through the : routine whioh is thought by some
aeoewary to .prevent this great country from
being afflicted with tho evils of slavery. For
some time the meetings of the Free Soilers
have been slimly attended ; indeed that one held
yesterday oonld only be called a “ Convention ”
by oonrtesy. Wo snbjoin the report of the

“James Robb was called to .tho chair, and
Messrs. R. C. Flecson and E. H. Irish appoint
ed Secretaries.
Tho chairman stated that tho meeting was
held by those favorable to tho Free Soil Plat
form adopted in this city in 1852. On motion
the platform of 1852 was read

E. Btovonson was called on to address the meet
ing. He oomplied with tbo call, bat did not
*now the object of the mooting. Ho was, how
ever, In favor of the Free Soil movement at all
times and in all plaoes. His speech was able
and radical anti-slavery.
Remarks wore made by Messrs. Floeaon, and
Kev. Beacon, of the Uulversaliat ohureb.
A Water Spoot. —A water spout burst on
the 26th inat., in Clarion county, near the hoad
of Beaver creek, a stream that empties into tho
WaHon river. The only notioe the Inhabitants
had of tho approaching calamity was a noise
like the roar of mighty waters, when almost in
stantly tho oreek rose fivo feet above high water
B * ee P‘ n K away bridges, fences, oorn, po
tatoes, &0., and doing a vast amount of other
Injury. Mr. M. Tnrney’a saw mill and dam
Were so entirely destroyed that not a vestige re
mained ; the dam of Mr. Gardner was also de
stroyed ; that of Mr. Clyors was groatly dam
f£ ed ’j an ~ of Mr. Cope wsb slightly
injured. Toe destruction at Eagle Furnace
was very considerable. Tho dam, saw mill,
bridge and blaoksmith shop was swept aw&v,
and the furnace stopped at present in consc
qnenoo. But one bridge escaped destruction on
the whole crock.
Important to mohb than a Few. A Phila
delphia paper announces that a man of the name
of Bmith (John) who was born in 1697, and
died at the good old age of 109, in 1800 left
a fortune of $2,600,000, for which heirs’ are
now wanted. Another journal of the same city
announces that there is to be a meeting of all
the Smiths in Philadelphia, some time this
month, to determine who is entitled to tbo log.

The most important event In Parliament during the week
has been the rejection of a motion made by Mr. Roebuck
for a censure of the government, which sustains the Pal*
merstou ministry. The motion was defeated by a majority
of 100.
The latest report from London mentions a rumor that
Lord John Russell was to be succeeded by Sir William
Molesworth aa Colonial Secretary.
Lives pool, July 20.—The sales of Ootton for the past
week amount to 40,000 bales, including 7.000 on specula
tion and 2,f>00 for export, On Friday the calea were 7,000
bales. The market had been deprested by advices from the
United States, but bad recovered, and closed steady at for
mer quotations.
The weather bad been favorable for the crops.
Breadstuff*—The market for Bread*tuffs was generally
unchanged, except for Corn, which had declined about a£
