The aotioa of the Convention on the resolu
tions having established the reputation of the
oemmlttee who originated them, the same gen
tlemen were authorized to report to the ass: m
blage the name of a suitable oandidate for Canal
Commissioner.
SEPTEMBER 6
The oommittee retired, and Ur. L. D. Camp
bell, of Ohio, proceeded to entertain the an lienoe
with an account of what he would do in tie next
Congress, and finally closed by endeavoring to
prove thftt the Amerloan or Know Nothing party
was the moßt liberal and enlightened polltloal
organization extant
The oommittee on the nomination of a Canal
Commissioner here retnrned, anl reported, os
the result of their deliberations, that they had
seleoted Mr. Peter Martin, of Lancaster ooanty.
Before taking a vote on this, the Convention ad
journed until half-past seven in the evening.
At the hoar named, the Convention was oalled
to order by the Chairman, and the nomination
of a Canal Commissioner deolared the first thing
:n order. Rev. Samuel Aaron, of Chester ooan
ty, suggested Mr. Passmore Williamson as a
oandidate, in plaoe of Mr. Martin. The Conven
tion oooordingly rejeoted the nominee seleoted
by the oommittee, and nominated Mr. William
son, by aoolamation, as the Repnblloan oandidate
for Canal Commissioner.
This business being disposed of, Mr. Joshua
R. Qiddings made his appearanoe upon the
stand, and favored the audienoe with an address.
He spoke until a late hour, after whloh the Con
vention adjourned.

day upoa the levee some splendid imported
horned cattle and sheep, which were about being
ahipped on board the Prairlo Rose, for Coving
ton, Kentucky, and are owned by a Mr. Alexan
der, a Seotoh gentleman, who baa brought them
over aa a speculation—no doubt indueed by the
almost fabulous prices short horna and other
breoda of Eogliah oattle have of lato bronght In
our western and southwestern States. They
numbered thirty-four head of oowa and heifers,
six young bulla and ten head of sheep. The
horned cattle wero of the beat specimens of En
glish abort horned Durbama, Alderneye, Devons,
and Sootoh Ayreeblre; the sheep were all
Southdowna. They are too add to the already
fine stock now found in many parte of Kentucky.
