a young lad named Koeh ier, picked up.on the pavement in front of Cum mins’ fruit t-lAtid at the Alheneum, a puree cen tring which pome traveller, hurrying to the cars, had probably dropped there. The hoy gave the money to Cubiduus, who advertised it iu tbe newspapers, but as no owner came for ward to identify it, the lad demanded possess ion again, wliioh Cummins refused to give tiupposing that Cummins intended keeping the money, the father of ycung Koehler yesterday instituted suit against him, before Alderman Donaldson, for thc>\kr ani> cgvebsion Mr Koehler afterwards offered to relinquish t!i<- suit, if Cummins would deposit the money iu the AlJerman's hands, until it was satisfactorih ascertained no owner woulJ'comc; to this Cum mins refused to aooede, and the case will proba bly go up to-Oourt. Burglary.— Oa SuDiiay morning, about two o’clock, the dwelling of Mr. Mamtiold Brown, on the South Common, Allegheny, was entered by a oouple of burglars The family of Mr. B. ore away from home at present, ami the rogues ran sacked the house without detection. As they came out, o neighbor observed them crossing ihoyard with a large bundle, and instantly divi uing the motive of their visit, firod at then; •wifh a revolver. The shot did not take effect, but the noise aroused Mr. William Wilson, who resides on Water streot, directly in the roar of Mr Brown’s house, and as the rascils made their appearance over the fence, ho also fired at them twice with a pistol. Both shots, however, wore ineffectual, and the men got off with their booty, threatening io come back at some future time to take vengeance for the interruption.
